GBS...how long in hospital post-birth?

So, I tested +ve for GBS. I know I need IV antibiotics during labour.

BUT...conflicting info on whether me and the baby will have to stay in for observations for 24 hrs after birth.

My MW suggested not, unless didn't have enough time in labour to get a decent dose of antibs. But a friend of our who is also a MW (at a different hospital), said we'd have to stay for 24-48 hrs for obs, regardless of antibs.

I think I am suspicious of my MW trying to sugar-coat [cynical emoticon]....

My DS is 4 weeks old and I tested +ve for GBS.

I had the antibiotics in labour but DS showed signs of infection and he needed iv antibiotics after birth - he had 48 hours of antibiotics then 24 hours of observations

Because of time of birth etc we spent 3 nights in and were allowed home first thing day 4.

oh lordy..maybe I should pack a 'longer stay' hospital bag to keep in the car boot after all....poo.

Hi there
Is it your first DC? Then I think obs are advised - I was +ve with DS1 who was born on a Friday and the paediatrician kept getting called to emergencies so didn't discharge us until about 36 hours after he was born.
It's q nice to be in, tbh.
Good luck with the impending arrival

This is dc2. No gbs spotted when I was pg with DS, and he was fine after birth.

Afraid to say I was in for 7 days as they didn't get the antibiotics in quick enough and they found strep in my bloodstream as well so my dd had to have iv antibiotics for a week.
My situation was unusual so don't worry it would happen but just wanted to make sure you are prepared for a longish stay just in case.

PotteringAlong · 01/01/2012 19:27

I think it'd be best to prepare for a longer stop. I'm not sure how long I would'vebeen in if he hadn't needed the iv antibiotics but best be prepared!

(oh, and DS suffered no ill effects from the antibiotics or the infection signs!)

After DS was born my swab showed positive for GBS. I was out about 48 hours after he was born but that was more due to not great birth experience and blood transfusion etc.

With DD they really didn't seem bothered - I got some antibiotics but not the full four hours as she was born sooner. Born at lunch time and I was told I could have gone home that day, but wanted to stay in overnight to get to know her on her own. Can't even remember anyone doing any obs on her at all tbh.

gave birth on the Monday at 9pm and was finally discharged on the Thurs at 2pm and I'd had 2 lots of Antibiotics during labour, pack for a few days to be on the safe side!

yes just to further reassure you my DD is a very robust and healthy toddler who hardly gets ill (touches wood). Apart from the discomfort caused by the iv line which was in for 7 days and the constant heel prick tests she had no ill effects at all from the antibiotics.
