If so did you have any conditions such as placenta previa, problems with placenta not working properly, pre-eclampsia, obstetric cholestasis etc.

Was it a vaginal birth or c section?

Ds1 had to spend a few days in SCBU. He was born at 41wks+2

No previous conditions in pregnancy, and a vaginal birth.

nappyaddict · 29/04/2012 10:31

Did he come of his own accord or were you induced?

my ds was in scbu for a couple of weeks. Up until labour I had a problem free pregnancy- I was induced at almost 42 weeks, then needed an emergency c section, I ended up in intensive care and he ended up in scbu as he had a brain haemorrhage and seizures.

nappyaddict · 29/04/2012 10:39

Timrous Do they know what caused the haemorrhage and seizures? Is he OK now?

Both mine were nearly 2 weeks over with problem free pregnancies but c-sections and both were in SCBU.

DC1 for nearly 3 weeks due to GBS. DC2 just a few days due to poor feeding, suspected GBS (it wasn't thankfully!) and a neonatal blood problem that I can't remember the name of.

Jinsei · 29/04/2012 10:58

DD was in SCBU until she was a week old. She was 17 days late - I was induced and then had to have a an emergency c-section.

The pregnancy was problem-free, but she tested positive with GBS. I should have been given antibiotics during labour but wasn't as midwives didn't believe that my waters had broken. Hmm

melliebobs · 01/05/2012 13:17

Dd1 was born 40+17

Went to be induced. Already in labour so they left me to it. After 8 hours they put me on that drip to speed it up. 3 hours after that ended up with EMSC under GA

Dd1 had to visit Neo natal 2 times a day for antibiotics. (in the end there was nowt wrong with her) typical

dinkystinkyandveryverybored · 01/05/2012 13:19

ds1 was 42 weeks - in SCBU for a day, on drip for 3 days - he ingested meconium and not great APGARs when born. Problem free pregnancy, induced and then negligent midwife caused the SCBU trip.

Ds2 was born at 40+9. We had one visit to SCBU for jaundice and then he was discharged, then he was readmitted (but to Peadeatric Care Unit as he was over 14 days old) for a bowel problem. Pregnancy was fine except I had hyperemesis and ds2 did not grow much in the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy (weigh 7lbs at birth even though he was late). I tested positive for Group F strep (no idea what that is), but they don't think it had any affect on his health (i.e. didn't cause the problems he had after birth).

I had a vaginal birth.

nickseasterchick · 01/05/2012 13:30

18 years ago I went to 44+++++ (5 days),I was induced as I had pre eclampsia symptoms -protein in my urine,v high bp and oedema.

I was induced with 4 pessaries
then my hind waters broke
then I was put on a synctocin drip
then they broke my waters
then they used foetal monitoring
then they performed an epesiostomy
then they tried forceps (cutting ds near his eye)
then they used ventuose (scarring ds head to this day)

Then ds stopped breathing and I was very distressed so

I had an emergency caesarian section.

Ds was born not breathingSad he got 0 on his first apgar and 2 on his second .......dh was told it wasnt looking good

Ds was v poorly he was in icu in the scbu on a ventilator,we were told he would have brain damage and cerebral palsy,he had a black towel over the top of his incubator and he was given 12 hours to live ....

But my 9lb 3oz baby was ok hes not brain damaged or suffering cp ......hes alive and well and reading law at Manchester university - Hes come a long way!!!

Statistics are numbers thats all.

  • at the time of his birth I was 19 he was my first baby and I was completely unprepared for all this id expected a normal birth etc etc and the reason I went so far over my dates was never resolved although the hospital admitted responsibility,we never sought compensation cos he was a healthy baby etc etc.

yakbutter Had heard of a few 39 weeker CS babies that had ended up in SCBU because of wet lung and breathing problems and was just curious about slightly older babies.

What caused your dd's brain damage? How old is she now and what problems does she have?

41 + 5 and induced, failed ventouse, EMCS. DD fine at birth, great APGARs but ended up in SCBU with suspected infection and severe jaundice due to absolutely no help with getting feeding established. Then had to endure an internal battle over SCBU who wanted to give me formula and the post-natal ward who 'confiscated' it from me when I got back to my bed.

DD then ended up back on SCBU for a second time due to dehydration caused by failure to establish feeding.

Oh and did I mention the zero help I got in getting breastfeeding established? Confused

Were you induced?

My friend's DS has brain damage and cerebral palsy but they don't know to what extent as he is only 17 weeks. His was caused by a bleed on the brain whilst being resucitated.

DS1 was born at 39 + 6 - so doesnt quite make your 40 + but very close!

He was in SCBU for 8 days, and we went from - 'probably wont make it and brain damaged ' to a perfectly healthy child (he's now 5)

He was undiagnosed breech, born in under 2 hours from first signs of labour and assisted birth (he leg was already out so I chose to continue vaginal delivery) He was resusitated (sp sorry ) ventilated initially, fitting, and organs failing. He made an astonishng recovery.

Ds born at 41 +4.
EMCS after 12 hrs labour, he was in NICU for a month, diagnosed with Hypoxic brain injury, meconium aspiration plus a host of other problems. We were told he wouldnt make it but he made a full recovery and is doing great.
My placenta had started to fail at some point which obviously caused some of the probs.Am currently 31 weeks pregwith DC 2 and being monitored very carefully.

Inneedofsanity · 01/05/2012 17:56

His MRI done at 14 days showed an area of damage affecting sensory development but we havent seen evidence of this in the last 2 years.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 01/05/2012 18:06

DS2 was born at 40 weeks. Vaginal birth but I was bleeding heavily from what they later diagnosed as a fenestrated placenta (I'd never heard of it before or known anyone else with it since. I think they may have made it up Grin)

He seemed fine when born but soon started struggling for breath and went blue. He was transferred to specialist unit at Glenfield hospital in Leicester and put on ECMO.
He is now nearly 11 and perfectly healthy. Thank goodness for Addenbrooks suggesting ECMO. He wasn't born there.

Karoleann · 01/05/2012 21:08

My dc1 was in scubu for a couple of days, I had a placental abruption after giving birth at 41+5, went into labour naturally. He's fine.
I was induced earlier with dc2 and dc3.

jonasmcflonas · 01/05/2012 21:17

DS was born by EMCS at 41+5. He was in SCBU for 3 days as seemed to have some kind of infection/stomach problem. However after 3 days of antibiotics, lumbar punctures and investigations he was suddenly fine!

Personally I don't feel you should have to wait to be 14 days overdue to be induced (as you do where I live). No real medical knowledge here but just seems too long and that there often can be complications (from talking to other people in similar position).

hackneyzoo · 01/05/2012 21:32

DC3 was born at 40+14, problem free labour, uneventful water birth, she was fine then started struggling for breath after a few minutes. Turns out she had a collapsed lung, either caused by swallowing amnimotic fluid or water from the pool as she came out, no one really knew or ellaborated more than that. She was in SCBU for 5 days and given a course of ABs. She was fine after about 12 hours

icarriedawatermelon2 · 01/05/2012 21:43

40+5 I had Strep B and they weren't able to get iv antiobiotics into me in time as birth was so fast, so DS had to have 5 days in SCBU.

DuelingFanjo · 01/05/2012 21:48

MY ds was in special care for about 10 days after his birth. He was 40 +11 and there was meconium in my waters, he had difficulty breathing just after he was born plus he had seizures the day he was born. He's 16 months and fine now. we have check ups every 6 months but he's reaching all his milestones.

I had no problems before the birth but did pick up an infection in the early stage of labour and was given anti-biotics.
