Were you discharged the day after your ELCS?

I will be having my third DC by ELCS in February and really do not want to be in hospital any longer than necessary. My midwife told me that it is possible to go home the day after a ELCS as long as everthing is ok. Has anyone done this and did it work out OK?

Thanks.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It seems, then, that if everything goes ok, it may well be a possibility that I'll be able to leave the next day Grin. Oh I hope so!

I had a elective c-section last lunchtime last Thursday and was home Saturday morning. The postnatal ward was so noisy, lights were on all night, staff decorating the ward at 1am in the morning, staff to busy to get me pain relief on time, reduced visiting hours so little help with baby. I had to discharge myself but knew I was going home to my very helpful husband and mother and could stay in bed if I needed too, could administer my own pain relief, and would have visits from the community midwife each day. I also felt fine (if a bit bruised) and really missed my young daughter. SHO was not happy but that was because I was breaking the three day protocol rather than concern about my health. I had read the NICE guidelines before going in and they say that if all is well it is ok to go home after 24 hours.

Good luck

With dc3 I discharged myself 36 hours after. They wanted me to stay until the morning, I couldn't face another 15 hours of it so off I went.

I was quite sore when I got home, but popped some pills and installed myself on the sofa. It was pure bliss to be in my nice quiet home with dp making me tea and snacks. Shock horror I actually managed to sleep.

The midwives couldn't understand why I wanted to go, but for me it was horrible. Hot, noisy, lonely, hell. I didn't get 1 wink of sleep in 48 hours and every single frigging time I got a boob out some midwife would come by and pull the curtains back. We were both fine btw, midwife visited the morning after.

48 hours after my second ELCS. Was much more comfortable at home. Dh much more attentive than staff at my maternity hospital and my house is much quieter.

all of the above make sense to me,i waited a bout 8 hrs for pain relief last time and when i got it it was paracetamol!!!Dont even bother with that for a headache.I have some codiene packed in my hospital bag but yes dh will be a far better nurse than anyone else and he knows to leave my tea bag in the cup.

I think if everything goes fine there is a chance you can go home the next day.

Another thing to keep in mind is to let them (and I mean every single mw you come into contact with!)know that you would like to be discharged asap. That way you won't be held up because of the Paed. check or the prescription from the Pharmacy.

I was in 48hrs after ELCS with DD but if things go as smoothly with DC2 next year I will press to discharge in 24hrs. I am fat, unfit and over 40 but was lucky that the ELCS was straightforward and I didn't experience any pain afterwards.

I don't wear jeans.

I was discharged 36 hours after an EMCS, and was assuming it would be the same for an ELCS provided there aren't complications.

WidowWadman · 13/12/2010 21:07

Oh, and, even if Elspeth doesn't like it, but I hobbled to the chippie round the corner to get dinner on the evening of my discharge, as I wanted to clear my head and just have a quick walk on my own.
My midwife was quite surprised when I mentioned it to her, but nobody had told me that I couldn't or shouldn't go for a walk, so it didn't occurr to me that it could be an unusual thing to do.

discharged myself on day 3 with ds3 they wanted me to stay for 5 days

rosieposey · 13/12/2010 21:26

DS was delivered at 5pm on Friday and i was out by 11.30 on Sunday so under 48 hours which was perfect for me.

If i could do it again that would be an ideal timeframe for me.

I definately needed painkillers (stopped in mothercareworld on the way home and that was silly as it was all icy and snowy outside) but Im glad i did get home as there is nothing better than being all snuggly and cuddly in bed with your new baby and DH.

No Widow I don't like it, I mean chips. Tsk. If it had been a curry, totally acceptable Grin

StarlightPrincess · 15/12/2010 22:34

I had my daughter at 2.30pm, was up out of bed by 8.30pm and home the next day. All the nurses seemed rather surprised that I recovered so quickly, I didn't even have any extra pain meds after the initial spinal, just a Piriton to get rid of the damned itching side-effect.

Well this is cheering me somewhat. I am very much part of the natural birth brigade, based on my healthy fear of hospitals and all things medical - keep me off that conveyer belt!!!!

Anyway, I am also a realist and although birth number 1 was exactly as planned ( still in hospital as I had the later mentioned GD and GD then so was classes as high rik), the imminent birth of DD2 is conspiring against my hippy tendencies. At 34 weeks I have a rare combination of Gestational Diabetes and Graves Disease, a low lying placenta and a breech baby. Funnily enough my consultant is keen on but not yet pushing the ELSC route but we're taking it one scan at a time - next scan this afternoon.

I managed 24 hours in hospital last time and I hated the smell, noise, heat, food, lack of privacy etc. etc. and this time I may be at a hospital much further away from all family and friends and I have DD1 to miss too. I'll have to do 24hours to ensure the baby is not effected by my GD, but the fact that there maybe a possibility of being home soon after that pleases me. I know it's not guarenteed.

I opened this thread hoping I wouldn't see a long list of - no you'll have to be in at least 4 days and then some. Tis nice to know things are possible so thank you. I shall go to my appointment this afternoon calmer and thinking more positive healing thoughts ( back to hippy tendencies).

Sparklies · 16/12/2010 16:41

This is so reassuring! Most of my reasons for wanting to go private with my ELCS are because I can't do the postnatal ward again. I was sure you had to have at least 2-3 nights in. I had 3 nights with DD1 after I was readmitted due to PPH after a vaginal birth, and 3 nights with DD2 after EMCS because she had low blood sugar as she was 35 weeks. Never, ever again.

Now, if I can just get this baby to at least 37 weeks (this would be a first, but there is hope this time out) I stand a hope in hell of getting out of there after just one night of hell. One night I can do. It's the thought of three or more again that sends me into knots of panic!!
