I have spent all afternoon on the phone to insurance companies.

Stay sure told me that they could only ensure me for a single trip of less than eight days in Europe and even that wasn't a definite.

Then I've been on with world first Travel for an hour and they have referred it to the medically trained team who will have a look ring me in the next two weeks and go through some more questions and might or might not ensure me

I just want to go on holiday

I know it will be expensive to ensure me, but I didn't think they would flat-out say they won't insure me. I just thought I might have to sell the house and DH to pay for it.

Repatriation after death is expensive but my husband died unexpectedly abroad on holiday and had expressly asked me not to repatriate him in this situation. There was really no point for him, he wanted and got direct cremation where he died.

That sounds absolutely horrific. 💐

CoughForWeeks · 16/03/2024 12:42

My DH had insurance, yes.

CoughForWeeks · 16/03/2024 15:49

@determinedtomakethiswork

Thank you, it was hard. But the help I got with the practical arrangements from people I will never meet IRL was outstanding. Greece only has one crematorium so there was help with transportation from the island too, one last boat trip which would have pleased DH no end!

My dad has this problem. He's had cancer for years, and the regular companies charge silly money. Try All Clear Travel who specialises in this.

Yes All clear! My Dh has a brain tumour and gets holiday insurance with this company.

World first called me back today

After 2 x 1.5 hr ohone calls, declined to insure me, for 2 reasons

  1. It's not been 12 weeks since my last radiotherapy
Hmmm. I didn't have radiotherapy, all I had was one session with the gamma knife for the tiny brain mets
  1. My pain meds aren't stable
No, and they never will be. I increase oramorph / decrease zomorph as needed. Some days I add paracetamol, other days... etc. The pain med regime is designed to be flexible / responsive, according to need

Seems a bit unfair

@Tilllly hello my lovely Smile
Have you tried insure and go? Patients I've cared for have used them, I think you need a letter from onc. but from what you say that won't be a problem.
Sending love 🩷

Growlybear83 · 22/03/2024 02:13

Have you tried Insurance With? They were very reasonable when I had cancer, and I think they also provide policies for people with stage 4 cancer.

Tilllly · 22/03/2024 03:08

Thanks, I'll try them also

Insurance with was suggested earlier up thread, but I've had trouble getting hold of them

Ring and it sends you to website
Website takes you so far and then says to ring, as prognosis is terminal
Plus link to website is for company called Avanti
Who sent me a quote (£68 for year..., I wish!) before I answered any questions!

All Clear mat insure you, though at a considerable cost.

I looked into insurance for a 4 day cruise to Denmark and Norway for my Mum who has stage 3 lung cancer, and the quote was £1,200, which was double what the little cruise cost, so we didn't go.

But, everyone varies......

Tilllly · 22/03/2024 13:18

@penjil

I suppose I could sell a kidney, they've not got any cancer in...

Try Nationwide. My mother had terminal cancer (although was skin) and was able to be insured. This was many years ago but may be worth a shot. I'm sorry you're going through this and hope you get a holiday!

Tilllly · 22/03/2024 19:46

I have got a quote from all clear

10 days in Malta £3009 ....

Oof. Can you change your destination? Maybe that would improve the quote.

A friend of my dad had terminal cancer, couldn’t get health insurance and flew to Australia to see a brother he never knew he had. He had plenty of cash but no one would insure him, his brother by the time he knew about him was not physically able to travel so dad’s friend thought fuck it and off he went. He was also doing very well and physically hadn’t declined at the point he decided to go. He came back with no regrets.
Obviously I’m not suggesting this is sensible!!!

Well it's probably not as silly as it sounds Australia have a health are agreement with the UK so not stupid charges etc for treatment

I have got a quote from all clear

I had a shocking quote from them alcove a revolut after cervical cancer diagnosis. Eventhough had an op and was NED

I have a revolut card which I upgraded to premium ( costs £7.99 a month ) This includes worldwide travel insurance just now over for pre existing ( which is which a lot of insurance companies do anyway)

More useful to me as its one of the few that allow up to a 90 day trip on an annual policy.

INeedNewShoes · 31/03/2024 15:40

I really feel for you OP. It's just so bloody unfair.

How would you feel about traveling to a country who have a reciprocal arrangement for healthcare with the UK? And potentially traveling somewhere you could come back by car/ferry if for whatever reason you became unfit to fly while you were away.

Tilllly · 31/03/2024 15:44

Am open to anything really apart from going a really long way like Canada

stupid advice

do you have any idea of the costs of repatriation of a body? this would fall on the OP’s family

No its good advice. We decided that if it was a death situation we would get cremated in that country

At the hint of any potential hospitalisation you get a flight back but the ehic card will cover for emergency care
Its an individual choice and requires discussion

nether · 20/04/2024 07:21

Try

Travel insurance with medical conditions | Able2Travel

I don't know if they will cover every possible cancer-related scenario, but they're pretty good with many conditions
