Rear Facing Car Seat

ArcticRain · 20/08/2012 16:50

DD is 8 months, only 15lbs. We have a Group 0 car seat on loan from sister. She now needs this back for Novmeber. I wanted a Group 1 rear facing car seat, and have found one in John Lewis, however, I dont think she is going to be big enough for it by November, as the min weight is 20lbs.

Anyone know of a Group 0+1 rear facing seat? Or am I going to have to buy another Group 0 for a couple of months?

what seat is it you're looking at as the rear facing ones dont tend to have the 9kg/20lb minimum limits? Those minimums are normally for forward facing.

ArcticRain · 20/08/2012 20:52

It's the Recaro Polaric.

I just have a kiddicare one which is rearfacing birth 13kg, and then forward facing to 25kg I think.

Rubirosa · 20/08/2012 20:57

Sorry, forward facing til 18kg (4 years). If you look on the kiddicare website there are loads of birth-4 seats from about £35 to £300.

I got my britax 2 way elite from the in car safety centre in Milton Keynes. They are very helpful at advising over the phone and have videos online as to how to fit them. They can deliver all over the UK. They can probably help you find the next RF seat up from your class 0.

RugBugs · 20/08/2012 21:02

We have a britax eclipse from John Lewis (in a cow print ha!) it's rear facing birth to 13kgs.
We got it for the same reason, even at 9kg the group 1 seats seemed huge!

ArcticRain · 20/08/2012 21:06

What age is 13kgs generally ?

OP posts:
RugBugs · 20/08/2012 21:23

DD hit 13kg at around 18 months but she's In the 91st centile. A 50th centile baby will be 2 before they hit 13kg.

ArcticRain · 20/08/2012 21:25

DD is 25th. I'll take a look thanks .

Oh bloody hell, it's a 'first class plus' not an eclipse.
Brain not functioning today Sad

Britax hi way? Suitable from birth and a ERF

blueberryboybait · 20/08/2012 22:19

DD2 is 2.3 and is 11.9kgs. She is in a Besafe Izi combi x3 and has been since 9 months. DD1 is 4 and still in her (exact same) seat too with 2kgs to go before she hits 18kgs.

lagoonhaze · 20/08/2012 22:23

PS the recaro is isofix only isnt it? Could be tricky if you have car troubles and need a belted option.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 20/08/2012 22:24

We have Britax First Class Plus. DD loves it.

MyDogShitsMoney · 20/08/2012 22:27

I have a Britax Maxway, you can buy them from Volvo dealerships so easier to get. Does birth to 25kg rear-facing then converts to a high backed booster.

BertieBotts · 20/08/2012 22:27

There are some extended rear facing seats which start from 0kg.

It is possible to get a group 0+1 seat but they tend to only be rear facing until 13kg, so not as long as the ERF seats. DS was 25th centile at 8 months too but somewhere between age 1 and age 2 he jumped massively and he's now between the 75th and 90th, he still looks skinny/average though, I guess his height must match up - people often say he seems tall for his age.

Plus, the group 0+1 seats are really only designed with babies up to about a year in mind, an older child won't be able to see out of the window and there won't be as much legroom as you'd get in an ERF seat (because the seat depth will likely be shallower). She might not mind this at all (I am usually baffled by people who say their DC wouldn't like rear facing if they'd have never known anything else!) but equally it might be something you want to consider.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 20/08/2012 22:29

Oh. BTW my DD is 2 in November!

Rubirosa · 20/08/2012 22:31

DS is 11.6kg and 2 (somewhere between 25th-50th centile).

lagoonhaze · 20/08/2012 23:02

Does the maxway come from volvo as well as the multitech?

MyDogShitsMoney · 21/08/2012 00:32

Crap, I was lying, I have the multi-tech.

(Do I get the prize for the most unhelpful post?)

It was unintentional honest guv Blush

ArcticRain · 21/08/2012 19:24

Thanks for your advise . Just doing some research on suggestions .

What is ERF?

OP posts:
OnlyWantsOne · 21/08/2012 19:29

Extended rear facing

OnlyWantsOne · 21/08/2012 19:30

Which is keeping your child rear facing (and 5x safer than forward facing)

Instead of turning them forward facing.

BertieBotts · 21/08/2012 19:33

ERF in this context means a group 1 rear facing seat as opposed to a group 0 RF seat or group 0+1 (which is effectively a bigger group 0 seat).

mybootsaremuddy · 21/08/2012 19:34

ERF= Extended rear facing. Some seats rear face up too 18kg (4yrs ish) and some even to 25kg (6yrs ish).

I can highly recomend the 'I car saftey centre' In Milton Keynes even if you are not near them they can advise you over the phone of your options. They have a realy good web site as well here.
