To move my 2 year old into a high back booster?

I have two ready-made children (aged 3.5 and very nearly 2) and one cooking. The 3rd arrives in January and so the inevitable problem of fitting us all in a car is looming...

My DD2 will be 2 in a couple of weeks and is a chunky one, currently weighing in at anywhere between 13.9kg and 14.9kg depending on the time of day (and I think the scales must be slightly dodgy too!). Assuming she reaches the full 15kg (or very near) by the time #3 is fully cooked, is she okay to go in a high back booster designed for 15kg+ (but 4yrs)? (Looking at the Britax adventure atm)

thisisyesterday - I thought it was AIBU at first to, it's the title that does it. Most titles staring "To..." are.

mamatomany we use the car frequently to visit family (some an hour away, some 6 hours away) hence the need to get something permanent.

To be or not to be? Hmm :)

I could get one of these and two of the Nanias accross the middle seats of a zafira if that helps.

We don't have the money for a new car, we would have to be even tighter on our budgets than we currently are. We drive a prius which was an environmental choice for us, so would like to continue using it if we could. DH has come back and said he can fit in, but not comfortably, so a new car may well be the only option (or sell DH) :o

shoshe halfords also stock the beline xp at the same price as toysRus and there's one local to us, so I'll head there I think. Def. think DH could squeeze in between two of those more easily...

IME experience the tops of HI back boosters are very wide and I have actually found it harder to fit two of them alongside a baby seat in our car in the past rather than one hi back and two five point harness ones.

So another hi back may not solve your problem anyway.

ANTagony · 03/10/2010 14:21

The five point harness is actually slightly easier to fasten when you've got three seats filling the back seat - because you're not having to shove the other seats out the way to find the seat belt thing.

For the other seat belt based seat you can get a seat belt extender so that the clip actually sits onto the booster - again saves routing around when its raining and you've got three to get strapped in.

I have a Hyundai I10 (very small car) and it fits three car seats in the back - one booster, one high back and one bulky forward facing with a five point harness. The biggest issue is getting to the seat belt points so I brought two of these and problem solved.

you need a multimac!

i remember reading a few threads warning people about nania seats
apparently not very well made. obv they havve to meet safety standardws... but there are seats that barely meet the standards and seats that far outstrip them

just be careful what you buy. look up reviews online

CrispyTheCrisp · 03/10/2010 15:14

I managed to fit two 5pt harness car seats in my car with the baby seat in the middle (although couldn't use the autobase IIRC). Because the baby 'carrier' type seats are bulky at the bottom and the other seats bulkier at the top it seemed to (just about) work. You couln't have fitted an adult between the two seats though

castleonthehill · 04/10/2010 00:45

I would take you car to a shop that sell car seat ( a good one ) and try three that work in your car. Buying three new seat might be cheaper than buying a new car. Sometimes it makes a big difference which order you have the seats in and which order you strap them in . What car do you have someone on here may have 3dc and the same car as you

sazm · 09/10/2010 14:59

thisisyesterday - the multimacx is the same price as a second hand people carrier!

i have a maxi-cosi cabrio in the middle of the back seat with a britax hi-liner (same as the britax adventure) on either side for my eldest 2, now lo has outgrown the maxi-cosi and we have a britax eclipse in the middle.
you could go for one of the ones from argos with the harness, but is a cheap seat with a harness safer than a good high-backed booster if the child is over 15kg????obv you know your child and know whether being it just a seatbelt will cause problems.

my dd was 17kg at 3yo,she was in a highbacked booster because the britax evolva 1-2-3 she was in was far too wide to fit in with our other seat.

SmacsGotABigWitchyWart · 16/10/2010 21:28

I saw this advertised on mothercare and it says it has a slim base
Britax Prince Vogue haven't seen it in RL but thought it might be worth considering if space is the main issue and it seems very reasonably priced as well. Bump would be able to use it once your DD has outgrown it.
