Probably stupid but no one know me Wink

What happens if labour starts before ELCS date?

You call and go straight in for an emergency section! Happened to me all fine!

nocake · 31/03/2011 16:10

It will depend why you're having an ELCS. If there is a medical reason why you can't deliver vaginally then you'll be rushed in for an EMCS. Normally they schedule sections well ahead of your due date so the chance of it happening is really small.

nunnie · 31/03/2011 16:11

Will they do it or try to encourage a VB? Is there a point where they will say it's too late and I will have to deliver Vaginally?

Thought you could only get them for medical reasons?
I've been told they usually schedule them for 39 weeks, my son came at 36.

can you ask for a CS then? i always thought they were only in an emergency or multiple preg? I am 29 wks and anxious about birth as was in labour for 4 days with 1st

nunnie · 31/03/2011 16:41

You can request one, and depending on your reasons they may accept your request.

SavannahRose · 31/03/2011 16:44

really?? hhhmmm might be something to look into. How many weeks do they normally do a CS?

nunnie · 31/03/2011 16:46

38-39 weeks depending on area unless needed earlier, but here it's 39.
I don't know your history or anything about your previous birth, and your request may be refused. But you could speak to your midwife for more information about it.

Thanks Nunnie :)

SavannahRose I recently had an ELCS due to anxieties about birth. The consultant wasn't happy, and I had to get the backing of a psychiatrist (the consultant sent me to one), and even then I had to argue with the consultant some more, but she did agree to it. (I also had the backing of my midwives, who felt that in my case an ELCS would be the better option.) It was at 40 weeks, as she felt that there was no medical reason that meant DS should be taken out early (although it was agreed that if I went into labour before then that they would do the CS - and I made sure that was written very clearly in my notes), which seemed fair enough to me.

discobeaver · 31/03/2011 22:07

I posted this question before, as I was worried about it, but people reassured me that as long as you make it clear you want your CS, you will get it if it's already planned. Make sure it's in your notes.

Stangirl · 03/04/2011 11:27

What discobeaver said. I had ELCS with DD(no medical reason, just didn't want to experience labour pain) and asked this question. Docs said because I had ELCS written all over my notes I would go straight to CS if I went into labour early.

lucybrad · 03/04/2011 13:12

yes they told me that if I went into labour then I would automatically have a emergency cs.

northender · 03/04/2011 13:24

I was told that if I went into labour and I decided I wanted to have a go at vb then I could and if not then I could have the CS I wanted. I didn't go into labour so had the CS as planned

inbetweener · 04/04/2011 15:19

Sorry can I just jump in here ?
stangirl did you really request an ELC because you didnt want to experience labour pain ? Were you given one without any sort of problem ? I do find that quite hard to believe.

Stangirl · 04/04/2011 18:25

inbetweener I absolutely swear that was the case. I said I was frightened of pain and that of my dozen or so closest friends who had had children 2 had nearly died in labour and several others had had the most awful complications. The Consultant said I seemed to have most unfortunate friends but just signed me up for the CS. The hospital was Kings College and I had my DD February last year.

The Consultant has to ensure that you have properly considered it and so gave me a leaflet that was supposed to explain CS and point out all the cons - unfortunately they didn't have any of that particular leaflet around and so they gave me the one meant for women who have just been told they have to have a CS on medical grounds - which was full of reassuring info and was basically a glowing recommendation for CS.

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 04/04/2011 18:44

Just to add if you are booked in for an elective for no medical reason (i.e. I had an ELCS for my second as I had had an EMCS for my first and decided I couldn't be bothered to go thru labour again) if you go into labour early and go into hospital yes you will still be given your cs BUT you will not be first on the list i.e. if it's 3am in the morning and someone else if having a real emcs for medical reasons then you might find you will be in labour for a while before you get your cs.

PrincessScrumpy · 05/04/2011 16:48

Oooh Libra that's worrying - dd arrived 2 hours after my waters went! I'm having ID twins so am having cs due to a combination of traumatic birth with dd1 and it's safer for twins. Now I'm scared as twins are likely to be early (cs booked for 37 weeks as twins aren't allowed to go beyond 38 weeks at my hospital).

kiwidreamer · 07/04/2011 18:40

And if you go to your consultants lackie at 36wks with your decision that you've decided on an ELCS (1st DC EMCS but no medical reason I can't attempt labour again just decided that the limitations and restrictions being put on me would not be conducive to labouring effectively) but say that you would consider labouring if you went naturally before your section (knowing your 1st DC was 17 days late so pretty much no chance) don't be surprised if they leave the room for 10mins to return and insist you come back next week to see the actual consultant with what appears to be the sole purpose of changing your mind.

Long winded way of saying if you really want an ELCS then don't be polite or give an inch, silly me thought previous lackie at 18wks was being honest when he said the decision was 100% mine and whatever I decided would be accommodated.

Diadem · 27/06/2012 12:21

Hello, I'm completely new here. On the site in the pregnancy department etc etc. Currently don't have clue what I'm doing. Reading a lot though....

Just a question, which consultant do ask for an C-section. Is it the normal doctor you see when you have other ilnessess or will I be meeting a new consultant when I go for my first scan.

Seems silly probably, but I honestly don't have any idea....

elizaregina · 27/06/2012 14:52

I was told if no medical reason and you go into labour - they will try and accomodate me - but of course I will be pushed down the queue if someones babies life is in danger etc...that means I could be in labour - and then it could be too late.

I am hoping to have an iron cast birth plan in place if that happens to make sure i get an epidural this time........IF i can even get into the hospital of course....as they do close it regualy due to being full.

YES you can ask for a ELC for non medical grounds and it all depends on the consultant you see.
Some it seems are very dissmissive and wont listen., some are driven by hospital c section targets, some wont budge even on medical grounds until you show them another experts findings......and some will listen and will be helpful like mine....

You dont have to have a bad previous birth either...mine was so called text book.

elizaregina · 27/06/2012 14:53

someone else said their community midwife advised them, get to hospital at first twinge to give yourself best chance of section, dont hang around at home...

ladymarian · 28/06/2012 10:01

This is a worry of mine. I'm having an ELCS for psychological reasons. I have tokophobia which was undiagnosed when I had my DD 5 years ago (annoyingly described as a textbook birth but led to 4 years of anxiety, PTSD and PND for me) I have no complaints about my treatment - consultant has been lovely, sympathetic and helpful and psychiatrist recommended I have an ELCS. I saw the consultant a couple of weeks ago and had my ELCS date confirmed as exactly 39 weeks and there is a lot of notes in bold on my file to say that if I go in to labour early I am not to attempt a VB and be taken straight in to be added to the theatre list. Consultant is fairly confident that I will still get my CS. This has been very reassuring for me as I was extremely anxious about having another VB.

Don't be fobbed off! Psychological reasons are just as valid as physical/medical reasons. Get as many people on side as you can - GP, midwife, consultant, psychiatrist.

Good Luck
