Thanks

i have, my 5th was back to back, i was induced (was with all 5 as i always go over 2wks overdue) anyway with my other labours breaking my waters is enough to start labour with no 5 i ended up on the drip, partly i think becasue of her positioning.

despite that it was fine, 3 hour labour and a couple of pushes with gas and air :) the midwife said had she not been back to back she would have shot out.

i would try and get baby to move tho, lots of time on all fours, knees lower than hips when sitting down etc, you can google optimal fetal positioning nad you will find lots of info :)

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 24/08/2012 20:30

yes, I had one of the hard back to back births, but its not a given
however I "deserved" my back to back birth - get moving/bouncing/all fouring/walking! don't assume the sofa positon and stay there like I did - I SOOOO regretted it!

thisisyesterday · 24/08/2012 20:31

yep, my second was.
it was the best out of all 3 of my labours. he was born at home, no pain relief, giant baby lol
really... it was fine. pushing was really hard work due to his position, although many back to back babies do turn during labour. ds2 didn't though so he took quite a while to get out but it was totally do-able!

Sirzy · 24/08/2012 20:32

DS was back to back, didn't turn during labour either. That combined with the fact I had been induced apparently made the pushing stage harder but the labour from start to finish was only 5 hours and I coped with G and A

Good luck!

5madthings · 24/08/2012 20:39

my dd didnt turn either, came out sunny side up as the midwife said! but my pushing stage was fine, however i have had 4 before, all big babies so perhaps that helped?

sirzy sounds similar to mine except mine was slightly shorter.

def try and get baby to turn tho if you can.

londonmackem · 24/08/2012 20:46

It hurt a lot and ended in an emergency section but not because of being back to back(I don't think).
Friend delivered with only gas and air but another needed epidural.

frogalou · 24/08/2012 20:55

I am 33 weeks now so I hope I have time to do something about it (she was back to back 3 weeks ago at my last mw appt). I am on the sofa all the time and seating all day long at work, I have done no exercise whatsoever for months! Eeeeek! Apparently swimming can help.

Is there a tip to get a birthing/exercise ball so I can sit on it rather than the sofa? The ones labelled 'birthing' on amazon seem to be twice the price of the ones called 'exercise'.... are they different? I will start a new thread to ask that specific question as it is a bit 'hors sujet'!

Bloody awful. Sorry!
Nobody actually told me though. Shift changes meant 5 midwives (I actually tried for home birth but 12 hrs later ended up going in) never told me back to back. I laboured on my feet shrieking about the pain in my bum for 18 hours.
Nice

Advice would be insist in them checking position during labour.
Get on all fours in labour.
If failure to progress then go with the epidural. I did manage a vaginal (ventouse) birth but frankly only because they were full to the rafters and no room in theatre.

5madthings · 24/08/2012 20:57

no just buy an exercise ball, get a cheap one from argos etc, they are the same thing!

TroubleAndFyfe · 24/08/2012 21:01

My first (and only) child was born back to back. I had a wonderful, quick gas and air water labour. The back to backness unfortunately meant that I had to get out of the water for the actual delivery and have my feet in stirrups as he was just not coming out. It was fine though. I'd do it all again tomorrow! Grin

EarnestDullard · 24/08/2012 22:35

DD (now 2.5yo) was. She was my first so I have nothing to compare it to, but I did find the back pain element of the contractions more painful than the 'crampy' element. And ended up with ventouse delivery after 2 hours of pushing. Managed with just gas & air though.

I'm 33w too now with DC2, fingers crossed she's in a more favourable position (or that I can get her to move if she's not). Fingers crossed for you too :)

P.S. I've heard the Spinning Babies website is supposed to be good for exercises to encourage babies to turn.

WhateverGurrl · 24/08/2012 22:41

Mine was more or less back to back at the last mw appointment I had before the birth and I would say the contractions were pretty intense towards the end, but not unmaneageble with controlled breathing and focus. I pushed dd out in 5 mins, and my labour was around 23 hours long, same as ds1. It was ok and I could do it again I think :)

TaytoCrisp · 25/08/2012 08:35

I think there is still a good chance that your baby will change position in the coming weeks. Unfortunately my little lady shifted to a back to back position at the last minute (after months of sleeping on my left side and doing everything for an optimal position!). The labour was manageable (nice pool :-)), but she had difficulty making her way out, partly because of her position, so I had an emcs. Bit of a pain after all my efforts in the pool! In any case, I still a gorgeous baby.. So, in short, there's still a good chance your little ones position will change, and if it doesn't the labour is still very manageable. Good luck!

nextphase · 25/08/2012 08:48

Yes, first baby back to back, and didn't turn on the way out.
Did it all on 2 paracetamol, til he got into distress, and they wanted him out, so had a ventouse, so a little bit of local anaesthetic. Went from 5cm to ready to push in 3 hrs.
Its not always the end of the world that people make it out to be.

shattereddreams · 25/08/2012 09:26

My 2nd wasnt back to back (breech but that's another story) and I went into spontaneous labour. This was a total piece of cake and I didn't even have gas & air. I got to 8 cm before they wheeled me into theatre.
Just wanted to clarify that my shrieking wasn't labour. It was back to back labour.

Blueaddie · 25/08/2012 09:50

My first was back to back, but I had no clue and what the implications of that would be. It was a LONG labour (as in days! haha) and I had to stand up for most of it or everything slowed down.

However, having no other experience of labour I didn't think it was that bad! Had an epidural due to extreme tiredness in the end and pushed baby out no problem.

Not knowing horror stories of back to back was the best thing ever for me as it made sure I didn't have a reason in my head that I couldn't do it.

That said I have been trying my best to make sure this one is in a better position if only for a shorter labour!!!!

FlirtyThirty · 25/08/2012 10:10

My first DS was a back-to-back baby...
Didn't know til I was examined on admission in labour.
That was good and bad.
The excellent part was I had no idea what the implications were.
The horrible part was that I couldn't do anything about then.

'twas a long, hard, horribly painful labour!

But I did it...and my DS is happy and healthy...so all's well....

Zoomania · 26/08/2012 21:18

I did everything I could in preg (my first) sitting forward, never slouching back, sleeping on left, using ball and all 4s position etc. Annoyingly baby flipped back to back at 36 weeks. I was terrified this would mean long painful labour. Labour recorded at 3 hr 40 although I wasn't examined til 5 cm so I would say more like 6hrs. Managed with the pool and gas and air. Was very intense, painful and very fast with no break between contractions so had no chance to ask for epidural etc or think about it. I was amazed at how my body took over and did it, all that worrying re long labour was for nothing! Would do it again tomorrow for my dd!

aliphil · 26/08/2012 21:44

My DD (10 days old) was back to back, and I was told to expect a really long labour with a lot of back pain. In fact I had no back pain at all - it was in my legs, which was the worst thing because I had no clue how to deal with it - and I went from 2 cm to fully dilated in under 2 hours. At that point I was pushing and the mw thought I couldn't be ready to, so insisted on an epidural. I ended up with forceps and an episiotomy, but I do wonder whether if she'd checked I was dilated before the epidural I'd have been able to push DD out unaided. However, even with the epidural, it was only just over 12 hours from my waters breaking until she was born, and she did turn at some point during labour. And frankly now I've got her, I don't care!

frogalou · 27/08/2012 13:24

10 days old!! Congratulations!

I have bought a birth ball, I try to lie on my left and sit on a chair more... we shall see! Everyone seem to have gone over the labour bit which is reassuring.

My 3rd was back to back. They knew he was before I went into labour. I really don't remember them indicating it was an issue? I was lucky and the birth was fine. No better or worse than my previous two anyway.

Good luck!

brettgirl2 · 27/08/2012 13:36

I would try swimming it is lovely in late pregnancy you just dont feel preg at all in the pool.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 27/08/2012 13:38

Just in case the baby doesn't turn in time, JuJu Sundin's "Birth Skills" book has an entire chapter devoted to back-to-back births and techniques for those (both of her own babies were btb) - I would recommend the book in general, it's one of the most practical and pragmatic birth books I've come across.

melliebobs · 27/08/2012 13:41

Mine was horrible. But I have no frame of reference. I was on a ctg and whilst I was on my feet or knelt it was manageable. But they kept losing the trace so I had to stay on the bed. Sitting or lying was so friggin painful I begged for an epidural. If I could have remained active I could have muddled through.

iamamummy · 27/08/2012 16:30

Hiya!

I have had 2 back to back labours.

My first was 10 hours, i was completely oblivious to the birth implications. Tried for homebirth but transferred at 6cm due to pain for an epidural. I managed to push him out but he decided to completely turn before his shoulders were born causing a nasty 2nd degree tear.

My third was back to back (he is now 2 days old!!) labour was 6 hours, last few contractions used gas and air. He turned just before he was born in 12 mins weighing 9lb5 and needing 1 stitch after.

Best advice i could give you is stay on your feet, lots of hip rocking and concentrate on deep breaths in and out.

Hopefully he will turn for you Smile
