To move my 2 year old into a high back booster?

I have two ready-made children (aged 3.5 and very nearly 2) and one cooking. The 3rd arrives in January and so the inevitable problem of fitting us all in a car is looming...

My DD2 will be 2 in a couple of weeks and is a chunky one, currently weighing in at anywhere between 13.9kg and 14.9kg depending on the time of day (and I think the scales must be slightly dodgy too!). Assuming she reaches the full 15kg (or very near) by the time #3 is fully cooked, is she okay to go in a high back booster designed for 15kg+ (but 4yrs)? (Looking at the Britax adventure atm)

I wouldn't.

Are you weighing her naked? as what she's wearing can have an effect on what the scales read.

Although she might be at the minimum weight, she will still be safer in the current 5-point harness seat she is in. They are suitable to 18kg.

Plus, at 2 there is always the likelihood that she will move the belt out of position to behind her back or will pull it to underneath her arms.

Am I missing something - Whats the space advantage of a seatbelt on a high back booster over the harness on the same?

BubbaAndBump · 03/10/2010 13:47

Antagony - I haven't looked into a combi-harness one much because she would only need it for a few months, but a high-back booster would be a space-saver because it is so much slimmer than a 5-point harness one. We can't fit three children in the car with one in a baby seat, one in a 5-point 2nd stage (?) one and the third in a high-backed booster. Therein lies our problem...

Have a look at and this. is it really worth the risk?

Ideally children should be rear facing until 4, it's to do with relative head size and neck strength here. A 5 point harness is an absolute MUST in any case.

Eglu · 03/10/2010 13:57

I wouldn't put a child that young into a booster seat with seatbelt. They really shouldn't have seatbelt only until 4, so you wouldn't just be using the harness for a few months. It would be over a year.

Shoshe · 03/10/2010 13:58

As a CM I have these the same size as a highback booster, but with the 5 point, in fact They stay in them till they are old enough for a plain booster, I just take the harness off and use them with the seat belt, then take the back off and just use the booster.

BubbaAndBump · 03/10/2010 13:58

I'm not advocating "risking" my child's life, I'm asking for advice, not having had to consider moving my DCs out of a 5-point harness before.

shoshe are they really as slim as a high-back booster? We have maxi-cosis currently, but their bases make them huge and we cannot fit two of them and a baby seat (we can't even fit one of them, the high-back for my elder and the baby seat)

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 03/10/2010 14:00

Of course your not, but that's what putting her in a seat without a 5 point harness would be doing. Would the seat Shoshe linked to fit?

thisisyesterday · 03/10/2010 14:00

yes yabvvvu!

she needs to be at least 3

sorry... but what price her safety?

thisisyesterday · 03/10/2010 14:01

oh and for the record, i have 3 seats across the back of my car (volvo v70)

a britax adventure, a britax 2 way elite and a besafe izi combi
the latter 2 are both fully harnessed rear-facing group 1 seats

i think there are pics on my profile

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 03/10/2010 14:02

Dimensions of the seat shoshe linked to: width. 45cm x depth. 53cm x height. da 70 a 84 cm

BubbaAndBump · 03/10/2010 14:03

thisisyesterday this isn't a AIBU thread. This is a thread on car safety with me asking for advice (my original question was is she okay to fit in...) - the answer from all the above is clearly no, she wouldn't be okay.

I'll look into the kind that shoshe linked to fermina, thanks for tips.

OP - get a HBB that does have a 5 point harness :)

Shoshe · 03/10/2010 14:05

Yes Bubba they are the same size as a highback, think they do asimilar in Toysrus let me look

IUsedToBeFab · 03/10/2010 14:06

A 2 year old still needs a 5 point harness car seat.

IUsedToBeFab · 03/10/2010 14:07

You might have to get a new car. We had a third, couldn't get them all in so bought a new car.

BubbaAndBump · 03/10/2010 14:08

That seems like a sensible suggestion jareth, thank you. I've seen there are some combi ones where you can remove the harness further on down the line I think once the child is old enough.

Just sent my DH off to see if he can actually fit between the two maxi-cosis we have currently. If he can, then another option would be to put one of the child seats in the front (airbags disabled) with DH squeezed into the back.

Shoshe · 03/10/2010 14:08

Here and half the price, have you a ToysRus near you you could go look at?

BubbaAndBump · 03/10/2010 14:09

That's what I'm trying to avoid usedtobefab ~ if at all possible. Obviously if that's our only option, that's what we'll have to do.

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 03/10/2010 14:09

hmm you're right, i don't know why i thought it was! but you would be unreasonable to do it! lol

agree with keeping them rearfacing personally. but if you're going to go forward facing then either something like the britax evolva 1-2-3 or the kiddyinfin infinity pro would be my choice

mamatomany · 03/10/2010 14:09

We use the car a lot less these days, if they can't all be strapped in safely then i take 2 cars or walk, if DH isn't around and if i can't walk we don't go tbh.

Shoshe · 03/10/2010 14:09

I actually bought my Nania ones from ebay, they were half the price.

BubbaAndBump · 03/10/2010 14:10

Don't have one near us shoshe but that's really helpful - it looks good and secure too - well worth a trek to one of their stores.

is a new car absolutely out of the question?
