Did anyone else experience shivering?

When contractions really got going I started to shiver uncontrollably. Is this usual? The nurses kept asking me if I was cold and were acting like they've never seen the like before. It stopped as soon as I had the epidural but started again when the epi wore off.

Anyone else?

Gosh. Yes. My legs were thumping off the bed I was shaking so hard. Like you it stopped as epidural kicked in and came back when it wore off.

Cutelittlecatlover · 31/05/2012 09:26

I didn't experience shivering during labour but I did afterwards with dc2. It was so strange, the mw said it would probably last about 30 minutes which was about right iirc, she wasn't concerned at all and I guess had seen it lots before. I guess it was just hormone overload, I remember laughing and saying to dh I'm not cold and I feel fine over and over!

Cutelittlecatlover · 31/05/2012 09:27

I forgot to say I had a hb with just gas and air.

Kaloobear · 31/05/2012 09:41

It happened to me to. I thought I might be going into shock-I don't know though. The midwives kept telling me I wasn't contracting (because I wasn't dilating) but I most certainly was! I completely lost control of my legs and couldn't stand up they were shaking so much, but no one was around except my DH because the midwives didn't think I was in labour so we were in a waiting room.

Kaloobear · 31/05/2012 09:41

Too.

heliumballoon · 31/05/2012 09:45

Yes, especially with DD2 I was shaking a lot.

albertswearengen · 31/05/2012 09:46

This happened me when my fore waters went and then again a day later when my hind waters went. The mw thought maybe it was a rush of adrenaline. It lasted about 30 mins both times and I felt fine apart from the shaking.
My DH was falling about laughing as I was trying to drink a cup of tea- I should've filmed it for You've Been Framed.

ComradeJing · 31/05/2012 09:52

Is there anything to be done to stop it? I'm pg with DC2 and weirdly worried about this.

I had it after birth (also hb with a little G&A). I think it was medical shock. I was wrapped in a blanket and cuddled. That helped.

Wheezo · 31/05/2012 10:02

I had it about 20 - 30 minutes before DS popped out - my temperature dropped and I was shivering (had epidural so wasn't in pain) but I knew the contractions were speeding up - I didn't think of it as shock - I just thought all the nice warm blood was being sent to where it was needed most so the rest of my body (the end of my nose was a freaking icicle) was cold but the lovely midwife but a blanket over the top half of me. She didn't bat an eyelid so I think it must be something that happens to a fair few women. Don't think you can stop it - pack something nice and warm and fleecy for your top half that can be thrown over you/wrapped round you. I do remember my teeth chattering uncontrollably which was annoying. I would personally be packing a balaclava next time too just for my nose! That would give the midwife a nice fright when she popped in too!

eatyourveg · 31/05/2012 10:05

I had it too with ds1 and ds3 - they told me it was shock

WheresMyCow · 31/05/2012 10:08

I had it briefly when my contractions started to kick in properly and my waters broke.

ShowOfHands · 31/05/2012 10:16

I had it post cs. Was in shock and reacting badly to morphine and spinal. Had drugs to fix it, bp fell through the floor, passed out, more drugs, shook more, mild panic as the drugs wouldn't work, then they took my temp. Was 35 and falling. Several thermal blankets and a heater blowing under them and I soon warmed up. I felt v panicky though.

Sososohard · 31/05/2012 10:18

I had it post birth - was shock I think.

neolara · 31/05/2012 10:23

Yes, when my waters broke with a pop. No signs of labour up to that point and when waters went I immediately began shivering and shaking. 25 mins later baby was in my arms. I think I went straight into transition.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 31/05/2012 10:33

I had it after the births of ds2 & 3. I was fine in the pool, but as soon as I got out I was freezing cold, my teeth chattered and I shivered all over. I had lots of blankets put over me and I was fine within about 10 minutes or so.

On reflection it was also after the placenta came out. Maybe it was my body going into a bit of shock having lost all of that extra blood all of a sudden?

Sorry, that doesn't answer your question does it? But looking at other people's experiences on here it looks quite normal. I know a lot of people get cold feet in labour, so put on socks to help regulate their temperature.

thefurryone · 31/05/2012 10:40

I had it after DS was delivered, apparently it's normal at that stage was so bad they had to take DS off me as because I was on my back in stirrups being stitches I couldn't get into a safe position to not drop him. I think it probably was shock, as I had similar shaking once before after I'd been in a bus crash.

melika · 31/05/2012 10:40

Yep, both times, after the births, wore off after 30 mins. Nurses didn't seem bothered by it at all, didn't really make a fuss about it.

okiecokie · 31/05/2012 21:38

I had it to but just after delivering. Was shaking so badly that they could not get blood pressure reading so gave me a shot of pethadine to calm me down. It was in shock but the birth was pretty traumatic.

sparkle12mar08 · 31/05/2012 21:43

Yes in transition both times. Cold and shivery and feeling very insular. Apparently temperature drop is a dead giveaway for transition.

I had it for an hour or so post CS. I wasn't cold or anything but just couldn't stop shaking. Nurses were very unphased by it and said it was very normal. Assumed it was shock.

MelangeATrois · 31/05/2012 21:53

Me too. Two episodes of it with DD after epidural + Synto at 10cm dilated to increase contractions as baby wrong way up/stuck. Had violent shivering/freezing cold. They piled loads of blankets on which was nice. Then started feeling dizzy also so was put on oxygen.

Herrena · 31/05/2012 21:53

I had that!! It was three days post-labour though. I got home, fell into bed for a nap and started shivering uncontrollably as soon as I hit the pillow. Felt really really cold. It lasted for about 20 min or so and then wore off - I just assumed it was something hormonal.

It did scare me though as I'd had no idea that could happen. Come to think of it, I haven't heard of it happening to anyone else since.

Do you really think it's due to shock? Genuine question, I have no idea what shock feels like.
