Do I really have to keep them in?

For 30 days?
I have too chickens. Rescued from a horrible farm where they were shut in. I really really don't want to lock them up again for 30 days. It feels cruel. Am I risking their lives only? Or is there any danger to humans/other birds/pets?

So if my area hasn't got any colours on the map does that mean I can let them out next week?

TheDrsDocMartens · 23/02/2017 00:14

We are still in a zone , ours are doing ok though. Still laying well and not had any fights.,

I've been naughty and just let mine out, so a day early. I'm at work the rest of the week and letting them out involved about an hour of some serious physical work to restructure stuff. I wouldn't have time if I didn't do it today until next week. Can't believe the danger is any greater this afternoon than tomorrow morning and I'm the only person I know in the village who has followed the rules!

Chickens look happier already. They're so depressed they haven't come out the coop into the indoor run for the last couple of weeks. Just spend all day and night sat in the coop.

I'm so excited about letting them out tomorrow.

I'm hoping I don't spoil it by forgetting to shut them up safely in the evening!

I've just asked about this on another thread. Are they allowed out now? DH said he saw some people checking the hens at a nearby neighbour's farm just last week so I'm really not sure.

steppemum · 06/03/2017 13:58

Mine are out. I am afraid I didn't actually check the map to see if our area is allowed, I just let them out.

They are SO happy. Couldn't get them back in the first night, had to wait until they had properly gone to bed.

neighbours have never had theirs in, so not sure why I bothered, but wanted to be correct etc.

I'm orange on the map so mine are still in Sad

Mine are allowed out as we are ok in our area. I've been looking forward to letting them out for so long and I did open their gate, but then they rushed over to where I hang the wild bird feeders (well away from their run) and started pecking about and I panicked a bit. After all, some of the country still has restrictions so we are not out of the woods yet, and what if I've kept them in all this time and then they go and catch something anyway the minute I let them out? I haven't let them out since and now feel doubly mean. Am I just being daft do you think?

Ours are still in.
