Blood test yesterday: Serum CA 125 level over 35 indicates possible cancer. Mine is 213. Shit.

DH knows and one friend but I don't want to worry anyone else until I know how bad it is; hence I've name changed for this post. I'd love to know how anyone else has coped / is coping.

CT scan Saturday and USS on Monday. GP has made 2ww gynae referral today.

That's interesting - I'll have a look. I'm only likely to wear a wig for special occasions. I do have a couple of hijabs somewhere from when I went to Saudi and was planning to try those but velvet hats sound lovely!

Joy, a few posts back a poster offered to knit you some beanies in a cool yarn.

Also, I live in Oman and I’m very happy to send you a parcel with some head-ware in it if you’d just like a wee care package from afar.

@Over40Overdating unfortunately I am also a frequent flyer. I keep contemporaneous notes of every appointment or conversation with HCPs. Comes in useful down the line when you need to recall what happened at previous appointments.

This is excellent advice.

BeaLola · 16/09/2025 21:06

So glad you are home but bloomin annoyed (&then some) about all this messing you about etc-if it wasn't so serious it would be like an episode of fawlty towers or something

Velvet headwear sounds very glam - maybe a little bling can be added (if you like a little bling)

Hope you are relaxing in bed with Mr Joy

Words · 17/09/2025 12:15

I do hope you're at home now OP.

I am in the same county but a different Trust. I don't have cancer but have endured an intense period of diagnostic testing ( no specialism left unvisited) and I can only écho your experiences of shocking miscommunication, terrible admin blunders and poor quality basic care.

I hope things improve for you in every sense. You are in my thoughts. Flowers

Ohjoyohbliss · 17/09/2025 20:03

Yes, I'm at home. District nurse should have come this afternoon to give my blood thinning injections. When it got to tea time, DH rang to ask what was going on. He was told that the district nurse has passed it to the out of hours service but they will definitely be coming. Now 8pm and still no sign.

I did a search for Muslim hat velvet but all it returned was turban-style headwear or mens' prayer caps.

Oh Joy ... When you aren't feeling right you need things to run smoothly and not to stress you and Mr Joy further. Let your MN cheerleaders at them! Courage Ma Brave

Try searching Muslim womens velvet cap - a few came up then.

Moreteaandchocolate · 17/09/2025 21:56

Oh no, not more mess ups and delays, it’s just one thing after another. I hope the blood thinning injections finally arrived 🤞🤞💐

Horses7 · 17/09/2025 21:59

I’m so sorry that some of your care in hospital and now you’re at home is extremely disappointing if not cruel and unprofessional. Hope you get better care soon.

Glad to hear you are home. I understand yours and your husbands reluctance to do these injections yourself but I really would urge you to try to do so. The needle is so small and it’s easy to do. I know that many of my patients found that awaiting the district nurse’s daily visit was really inconvenient. I’m sure you just want to relax at home at the moment but there may well come a time when you want to go out and enjoy a bit of normality and waiting in, possibly all day for the DN will be so prohibitive regarding this. I hope all goes well with your treatment.

I second this - I’m awful with needles and when I was diagnosed as neutropenic and found out I would have to inject myself… it didn’t go down well!
8 years on and I do my GCSF weekly plus another injection every 4 weeks and it’s fine (I can’t do my thigh, has to be my stomach and I watch something distracting while I do it and eat a sweet!)

Try searching Muslim womens velvet cap - a few came up then.

I had a look following this advice and would also suggest searching for Muslim women's hijab cap and then you get lots of lovely, more lightweight versions

Enigma54 · 18/09/2025 09:05

The injections, once you’ve done one, are pretty straightforward. Pinch a bit of tummy fat (I have a bit!)! Position the injection and push the plunger down. The needle will disappear into the plastic thing and you pop the whole thing into your sharps box.

Hope you are resting well at home @Ohjoyohbliss X

A few on eBay or Amazon. Try searching "velvet cancer hat"

Mischance · 18/09/2025 09:19

I second/third that the injections are easy. Pre-loaded syringe with a teeny weeny short needle that you use in a pinched bit of fat on tummy. I hope that you had a peaceful night at home.

LilacRos · 18/09/2025 09:20

I just posted some links to hats but MN have hidden it?
Anyway try Amazon and EBay. Search " womens cancer chemo Muslim hats"

DrAmeliaShepherdMD · 18/09/2025 09:24

I had blood thinning injections for six weeks after both of my c-sections, the ones that go into your abdomen in a pinched fatty area (can’t think of nicer way to word that, sorry)

Like you I hated the idea and so did DH but he got used to it quite quickly, we got a doctor to supervise the first one DH did so he could confirm his technique was correct

MyrtleLion · 18/09/2025 12:08

I'm currently having blood thinning injections and I do them myself. Once the first few are done it gets really easy.

Ohjoyohbliss · 19/09/2025 19:14

I've had my second chemo today, which went OK.

Saw my consultant this morning and he said he wanted to keep me in overnight tonight, just to be on the safe side. He said better one night inpatient stay now than go home and need admitting again as an emergency.

Then when the chemo was coming to an end, the nurse (sister) said "You can go home after this." I said "The consultant wants me to stay in tonight " but she said "No, you can go home." I'm not going home.

Oh lord ... communication failure rides again!
Hope your second treatment produces fewer side effects. Sleep well.

BeaLola · 19/09/2025 19:54

The left hand doesn't seem to know what the right hand is doing - so stressful- hope you get a very good nights sleep and go home safely tomorrow

Ohjoyohbliss · 19/09/2025 20:17

A good night's sleep is virtually impossible on this ward as they do obs every 4 hours and also have to see to at least one of my fellow inmates during the night as she is incontinent. Others beside me have also had chemo today and are now on fluids so those will be beeping at intervals too.

Hopefully I will sleep as I had to get up very early to get here for 8am.

Hugs for you @Ohjoyohbliss
Here’s hoping you get out of hospital and into your own home soon.

WickWood · 19/09/2025 21:37

Oh, bless you. I hope your night isnt too awful and you're back in your own bed tomorrow x
