ASD is the new ADHD

I have just joined (I am Grandma to 8 week old 1st grandchild)
I was the 1st person in England to be awarded DLA and Care Allowance for my son..who was 13 at the time...and he is still getting DLA now at 33 years old.!
It took 18 months of (embarrassing) honesty..insisting the DWP spend time at my home watching him..school reports..home diaries...doctors reports et al.
When his DLA came up for review last year it was 'rubber stamped' and awarded for a further three years because the DWP regard a diagnosis of ADHD as unquestionable.!

It seems to me that we are still lucky enough to be bringing up children with ADHD...and yes it is very challenging.
I have answers to lots of your questions about behaviour because of my experience and my regrets for not standing my ground and insisting he was nothing more than an individual.

It seems possible to me that the DWP have renamed ADHD to ASD(Autistic Spectrum Disorder) in order to test you to the limits to allow you to be awarded what is rightfully yours. Indeed..his award notice stated he had ASD...which I vehemently denied and insisted they got his diagnosis right and amended his records to show ADHD.

There is much to be discussed on this issue..and maybe I could offer some words of wisdom and some ways to deal with behaviour issues..not just with the child...but also those who will at times be responsible for him (i.e Schools)

Talk to me please.....

Well DS1's dual diagnosis of ADHD and ASD will definitely confound the DWP, then. Though we've never been awarded DLA on the basis of diagnosis, but on the basis of a young adolescent still needing the care and supervision of a particularly impulsive 4 year old.

Incidentally, I also can't write. It's a condition I like to call 'grammatically challenged'. My ds with ASD has the same condition. I might insist it replaces his ASD dx on his DLA form.

I for one would love to hear your wisdom op on how to deal with schools. You tell me how I educate teachers about ADHD because I have tried and failed.

Crusoe the information Mick4 has is wrong, if you tried to educate anyone with it you would be laughed at.

If you would like to find ways to educate the school teachers the SN chat or SN children board is the best place to ask.

What makes you think I'm not under 50 then zzzzz? Is it my acute wisdom, or just you know, my 'feelings'. Though I'm right up there with experience AND knowledge of course.

Morse code Grin

I actually don't understand your posts. And before you skate my abilities it's because they are sporadic and no real sentences are used. Not what I'd expect from someone who apparently wrote literature to be circulated widely for a living.

As for DLA, when my DS was awarded 2 years ago we had no diagnosis. We had reports, needs, evidence of support etc. we now have a dx but nothing has changed.

I don't expect when I eventually have to renew his dla it will state his diagnosis. It will continue to state his level of award and why.

I'm only just under 50. Does that mean once I'm 50 I turn into the all-knowing guru of ADHD/ASD? Grin Cool - I'll be a guru by Christmas!

I can't understand the original post. Sorry. It's been a long day.

But dla has nothing to do with diagnosis. It is about a child needing significantly more care than a child of the same age. Because of this we were awarded high rate care for ds aged 2.8 at the time without a diagnosis - he is being assessed for autism and developmental delay.

I'm sorry you obviously feel so angry with the world. Your age doesn't command respect in itself, you will gain respect by producing coherent posts the resonate with the reader.

ASD and ADHD are neurological conditions, not mental health conditions. Can you explain why you think otherwise?
