How long after c-section were you standing and allowed a bath/shower?

That's it really...
Having second c-section in 2 weeks time and wondering about this...
First time around they kept me in bed for almost 24 hours, is this normal??
Also, when did you go home?

I had a bath the next proper day, 24 hrs in bed pretty much for me too both times, but both were 3am emergency sections after long latent labours. stayed in 3 full nights after the CS each time, didn't feel well enough to leave earlier even though I hated being in hospital.

But, hopefully much less knackered after an elective Grin compared to 3 day latent labours before them Don't want to put of any pregnant people!

Yep...that's the thing....I hated being at the hospital first time around...and I'm guessing this time it will be worst, because I'm leaving a 2 year old at home and surely will be missing him so much :(
I'm just trying to figure out a way to leave as soon as possible!!

I got told off for getting up when they literally put me in the PN ward bed (and just as nurse walked away). I wanted my cardigan out of my bag on the chair, so got up and shuffled over dragging the drip...it was about 1hr post op.

The midwife bellowed down the ward "GET BACK INTO BED!!!"

Have you ever tried shuffling quickly with a drip and one arm in a cardigan? Grin

24 hours after 1st section (EMCS) less than 12 after 2nd (ELCS). DD2 born at 8am had shower unassisted at 6pm, my recovery was amazingly quick, was ok in hospital for 2 nights, 3rd night was crap just wanted to get home to my little girl.

SandyBottoms · 01/07/2012 00:47

My 2nd CD I got up about 3-4 hours later...(they took out my catheter after 2 hours) to go to the toilet. Was sternly told to get back into bed. Was a bit Hmm as I had no other option. I recovered very quickly though. After my EMCS it was 24 hours at least.

SandyBottoms · 01/07/2012 00:48

CS not CD obv!

SandyBottoms · 01/07/2012 00:51

greyts I was the same. 2 nights was torture. There was a 'flu bug in the hospital and no visitors were allowed, not even dc's. Luckily I was on my feet and independent after 24 hours so they let me go home.

Ozziegirly · 01/07/2012 12:03

I was in bed until the next morning (CS had been at lunch time day before), then I had catheter out and had a shower with the nurse hovering in case I passed out (I didn't).

Back to walking around that day.

I was in hosp for 4 nights and want to go even earlier this time as I also have a 2yo at home who I will want to get back to.

fireice · 01/07/2012 12:06

The next morning, went home later that day.

Bonkerz · 01/07/2012 12:06

First ECS was about 16 hours. Second one was 12 hours. I recovered quicker from the second because I made sure I got up first thing and showered and then stayed up..... I rested in the chair with feet on a stool which was a lot easier when breast feeding.

jannaref · 01/07/2012 12:11

24 hours sounds about right. Good luck!

Meglet · 01/07/2012 12:15

24hrs both times. I was quite happy as I had the cathetar in and was making the most of not having to get up and pee. I refused to move until (then) DP arrived to help me down to the bathroom and keep an eye on me, the midwives sure as hell weren't going to bother Angry.

LadyWidmerpool · 01/07/2012 12:16

I had a section at 11pm and a shower at around midday the next day.

Jo178 · 01/07/2012 12:21

DD born at 10:31am, catheter out and up and around by 4ish. I went home the next day and made an amazingly quick recovery. Also started taking arnica as soon as I was back on the ward.

Chubfuddler · 01/07/2012 12:23

Elcs at 5pm. Shower at 9 am next morning and catheter out.

babyblabber · 01/07/2012 16:31

Section at 3pm and up for shower the next morning. For some reason I was vomitting all night though, even sips of water, so wasn't allowed up til I managed to keep breakfast down (after anti nausea drugs). I did get very lightheaded after shower though and had to sit on the loo in case I passed out. Stayed in 5 days, was tough as I missed DS.

SisterMaryStigmata · 01/07/2012 21:43

Baby delivered at 1pm, I was walking to the basin to brush my teeth and wash my face at 8pm (with catheter in). Catheter removed before 8am the next morning, then I was walking to the loo and to the end of the ward to refill water jug. Had a shower by myself at 11am once DH was allowed in to watch the baby. I went home after two nights, couldn't handle any more time away from my 4 year old and the other babies on the ward were driving me crazy! Although the minute I got home it was back to housework, cooking and the school run so I sort of missed the rest I had in hospital. This was my second ELCS though and I felt more confident about my recover this time - although I was out of bed and showering at 9 hours post op first time.

NellyBluth · 01/07/2012 22:13

Had baby at 1am. Was in the shower with the catheter out at 1pm. If I hadn't had to go to see DD in SCBU I would have asked for it out earlier. I was up and waddling at 10am.

Recover from a CS seems to be so much about trying to be active, so if you get up as soon as you feel you can I'm sure you will stand a good chance of being discharged quickly.

Good luck!

ELCS 1 - 16 hours. Went home on day 4.

ELCS 2 - 12 hours (military style). Went home on day 2.

PrincessOfChina · 01/07/2012 22:20

I had an EMCS at 5:30pm ish and was bundled into the shower at about 10:30am the next day. I was sky high though with hindsight.

phlebas · 01/07/2012 22:30

I've had 4 sections - all before lunch, I was up & shuffling around the same evening (brushing teeth, quick wash etc), catheter out & shower the following morning. I would have been fine (better) to have gone home after one night but had to hang around for test results. I was certainly far more comfortable & better cared for at home.

diyqueen · 02/07/2012 08:37

After a section at lunchtime, I was up and showering at about 7pm. This was because I kept pestering though, as I couldn't stand the thought of midwives having to pick dd up for me in the night, wanted to do it all myself. It was probably all a bit soon, getting up was fine but I really didn't feel like a shower (for some reason the shower was a condition of getting up...), remember standing there in a grubby shower trying to peel the dressing off as I'd been told to and feeling quite lightheaded and queasy. It was worth it though, I'd definitely do the same again if I had to have another section, as it was lovely having the freedom to cuddle dd when I felt like it after dp had gone home. I was kept in for 3 days but mostly due to feeding problems. Doing it again, I would be very tempted to discharge myself asap - was much happier at home.

NorthernChinchilla · 02/07/2012 20:27

ELCS at 4.45pm Monday, up and showered unassisted at about 7am on Tuesday. Home around 4pm on the Wednesday.

Would've preferred having the section earlier (was on the morning slot but kept getting bumped back!) so as to be a bit more mobile on the first night, as they seem to have designed the fish tanks and beds to be completely incompatible.

Thankfully one of the midwives colluded in me having DS sleep on my chest...

MammaTonic · 02/07/2012 22:17

I was kept in bed for 19 hours (ELCS at 11 am, awoken and roused at 6am following morning).

I'd stated that I was keen to be up and about, but the midwife got me out d bed after only a couple of hours sleep and no food. I fainted in the shower :( Luckily, said midwife was there to flop onto!

DH helped me to shower at about 3pm that afternoon.

If I was to do it again, first time out of bed and in the howler would be done after a fresh tipple of oramorph, a full tummy and a cuppa :)

Good luck for two weeks time xx

MammaTonic · 02/07/2012 22:19

Erm, not 'howler' but 'shower'!

Damned auto-correct!
