Seriously? Am I uninsurable?! :(

I have spent all afternoon on the phone to insurance companies.

Stay sure told me that they could only ensure me for a single trip of less than eight days in Europe and even that wasn't a definite.

Then I've been on with world first Travel for an hour and they have referred it to the medically trained team who will have a look ring me in the next two weeks and go through some more questions and might or might not ensure me

I just want to go on holiday

I know it will be expensive to ensure me, but I didn't think they would flat-out say they won't insure me. I just thought I might have to sell the house and DH to pay for it.

Bundled bank account?

Oooh MSR - not thought of that

I have insurance through the bank account and they wouldn't cover me as I was awaiting hospital treatment for a more minor ailment, nothing cancer related. They just don't offer the full medical screening so gave me details of the specialist operators like Staysure etc

TwigTheWonderKid · 15/03/2024 09:26

@Tilllly have you tried https://insurecancer.com/

Bells3032 · 15/03/2024 09:32

try all clear - they specialise in insurance for cancer patients. my husband was with them for years and always very happy

But the OP doesn’t have years - that’s the problem. She is “terminal” and that’s different from “just” having cancer or “just” having stage 4 cancer.

on their website they say they still cover terminal cancer. they are specialists at insuring people who have/had cancer. I'm just saying my husband has used them and been happy (thankfully he's now been in remission a long time and got insured on my bank policy for less)

Cornishclio · 15/03/2024 10:57

All clear are good for those with medical issues.

CoughForWeeks · 15/03/2024 14:46

Repatriation after death is expensive but my husband died unexpectedly abroad on holiday and had expressly asked me not to repatriate him in this situation. There was really no point for him, he wanted and got direct cremation where he died.

CoughForWeeks · 15/03/2024 14:47

Which was obviously very cheap! He would have been pleased that it was cheaper in his holiday destination than in England.

Karatema · 15/03/2024 15:13

Try AllClear. They are a friendly bunch.

no point.

You need a specialist Op. Plain and simple. The risks involved with a terminal patient travelling from an insurer’s perspective is repatriation of body and the cost is absolutely enormous, so it is a very specialist policy indeed

that is very unusual

so presumably family and friends flew out to funeral? or missed it.

and you were alone in the country and had to sort everything and then fly back alone?

the admin. burden of waiting for a death cert from another. country must have been very difficult

I'm afraid you'd still have to declare your medical condition.

I assume the funeral was back in the UK, if there was one at all. The cremation has nothing to do with the funeral.

daisypond · 15/03/2024 16:05

op has said that they tried staysure and the price was exorbitant.

all what that PP would have had to deal with

getting a traveller cremated
getting all paperwork sorted to take the ashes back on the plane
getting the death cert

i could go on

Newlydecorated · 15/03/2024 16:13

Last year I needed insurance and was not able to use the usual insurance companies. I called Saga Insurance and although they weren't able to insure me they gave me details of a number of companies who insure people with serious medical conditions. I don't have the list any more unfortunately, but it might worth calling Saga to ask.

CoughForWeeks · 15/03/2024 16:41

DH didn't want a funeral and it was all surprisingly easy to arrange everything. The funeral director in Greece was very kind and arranged everything including paperwork and sending the ashes back.
The British Embassy were helpful too.

Sorry to derail! This was obviously a traumatic event for me but not impossible to navigate.

Thiswayorthatway · 15/03/2024 18:55

I didn’t find Staysure exorbitant, quote was reasonable for a family multi trip policy and has just paid a (non cancer) related claim for my DH

Tilllly · 15/03/2024 23:38

@Floofydawg
Not sure I understand... I would be declaring the cancer; insurance without that is pointless

Yes this also happened to my uncle. He devided he would be cremated if he died abriad abd ashes brought bsck. There was a "memorial" funeral with the ashes at a later date

Thank you, I will have a look at those

@FunnyFinch
I'm terminal, but ridiculous as it sounds I'm fit and well

I don't want to go outside Europe and I don't want any massively long trips. At most I want 10 days in Malta, but I'm thinking of things like four days in Barcelona.

My oncologist is more than happy for me to fly and go on holiday

Have a look on macmillan forums …..there’s some threads there about travel insurance…..I’m not sure where you up to with your treatment or if it’s ongoing…..but generally the quotes are highest when you are up to 12 months out of treatment…..then reduce when you are 1 to 3 years out of treatment …..and reduce again when you are 3 to 5 years out of treatment…after 5 years it’s generally back to pre cancer prices…..if you are actively having any treatment or not yet completed treatment …..ie surgery, chemo, radiotherapy…..or for people with secondary cancer , it’s very very hard if not impossible in some cases …..but there defo look on that site….also look on Breastcancernow forums…not that I’m suggesting you have breast cancer….because there’s some thread there…..but some of the quotes are more than the holiday…. Good luck 🤞….hope you get sorted

Fran91 · 16/03/2024 08:42

Hi @Tilllly another one suggesting Insurance With, my Dad is stage 4, terminal and on active treatment (chemo & recent radiotherapy due to reoccurrence) they quoted £400 for two weeks in the Caribbean, roughly £200 for two weeks in Europe and more recently £500 for UAE. If your oncologist provides a letter stating your fit for travel etc may even bring it down. Very thorough when they go through the quote . They even claimed on it when he needed Dr Appt for covid.

Hope you have a lovely holiday and time with loved ones, sorry you’re in this shit situation ❤️

FunnyFinch · 16/03/2024 10:56

@CoughForWeeks

did you have travel insurance?
