I am going to be induced tomorrow and I'm terrified. My head has somehow only registered induction as being a terrifying thing and I need to get my head sorted about this.

Please please tell me your positive experiences and how it can go well!

I'm in a bit of a state to say the least so if you are tempted to post anything negative then PLEASE DON'T POST!!!!!!

Induced with pessary at 6am, stayed in bed till 8.

Walked for miles round the ward!

Fed up as 2cm at 1pm, convinced it was a failure.

Went to delivery at 5, dd2 born at 6!

This was 3 weeks early due to health issues, my cervix was "very unfavourable" but it was 12 hours start to finish. Was my 3rd labour.

1st baby 40+1, induced for high bp, waaaaay off anything happening naturally, 1st pessary at 7.30am, 2nd at around 1pm, 8lb4oz DD born naturally with just a graze and 20mins pushing at 7.30pm Smile

It was totally fine for me, I was monitored more with DD2 who's birth started 'naturally'.

just keep upright as much as possible, even if you are monitored thats totally possible.

good luck!

Alphabetsy · 10/02/2011 16:09

Induced with both my babies as they were overdue - both quick and complication-free. 1st labour 5 hours and 2nd labour 1 hours 50 mins. Gas and air only right at end for pushing.
Happy labouring!

pinkclouds · 10/02/2011 16:10

1st baby 40+5 pre-eclampsia. Was given one pessary at 10am.

At 1pm I had my first contraction, DD was born at 2.15pm naturally 6lb2oz.

Was fine, just slightly quicker than I had in my head Smile but that's not a bad thing.

Good luck.

With DD I was 38 weeks with a planned induction and went down to the delivery suite at the decent hour of 10am. They did my waters for me as I was 3cm dilated and I toddled about for a bit to see if anything started. I read my book and ate fish and chips for lunch and still nothing, though it was all very pleasant, chilling out with my mother.

At 2pm they put me onto a drip and I started having contrations, yay. They were quite intense and close together and after about fifteen minutes I had the gas and air. I did ask for some pethedine at just about an hour in, but the midwife checked after popping off to get it, and I was 10cms and ready to push.

Four little pushes from start to finish and DD was straight up for skin to skin and had her first feed almost immediately. I was all done after one hour and thirty four minutes from my first contraction, without even a graze to show for it.

I got the pethedine after giving birth because I had SPD and it was really sore after all the pressure came off my pelvis, then I went for a nice warm floaty bath to clean up while DD slept after her first feed.

I was back on the ward for dinner time and the very nice midwifes took DD to the nursery overnight, returning for feeds every couple of hours, whilst I slept off the labour with some more lovely pethedine.

One of my best experiences ever really.

I was induced with a very unfavourable cervix at 40+12 with ds4 - pessary in at 9pm, walked around until midnight, baby 4am next morning - gas and air for the last couple of hours - very quick pushing stage.
Hope it goes well for you.

wigglesrock · 10/02/2011 16:15

Induced with dd2, had pessary gel at 6am, watched tv, read mags, walked about, kept active, had another one at 11am, went for a couple of baths, kept mobile, had visitors, listened to i-pod. Only had 20mins of monitoring. Labour started at 4pm, had dd2 at 6.30pm, no further interventions, had dd2 kneeling at side of bed.

Really positive experience, am 39 weeks pregnant and really wouldn't mind induction again. Good luck.

mosschops30 · 10/02/2011 16:17

My induction with ds1 was wonderful (and my best birth out of the 3 of them).

Had pessary at about 7pm, they very kindly gave me some pethidine because I was niggling and I promptly went off to sleep until 4am. When I woke I was 6cm dilated. ds1 was born at 10.30am with no problems at all, just gas and air and a bit more pethidine.

Sparklies · 10/02/2011 16:19

Just wanted to say I hope everything goes really well with you tomorrow and I look forward to hearing about your beautiful new baby!!

Induced with DC 1 due to mild pre-eclampsia at 38w.

First pessary c. 1pm - not much happened, but nice afternoon reading shuffling round the hospital. Second pessary about 8.30pm. After monitoring went walking up and down corridor with DH (got up some pace!!!) -waters went about 9.45pm and contractions kicked in. Had some pethidine at some point. Examined just before midnight and only 3cm (thought might be a long night) needn't have worried as 45-60 mins later 10cm and wanted to push. DS born at 2.30am. Was allowed to be upright on knees until very shortly birth (something to do with monitor). No stitches or tears and DS fine. I found it an ok experience.

Good luck!!!

I hope you don't think that this is negative as my induction ended in a c-section but I wanted to say that induction leading to c-section was my worst nightmare beforehand but it was actually totally totally fine and I wish I hadn't spent all that time worrying about it.

The induction was fine and I had wonderful midwives who kept me informed and made me feel I had options all the way through. The c-section itself was quick I was able to hold and feed DD very quickly afterwards and it took much less time than I thought to recover. I was very tired and sore for 24 hours but up and about after 48 hrs and home the next day. After a few weeks I had pretty much forgotten about the birth to be honest.

I think the whole induction thing is less scary if you know people are listening to you so make yourself heard from the start. Try to relax - I was terrified of my induction but it really wasn't any worse than any of my friends natural labours. We are planning on ttc DC2 later this year and I wouldn't have any concerns about a second induction.

TwinkleyFairyLights · 10/02/2011 17:29

Was induced with my DS at 36+4 weeks:

pessary at 7pm, waters broken at 11pm, Ds born at 1:50am. He was my first baby and the midwife didn't believe that I could be ready to push, until she examined me! The only pain relief I needed was a few puffs of gas and air.Grin

It was actually a far easier, quicker birth than with my DD who was a natural birth.

Good luck!

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 10/02/2011 19:18

Thank you everyone - this is all really helping - I don't know why I'm being such a pickle about this!!

If I'm induced first thing, am I almost certainly guaranteed that baby will arrive tomorrow?

Just a quickie, you should get some sleep tonight!!!

My induction was fine, 1st pessary at 8am, went for lunch at Carluccio's etc, nothing happened so second pessary at 8pm, nothing really happened until 8am next day when my waters broke, totally pain free birth for rest of day, eat, drank, hubby watched footie, gave birth without drugs, had DS at 7.20pm. Tiring though, so do and try and get some sleep!!

Take care and best wishes for tomoz!

AnonymousRegular · 11/02/2011 00:26

Good luck (if you're still reading!). Have to say I was fine (augmented not induced). I did insist on an epi being sited before ARM and drip - just something you might want to consider, if you think you'd like an epi, you could ask for one to be put in place straight away.

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 11/02/2011 14:56

ah good point. well i had the gel a couple of hours ago and nothing has happened yet. drip scheduled for 6:30pm..... panic panic.

OP posts:
AnonymousRegular · 11/02/2011 16:36

OK, don't worry. Keep mobile to encouirage things along.

If you're worried about going on the drip being painful, simply tell them that they can do it as soon as the epi's in place (don't let them put you on a drip it on the promise of an epi - a friend of mine waited 5hrs while on the drip). In my labour, 15 mins after I said that an anaesthetist arrived. Was great.

You might want to check whether your dh can stay too. If he cant stay overnight you could ask to delay drip until morning.

EldritchCleavage · 11/02/2011 16:46

9 hours start to finish. One pessary. Did have epidural 4 hours in. 3 pushes and DS arrived. Worst bit was the elephantine snoring from others when I was taken back down to the maternity ward.

It does have a reputation-there were two really nice women on my ward with real problem pregnancies, really struggling, but when I said I was to be induced they looked at me as though I was the brave one. You'll only generally hear the bad stories-those of us for whom it was straightforward don't bother mentioning it.

Take boiled sweets for energy and magazines to ease the waiting. Possibly ear plugs too.

EldritchCleavage · 11/02/2011 16:47

Sorry-meant to say I did have the drip. Try and negotiate short breaks from monitoring to let you move around.

AnonymousRegular · 11/02/2011 17:14

You should be able to move a short distance evem if you have CFM. Deffo far enough to eg sit on birth ball or stand next to bed and sway hips. If all else fails, ask to go to loo and stretch your legs for a few minutes after that!

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 12/02/2011 20:54

I'm back.....!

Well - in the end, it was a 1.5 hour labour and I didn't need any pain relief at all. How brilliant is that???

Our little boy arrived last night and is totally scrummy :)
