Were you discharged the day after your ELCS?

I will be having my third DC by ELCS in February and really do not want to be in hospital any longer than necessary. My midwife told me that it is possible to go home the day after a ELCS as long as everthing is ok. Has anyone done this and did it work out OK?

Thanks.

I didn't get discharged the day after but had ds at 4pm on Sunday and went home on tuesday morning- in retrospect I wish I had stayed longer but they put lots of pressure on me to go home (then wrote in my notes that I'd requested early discharge!)

SlightlyTubbyHali · 12/12/2010 19:47

My friend did this, she was fine.

I had an emcs and my IM was prepared to take me home after 24 hours but my blood pressure had other plans.

If you can rest at home and they send you home with sufficient pain pills you might be better off there than in the hospital.

DefNotYummyMummy · 12/12/2010 20:23

I had baby on a Friday at 11am and they let me go home on Sunday (am).

I had a good support at home and found I recovered well and I didn't even need all the painkillers.

That was my second CS. My first was an EMCS.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 12/12/2010 20:27

I had ds1 by emerg section at 6am on Sunday and was at home for lunch on Monday - at my request.

I made sure the canula and catheter were taken out asap and I got on my feet as soon as I got the feeling back too. Admittedly it was a hunched over shuffle of a few metres at first, but I quickly got to walking a decent distance - albeit very slowly!

I felt fine and I wanted to be out of hospital pdq. I got more rest and better care at home than I ever did in hospital. I also had a very quick and easy recovery.

snowmummy · 12/12/2010 20:57

Thanks for your encouraging replies.

I want to go home as soon as because I think I'll be better looked after at home. My second DC was born by ELCS. I was in for 2 nights and it was horrible in hospital. I really want to minimise my stay in hospital.

I stayed 3 nights each time, both EMCS after long labours though, 2 nights of no sleep preceding them.

I was desperate to leave sooner but just didn't feel well enough TBH. And the first was a GA so I was pretty zonked for a while.

An ELCS sounds quite nice TBH, in the unlikely event of another baby I would be having one tooSmile

geordieminx · 12/12/2010 21:08

I had an emergency c/s at 1pm on the Friday, was home by 7pm on Sat,1st child.

I had no sleep, no help so decided I was better off at home with dh.

Consultant was keen for me to stay another 24 hours, until I overtook him in the corridor. Grin

Was at star bucks by 11am on Sunday.

Mercedes519 · 12/12/2010 21:10

snowmummy if you can find out how they will close the section that might help. I had dissolvable stitches the first time and was up and around comfortably a lot quicker whereas with DD I had staples which were a lot more painful. Wasn't discharged until day 3 but had feeding problems so bear in mind that there may be other things that keep you in.

eviscerateyourmemory · 12/12/2010 21:10

I have gone home the day after CS twice. I thought that I would be better off at home, and didnt want to stay in the not especially clean hospital environment.

It is doable. If you do want to go home on the day after you might need to be a bit proactive about making sure that the midwives know on the morning of that day that you are going to be discharged, so that they can get everything organised in good time for you going.

bamboostalks · 12/12/2010 21:10

Had my emergency section at 12.30pm and was discharged at 8am the following day.

ilovesprouts · 12/12/2010 21:12

i had my cs at 12 dinner time and went home 48 hours afer

herbgarden · 12/12/2010 21:15

2nd CS I had DD about 3.30pm Friday and went home about 4ish on Sunday afternoon. I couldn't wait to get out of the noise and frustration of the post op csection ward - horrible. I was in a lot of pain on the saturday and ended up having a pain killer shot so I'm glad that I hadn't gone home so soon....I think though you need to make sure you really do have someone around to do stuff. I wish I'd put my feet up - on reflection I looked and felt like shite but was still trying to put washing on Confused.....am incapable of sitting down for very long.

dearprudenceandtheivy · 12/12/2010 21:16

I had DS on Friday morning. They wanted to keep me in for five days!

By Saturday morning I felt fine. No pain relief needed, could move around (slowly), change and feed DS. I was desperate to go home but was told that consultant didn't want me to.

I signed my own discharge on Monday morning. I could easily have gone home after 24 hours, but I was nervous of going against the opinion of the 'experts'.

snowmummy · 12/12/2010 21:17

Mercedes - I had staples last time. Can I request an alternative? I'm worried they're going to think I'm a pain if I go in there with a list of requests. I also want skin to skin contact while they're closing me up!

I went home 48 hours after mine.

Geordie Minx's statement 'I was at starbucks on monday' makes me want to grind my teeth. Bully for you love but it certainly isn't like that for most people and going out for coffee so soon after a major operation is perhaps foolish rather than commendable Hmm

If you are REALLY sure you will have better care at home then try it but I'd prepare to be in for at least 48hrs.

cakeywakey · 12/12/2010 21:20

I had an ELCS a few months ago and they did try to shift me the next morning, so it is doable. I wouldn't budge though, especially as neither I nor DD2 had been checked over at the point they were trying to strongarm me Hmm

eviscerateyourmemory · 12/12/2010 21:25

I had staples both times, I didnt find it a problem.
No harm in asking about sutures if that is what you want.

cath476 · 12/12/2010 21:26

I had ds3 on Tuesday by ELCS at 12.30pm. I was discharged on Wednesday at 3.30pm at the hospital's suggestion. I was surprised to be honest and had expected a minimum of 2 nights in hospital but I felt fine and couldn't wait to get home. We are now on day 5 and I actually forgot to take painkillers today! DS3 is gorgeous btw and we are totally in love with him!

geordieminx · 12/12/2010 21:27

Ouch. I wouldn't say to was foolish at all. I am young and fit. It was one of the hottest weekends on the year, my husband drove the 3 miles to town, we had a slow walk, coffee and then came home, I didn't exactly run a marathon.

Grind your teeth all you like love.

UnpureAsTheDrivenSHOW · 12/12/2010 21:31

I was discharged 12hrs post emergency cs.

In terms of sutures, I think it's often surgeon's preference but no reason why you can't request one over another and see what they say. I had a single stitch with a bead at each end and found it fine.

KangarooCaught · 12/12/2010 21:32

Had an ELCS recently, had dc Wed morning, home Friday morning (they like you to remove the bandage in the morning in the shower and check the wound). No staples, dissolving stitches. Took plenty of pain-relief & was absolutely fine, minimal discomfort. Took it easy first couple of days at home, but able to change dc on the floor etc.

Held dc v soon after he was born and then skin-to-skin in the recovery room where they monitor you for half an hour before returning to the ward - and thereafter plenty of skin-to-skin too. Because everyone expects you to sit/lie around afterwards v good for establishing bf if you want to.

There is a thread about what to take in your hospital bag for an ELCS and general advice which I can link for you, if you'd like?

ElspethDiggory · 12/12/2010 21:33

GM - I'm sure you were back in your size 8 jeans the next day too Hmm

snowmummy · 12/12/2010 21:33

If you could link Kangaroo, that'd be great.

Elspeth, it's as valid as anybody else's experience. I had no physical problems post emcs. I was discharged 12hrs later, took no painkillers at all once the spinal block had worn off and was up and about straight away, albeit gingerly. Some women have easy recoveries and that's just fine to say.

KangarooCaught · 12/12/2010 21:35

Sounds lovely GeorgieMinx Smile We're just sharing experiences to hopefully help the OP - no need to slap anyone down, surely.
