I will be 11 days over tomorrow. Had unsuccessful sweep so being induced tomorrow. I'm really excited but nervous too. Any tips? My first baby was on time so this is all new, thanks

by the way I hope the op is doing wellSmile

sieglinde · 15/03/2011 16:18

I too hope all is well for the OP.

But thing is that health care is ALSO about the unusual, not just the norm. In my case, flippin, induction was NOT as it turned out just a response to a set of dates. There was reason in it, as it turned out. It was done on dates, and thank Christ it was. So people who defy dates might be like me. They therefore take a risk.

And offhand I can't think of anything more self-indulgent than absorbing NHS resources so you can have a 'pleasant birth.' My view is that what you aim for is a live healthy baby, mum ditto, not a pleasant experience.

flippinpeedoff · 15/03/2011 16:27

hmm interesting POV. What about those women who opt for elective sections because they don't want to have VB? Those who feel they will have a more pleasant birth experience if they don't have to go through labour? I'm talking about those with no medical reason? Those who want a homebirth etc etc

I disagree, I think trying to give women a pleasant birth experience is very very important.
The fact that you were induced and that their happened to be a need that came to light is not the point I am arguing. That was a random event. Your placenta was failing and you happened to be induced and thank heavens that happened for you. If the induction timetable was set for a week later then there would have been serious issues for you. As I said the view of overdue varies wildly

sieglinde · 15/03/2011 17:32

Sorry - not following reasoning here. What about them?

I think a pleasant experience - however delightful - has to come second to straightforward medical issues - live, kicking ones. I mean, I don't see my births as failures. To me they were ravingly successful because they led to my children.

If we can truly afford the extra cost of voluntary C-sections or homebirths or whatever, then ok, but I don't want to see public money going to this and not to proper antenatal care (which I btw can still scarcely believe is entrusted to GPs and midwives, a practice unheard-of in my country!). Let me be clear. I would have liked a MORE medicalised birth and a MORE medicalised labour to reduce the risk to my dcs.

flippinpeedoff · 15/03/2011 18:00

sieglinde, we will have to agree to disagree

Rosebud05 · 15/03/2011 18:05

This topic brings out strong feelings in people, most often because of their personal experience which, given that it involves the life and death of their babies, is completely understandable.

There is a gradually increasing risk of placental failure in going overdue, albeit a small one. The majority of women are comfortable with this risk and many choose not to be induced at all. Others like me, who had a heartbreaking experience with my first baby, actively sought induction before term to minimise this risk.

There are many positive experiences of induction of this thread, and I would agree that a reasonable, preferably pleasant, birth experience is a desired outcome of childbirth.

I was induced at 38+6 due to high blood pressure. For me I'd say it wasn't as bad as I think I was expecting coz of all the induction horror stories I had heard> First gel the night before she arrived which was good as i got a fairly good night's sleep. It wasn't til the 3rd that things really sped up!! Up til then only bad crampy period like pains. Tips I'd say are:
Walk. I walked round the hospital and ran into people I work with (I work in the hospital). Wierd experience to be chatting to them when you are in the early stages!!
Magazines/Puzzles: Never been a puzzle kinda person but really did help put the time in!!!
Bath: Don't know if it much to do with it but i swear it did. I had a Hot bath, in which I started getting the urge to push! Got checked and had dilated big style since last checked not that long before! Went round to delivery then and she was here very shortly after!!
Good luck. You will be absolutely fine!!!

Glad to, flippin. Just wanted to get over to others the same point Rosebud makes; that waiting for labour to begin naturally isn't always a simple matter.

Rosebud, so sorry to hear it went wrong for you! Brave of you to post.

It's been really useful reading this thread; I have my appt for induction tomorrow at 10am and am bricking it. Had a really good Bishop's Score (9) on Monday when I had a sweep, and enough twinges etc to still hope for a natural start to labour in the next 24 hours, but shall just have to wait and see.

Congratualations, Ray, and thanks for starting this thread.
