my first one is due in august i think it will be much more comftable to be in a huge bath for twelve or more hours than in a sweaty labour room

Personally, I think that's probably a load of rubbish. How is it any different from your waters going in the pool?? They have to go sometime!

pupuce · 29/03/2006 19:17

It's nonesense!
Will teach you to get your info form other websites Wink

Gingeme · 29/03/2006 19:21

No jayjaybaby thats rubbish. My waters broke while I was walking round and round and round the ward. Usualy they like to wait till your atleast 5 centimetres dialated though till they let you in the pool. Then it all went speedy and my torpedo baby was born abour 6 hours later .

purpleturtle · 29/03/2006 19:23

My waters have gone in the pool both times. The first time there was meconium present, so I did have to get out to deliver. Baby was already crowning though, so that wasn't too bad at all. Second time baby was delivered in the water, again a few minutes after waters broke.

Gingeme · 29/03/2006 19:49

purpleturtle did you deliver the placenta in the pool? I had to get out to deliver mine last time so I wondered if I had the option of delivering it in the water or is this standard practice everwhere?

Scrumpty · 29/03/2006 19:51

HIYA JAYJAY, I HAD A WATERBIRTH WITH MY 1ST AND IT WAS A GODSEND, SO RELAXING, BUT THEN WITH MY SECOND, IT JUST WASN'T POSSIBLE, I WAS GETTING IN A STATE, THINK IT MAY HAVE BEEN A LOT TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT I KNEW WHAT TO EXPECT!
DEFINITELY GIVE IT A TRY THOUGH, YOU'LL KNOW IF IT WORKS FOR YOU OR NOT, GO WITH THE FLOW (EXCUSE THE PUN)!

purpleturtle · 29/03/2006 22:19

Gingeme - I think I did deliver the placenta in the pool. I must have done, because I was very reluctant to get out having only been in it for about 10 mins when ds was born!

Gingeme · 29/03/2006 22:42

Great thanks purpleturtle Ill ask then if I can. Hated delivering it out of water. Had to sit on a half chair thing while trying to breast feed my ds to help it along which didnt help cause it delivered about 40 mins later on the bed!

Had a home waterbirth with my 2nd ds and it was brilliant - although I wasn't really in there long enough (just 8 minutes before he popped out!) to feel the true benefit. The mw poured water over my back during the contractions and it was heaven (oh and the gas and air helped, too :)) I had to get out to deliver the placenta - apparently so the mw could properly gauge bloodloss (which would be impossible in the water). Not sure I would have wanted to deliver it in the pool, anyway - it was full of floaty bits and some poo (tmi...sorry!! Blush

I had a waterbirth with ds, it was hard but then labour isn't called that for nothing!!! I was in labour for 14 ghours and in the pool for 6, it was fantastic as I could not have any other pain relief due to serious vomiting after any given........ would ecommend it to anyone (and my waters had broke hours earlier!!!!!!!

MummyToToby · 08/04/2006 12:22

i want a waterbirth, but i don't feel comfortable about being completely naked. do you think i could wear the same as what you would wear for a normal delivery as in a longish t shirt/nightie of some sort?

MummyToToby · 08/04/2006 12:29

and also if you deliver the placenta in the pool are you allowed the injection or does it have to be natural?

MummyToToby · 08/04/2006 13:17

never mind i have looked in my book and you can't have in the injection and stay in the pool.

jayjaybaby · 09/04/2006 22:32

maybe the water will speed it up mummy to toby also if you wear an old night dress in the water i think you might get cold???????

ive got an old tankini top im going to wear at the end of the day if your wearing and old night dress for a dry labour you'd end up with round your neck after any way to breast feed
my friend says no matter what she tried she always ended up naked any way

I found that wearing a support vest (like the ones from Mothercare with a built in support) were the best. Also, I didn't need the injection for the afterbirth - it came out naturally (and with a little pull from the mw) 10 mins after ds was born. Bear in mind that once you have delivered - you tend to feel the cold quicker as you don't have an extra body in yours keeping you warm! I had a warm bath straight after leaving the pool and felt more relaxed. Like many others who have posted, I only had the gas & air whilst in the pool and nothing when in the last stages - just pure adrenalin. Remember to pant when the baby's head is crowning - saves the need for stitches!! PS. The mw's drained and cleaned the pool - not a nice job but better at the hospital then dh having to do it at home and moan about it for the next year!!!!

this is the most positive pro birth unscary thread i've read for ages so must be a good thing

Frizbe · 26/04/2006 23:13

Had a waterbirth with dd2 and wish I had for dd1, although the water did slow the labour down so I took 9hrs with dd2 as opposed to 8hrs with dd1, I highly recommend water birthing! hardly and pain, only needed gas n air for the pushing bit, wonderfully chilled out experience Grin

controlfreaky2 · 26/04/2006 23:52

ds1 v long v painful and scary experience. 36 hours / epidural / ventouse...
ds2 birthing pool / no pain relief / brilliant eaxperience!
hadnt realised quite how traumatised i was by first until had such a positive time with my ds2.

jayjaybaby · 27/04/2006 09:16
