Does it eventually grow back or is it gone forever once they've pecked it to death??

tbh i'd kill the canaroes (or let them free) and get the chickens. we have a flyte so fancy maggies henhouse which is fab and we got it a we worked out we shall have chickens forever and as we were moving sacrificed some of our equity for it. but our best mates converted an old shed in tehir garden and added a run, built the nest box from an old kitchen cabinet. they started with 3 and now have 15! get those chickens now!

The eglu house is fine for size, it is the run that is the limiting factor imo.

ska · 23/03/2008 08:43

yes we generally have 6 - 8 hens of mixed sizes but have always had a house/run big enough for 12

ladytophamhatt · 23/03/2008 08:56

I like this one, has anyone go it?

Dh likes the eglu beacsue of teh pull out tray from cleaning and the fact that you can jet wash it when needed.

I like the Flyes of Fancy one because you could actually get inside teh run with them when you need too....

What are the pros and cons of each?

OP posts:
ladytophamhatt · 23/03/2008 09:02

and its pretty....

DH also said the eglu will have better re-sale value if we have to sell in the future.

I want pretty.

He want practicality.

That does look a nice one LTH - I would mod it and put a roof of some sort over the run as then you don't need to clean it as often!

Ease of cleaning is the big selling point of the eglu I think. I wonder how easy that Flytes of Fancy one would be to clean - it's not really big enough to be easy to 'walk in and clean' but then might be too heavy to move to clean. If it's light enough to lift, then you can clean the run just by lifting it off and shovelling everything up.

ladytophamhatt · 23/03/2008 09:03

It does say in the info about the "ease of cleaning" but I can't work out how/why

quarkee · 23/03/2008 09:44

we had a house from foresham it was great

ska · 23/03/2008 11:22

our flytes so fancy one is maggies henhouse and it is quite easy really - we dont do it very often tbh - just pull out the tray and clean it off and rub the roost bars sometimes. we can get in the run but more often send in the 8 yr old

ladytophamhatt · 23/03/2008 14:10

Ok, you've converted us both....this one now

OP posts:
ska · 23/03/2008 15:39

ladytophamhatt · 23/03/2008 16:52

Although after i posted that I caught DH look at the maggies henhouses to....

Anyway, we're not getting a eglu so you'll all be pleased abou t that. I feel like I'm in a little secret gang

tortoiseSHELL · 23/03/2008 16:56

That looks lovely LTH! Welcome to the clique!

GentleOtter · 23/03/2008 17:06

I've got henhouse envy

ladytophamhatt · 23/03/2008 17:07

Just need to buy it a get some chooks now.....

OP posts:
tortoiseSHELL · 23/03/2008 17:16

Me too GentleOtter - I REALLY want to build a walk in run, with a house on legs, roof covering the lot, but think will have to wait at least until next year. And I want some more chickens!

marmadukescarlet · 23/03/2008 17:21

Yippee LTH, another convert to cuteness!

The woman at FofF was v helpful on phone, she is putting door on both sides of run, fiddled about with deliveries so I can get it at the right time etc.

I've just come back from a chicken keepers startup course in deepest Essex, where we were taught handling, wing clipping etc

The only thing I would say about the hen house you have chosen is put liberal amounts of louse powder under those removable nestboxes. Well, thats what the woman on the course told us anyway.

ska · 23/03/2008 17:55

the flytes so fancy people are great - we put our run together inside out and tehy patiently emailed us pics and extra instructions and finally talked us through it!

ladytophamhatt · 23/03/2008 18:57

I love the little sentence in the info aboutthe heart shape window.

"not compulsary-just cute"

I want 2 haert shaped windows

OP posts:
ska · 23/03/2008 19:36

yes it is sweet but in reality if you attach the run to the house most of the window is obscured - so get the heart put on the side?

GentleOtter · 23/03/2008 22:00

Oh God I want heart shaped windows too.
Our broody box is a tea chest with a sack on the front .

GentleOtter · 23/03/2008 22:04

fancy pants hen house

ska · 24/03/2008 12:59

hmm, slightly above my budget tho'!

GentleOtter · 24/03/2008 13:22

It does not have heart shaped windows ska...plus notice the poultry are everywhere rather than going IN to it

GentleOtter · 24/03/2008 13:25

Yes, the 'thing' in the doorway is actually a rolled up newspaper with a feather stuck in.
God, I'm fed up. It is a whiteout blizzard outside and our boiler broke.
