This is quite mingin i know but im pregnant with 3rd baby and absolutely shameful about childbirth because of the poo thing. I actually trumped last time i gave birth it was the most embarrassing thing ive ever done. I know most people do but for those who dont poo when giving birth please tell me how so i can avoid the shame!!!

it is normal - embarassing but normal - I am still a bit mortified that DH saw.
But it is so much better for everything to come out then so you get a few poo free days after the birth. I had an episiotomy and was completely terrified of pooing afterwards! An enema would work I guess but I could do without the risk of having diarrhoea as well as throwing up everywhere throughout labour.

Bozza · 04/01/2006 15:02

Well I'm guessing I did with DS because I did so much pushing for so long the chances are high. But I know I didn't with DD because I was stood leaning on my bed and could see everything coming out. But cupcakes makes a good point. With DD the first poo after she was born was longer and more painful than actually giving birth to her (the second stage that is). And because of the piles I was sorer/had more trouble sitting down
afterwards.

Personally I see it as just one of those things but think the only way to be certain is an enema.

Luckily I had a natural "clear-out" before both my births. Its been the same both times, I've had real sudden urgent poos (sorry if TMI ) as one of my first signs of labour. DD and DS both born only a few hours later.
(I did manage to "fire out" lots of blood, amniotic fluid and god knows what else though all over the midwife, her shoes, keys etc when DS was born)

HappyNewFrannyandZooey · 04/01/2006 16:27

Yummymummy, yes it is me who still has the nearly 3 year old in my bed. See, I have no shame whatsoever...

Bozza · 04/01/2006 16:34

hornbag I did that to the poor midwife too. I was having a home birth so rang the maternity unit as instructed and they got in touch with the on-call midwife (it was about 6.45 am on a Saturday). She then rang me about 15 minutes later and I said I was having regular, close contractions but they weren't too bad so she could leave it a bit if she wanted. But she decided because the contractions were so close together she ought to pop over and have a check but didn't bother putting her uniform on. DD was born at 7.46 am so the midwife was still in her civvies.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 04/01/2006 16:42

I had an emema with ds1 - that was so unpleasent, id rather have done a poo in labour and not known...

I dont think i did with ds2 either, at least dh says not...

I did wee all over the midwifes hand though!

Kiwifruit · 06/01/2006 09:56

Not sure if I pooed in labour or not, but I did manage to fart in the doctor's face - twice ! Made the entire delivery room (was playing to a packed gallery...) laugh. Served her right, she refused to examine me standing up, and lying down was such agony...

mummytosteven · 06/01/2006 09:59

I really don't think there's anything you can do to prevent it. So best not to worry about it. Sh$t happens, as it were. The thing that bothered me was pooing several times during the pushing phase of labour - I was only anticipating at worst it happening once!!

blondie82 · 06/01/2006 10:16

i did during labour, but at the time i didnt even care. i think the thing that bothered me the most was the fact that there was a male student midwife in the room too. oh, and the midwife happened to say " i take it you're on iron tablets then?!"

i LOVE this thread!!

some of you are soooo funny. and i needed cheering up, so TA!

Enid · 08/01/2006 13:17

I hate the idea of crapping myself during delivery and I had 2 babies. Luckily I have always had a huge clear-out just as I have gone into labour - that and uncontrollable teeth chattering are the sure signs for me!

would hate to see it bobbing past me in the birth pool...

Klauz33 · 08/01/2006 13:21

oops with second delivery, the midwife decided that I was a bit constipated and as I had an epidural had to help me evacuate. I have actually blanked out how she did it, but have a vague memory.

She was fab and was the difference between a natural delivery and another c-section.

hornbag · 08/01/2006 13:23

Enid -I got the teeth chattering thing too -is it nerves do you think? or shock!?

NomDePlume · 08/01/2006 13:26

I didn't poo in labour with DD, I was really worried about it happening though. As it turned out I got the urge to go to the loo about 20 mins after my waters broke (2.5 hours later she was born, whole thing was 3hrs start to finish), I did have to tell the midwives at the nurse station and they gave me a covered bedpan thing to take with me so that they could assess my 'product', but I was allowed to do it in dignity in the loo on my own (thank goodness).

Skyler · 08/01/2006 13:37

I was told to take a seive into the hospital as I wanted a waterbirth with dd1. It was to fish all the bits, including poo, out of the pool so it is obviously a common thing. I did lots of little rabbit pellet type poos .
I pooed with dd2 too and knew at the time and said 'I am sorry I think I have done a poo.' The midwives said nothing to confirm or deny it and dh said it was very small and it was whipped away without a word. I asked for confirmation after the event and the midwife said I had then but only because I asked. It is so normal. I know dh will never mention it again unless I brought it up and tbh I have have had far more embarrassing things happen to me. Try not to worry. I wouldn't recommend an enema though. They used to give them routinely and don't any more. HTH.

Enid · 08/01/2006 16:25

hornbag I think its the adrenaline kicking in

Aloha · 08/01/2006 16:28

Whats a bit of poo in the grand scheme of things. i know exactly how you feel and it was my fear with dd1. I had a water birth and kept getting getting glimpses of dh leaning over the pool armed with his seive. At one point a 'bit' floated past me and in my shame I said 'oOh, is that me?' .... Well, who else would it have been ? Still makes me laugh 21 mths on. One word of advise though, don't be afraid to push for fear of poo'ing, it'll only make you feel uncomfortable and delay the inevitable

codnotamod · 09/01/2006 18:09

Gingerbear · 09/01/2006 18:13
