It's a myth, every birth is different. My third was much longer then my second but not quite as long as my first. Third baby was back to back tho, so was a little stubborn.
Good luck with the labour and I hope it goes how you want.

Thank you.

My third was born in January, previous labours all straightforward and reasonably quick. We left the house for hospital at 9.30pm, arrived at 9.50pm, ds3 born at 10.10pm. Hardly had to push at all.

5madthings · 17/04/2012 22:41

my third was quick, but it took ages to get going, was very stop and start, once it did it was under 3hrs :)

mummytime · 17/04/2012 23:00

My third, I missed the First stage. I woke to what I thought was the first contraction and was in transition. Only got to hospital because DH dialed 999, and the use of Gas and Air. I thought the whole way there " I want an epidural but it's too late". It was just under 1 hour from start to finish, my emergency child care arrived with the ambulance. But it was okay!

I have heard of someone who lived 2 hours from the hospital and got there for each of her labours.

TruthSweet · 18/04/2012 16:57

1st was a 4 day induction, 2nd was a 4min 2d stage home birth (though 25 hour labour), 3rd was 3 weeks of pro-dromal labour with 25 hours of labour and a 17 min 2nd stage. Hopefully 4th is like 2nd not 3rd!

Jess850 · 18/04/2012 17:03

I will let you know if it ever bloody happens (41 weeks today) :-)

happynappies · 18/04/2012 17:17

1st was 32 hours, 2nd was 28 hours and back to back, 3rd was 4 hours. 4th due in September, wonder how long that will be?

doradoo · 18/04/2012 17:23

1st - 15hrs, 2nd - 5hr HB, 3rd - 45mins HB mw's didn't make that one!

Times from 1st noticed contraction to delivery. 3rd one took a while to get going though - false labour a couple of times - you'd think I'd have known it wasn't the real thing!!

iwantbrie · 20/04/2012 12:48

Myth. My 3rd was actually the longest at just over 5 hours!

Siddhartha · 20/04/2012 12:51

nope!

ds1 - quick as you like (3hrs and nary a squeak from me)

ds2 - partial placental abruption, 3rd degree tear and 6 months recovering (and a vasectomy hahah)

ds3 - (new partner) - planned C-section. wonderful. So civilised!

shrinkingnora · 20/04/2012 13:00

From feeling first contractions to delivery (emergency section every time)

DD 24 hours
DS1 18 hours
DS2 5 days.....

OneHandFlapping · 20/04/2012 13:05

True IME. Third was both quicker and MUCH less painful than the previous two.

Jess850 · 22/04/2012 13:21

My DC3 born at 8.15am on 20th April summary, it was actually a really good labour, still on cloud nine - wish you the same good experience.
Regular mild contractions started 9pm every 4 minutes, got to hospital 4.30am , short, quite intense coming every 2 minutes.
Was crazy busy at hospital, full moon apparently brings labour on lol -monitored, examined 4cm moved to labour room about 5.30 - started gas and air. At 7.30 told DH and MIL they would have time to go and grab some breakfast - 20 mins later midwife said call them now you are 9cm and waters trickling.
Changed position kneeling up holding on to bed headrest, leaned forward as lots of pain and cramp in hips, 20 minute second stage and Darling Dexter slipped out! Only a few grazes this time and no stitches - whoop. All the best.

Jess850 · 22/04/2012 13:30

Should have answered your question, not a myth in my case as active labour, 4 cm onward =
1st = 7 + 1/2 hours
2nd = 5 + 1/2 hours
3rd = 3 + 3/4 hours

Southwest · 22/04/2012 13:35

Never heard that myth could you be muddled?

I've heard second are faster third births are different that was a in general and b from my very experienced midwives

threecurrantbuns · 22/04/2012 13:35

My third was my quickest at an hour from first contraction to baby in arms, too bloody quick in my opinion no chance to get my head around it so intense.

Due today with number4 with no sign of arriving. Hoping I will get some warning.

Northernlurker · 22/04/2012 13:40

My third was maybe an hour longer than my second. My first was probably the quickest in terms of what was actual labour - but as I was induced and the pessary caused a lot of pains it didn't feel like that!

bronze · 22/04/2012 13:41

My third was about eighteen weeks quicker than her brothers Grin

More seriously each of my actual births for quicker and easier

mosschops30 · 22/04/2012 13:43

Myth for me.

Third birth was horrendous 4 days of induction, followed by 12hours of labour only progressing to 5cm, then EMCS.

Dd and ds1 straightforward vaginal deliveries

Southwest · 22/04/2012 13:46

Oh look last 3 posters had different third births Grin

Southwest · 22/04/2012 13:47

Oh sorry bronze really didn't mean to grin about your birth
Really really sorry Blush

McKayz · 22/04/2012 13:49

I've heard that 3rd births are always the worst. Hoping it's wrong as my 3rd is due in just over 8 weeks

Southwest · 22/04/2012 13:51

Mc that's what I'd heard too so I asked mw who said no just different
Mine was as well

5madthings · 22/04/2012 14:30

my third was 3hrs once it got going but was very stop start to begin with, my midwife said this is common with 3rd births apparently.

but no 1 took 3 days!!

no2 took 7hrs

no 3 took 3 hours but lots of pre labour

no 4 took 1 hr

no 5 took 3 hrs BUT she was back to back and the midwife said she would have shot out had she not been back to back, as it was it was only a few pushes despite her coming out the wrong way round.
