Hi I claim carers allowance for my son and have done for over 3 years he is 14 now he doesn’t need help with personal care, more prompting to bath brush teeth road safety etc
I have just been diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis and being put on the waiting list for double hip replacement I haven’t been able to walk without pain and a limp for over a year, on strong medication and crutches until whenever I have surgery after chatting to surgeon he suggested I should look into claiming pip as my recovery is likely to be long and will still have osteoarthritis even with my new hips .
my question is do I carry on claiming carers allowance for my son or cancel it then apply for pip? As I really don’t understand the rules regarding this .

Any advice

As it’s your child you would be expected to be his carer so it’s fine to continue to claim carers allowance and claim pip. It’s also as you say not physical care.

My neighbour had a brain injury after a car crash, her husband was blinded. They both got full PIP and carers allowance for each other.

It sounds like they have had a pretty rough time of it. Hopefully the PIP, and carers allowance will make their lives a little bit easier.

Thank you

I have PIP at the highest rates as an ongoing award (very difficult to get) and I get carers allowance for my son who has autism. Most of his care now is coaxing and motivating him to take care of himself, most of my needs are physical. So it’s fine. It works for us.

If you can claim carers allowance you should, even if you do “lose” it through UC because claiming carers allowance gives you NI credits towards your state pension.

You can get a carers element added through UC regardless of the carers allowance - my dh gets carers element for me even though he works full time and doesn’t qualify for carers allowance.

I get uc and ca. If I only got uc, for instance, wouldn't that still give me my stamp?

You can get a carers element on UC instead of claiming carers allowance. If you qualify for PIP you should get the allowance that means you don't have to look for work or do any work related activity.

If you are spending 30+ hours caring for somebody not sure how you are eligible for PIP.

Because not everyone needs physical care - my son has autism and learning disabilities but doesn’t need me to physically do anything for him (he’s a teen). He needs me to remind him / motivate him / organise him. It’s entirely possible to be physically disabled and to care for someone else. I do it. People do it all the time.
