Essentials- what are they?

Not having ben camping for a while I'm not much up on campsite camping (with children) so was wondering what people consider are the essentials?

My kind of camping always consisted of stove, pot, tent, sleeping bag, waterproof and boots etc. Now we are going in a car an dI understand it can be almost luxurious so what do I need/want?

lool slubber

I had to scrabble around in the bushes only today, and had to wriggle out of a climbing harness and make sure I didn't dribble into my chalk bag when I needed a wee while climbing. It was a jolly big pain in the bum tbh, I doubt a she wee would have made it easier!

Usually I am quite good at wipping down the trousers, squatting and squirting, but add a harness to the equasion and things get complicted.

overmydeadbody · 27/03/2010 20:50

I know I know

I will not take the fairy light. I will not take the fairy lights. I promise.

Would it still be venturing too much into comfort if I shared 3 man tent with DS and new man? I just think it would be too uncomfortable even by my standards to try to squish into the little tent...

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2010 20:52

good grief

Oh no I think with the she wee you can just undo your flies, position flanged end and away you go. Maybe you would have to move the harness to one side.

overmydeadbody · 27/03/2010 20:53

OMG slubber just saw your Cabanon Pyramide tent, what a beuty!!!!! How big (small) is it ? where did you get it? CanI have one?

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2010 20:53

oooooh

NEW MAN

No I think 3 men (persons) in a 3 man tent is suitably cramped and uncomfortable enough to keep you in camp minimalism.

overmydeadbody · 27/03/2010 20:55

You are winning me over on the she wee slubber, maybe it is just the wine, but I can see why you want one...

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2010 20:56

isn't she a beaut.

4 man.

Off of the internet (can't remember site)

Of course you can have one. It weighs the same as a grizzly bear though so I reckon for your trips on the train it might be a tad oversized for your needs.

overmydeadbody · 27/03/2010 20:57

Actually, I tihnk I'd sooner take a washing up bowl camping than buy a she wee (I could pee in that as well couldn't I?)

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2010 20:57

x post a mundo

The TENT weighs the same as a bear, not the she wee

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2010 20:59

buy both

take washing up bowl to wash up in and she wee for ease of outdoor pissing

Washing up bowl strapped to climbing harness would be cumbersome

overmydeadbody · 27/03/2010 20:59

Damn. I guess it won't fit in the boot of an MX5 then? It is a bueat though, I'll give you that!!!!

Yes new man, what do you want to know? He's my climbing buddy, have known him for 4 yrs already, so already been on numerous camping trips in seperate tents!

We might just use two tents, one for all the gear(and DS?) and one for sleeping in

overmydeadbody · 27/03/2010 21:01

lol

A wahsing up bowl is too cumbersome for train journeys and definately wouldn't fit in the boot of the car

Surely one could make a disposable she wee out of leaves or sometihng?

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2010 21:04

I'm so pleased for you

When was the 'moment' of realisation? Were you hanging off a rock face together? Joined by a safety line (of love)?

sorry am being nosey, you don't have to tell

and we've ventured WAY off camping essentials for bronze. sorry bronze.

overmydeadbody · 27/03/2010 21:04

Ok slubber, tell me one camping luxurey I should fork out for, without compromising my minimlist principles. I have money right now to spend and would rather buy camping equipment than more clothes or other such useless frivolities...

Any gadget or peice of kit that you think I might like and use?

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2010 21:06

she wee out of leaves would instantly fall apart and give you giant incontinence wet patch

Clarissimo · 27/03/2010 21:06

We take 4 small children and have a car that is too small so here goes:

Tent

Sleeping abgs
Air mats
cobb plus a single burner, crockery etc
chair each
clothes
tent carpet (yeah yeah I know)
kettle and pan
two small fold up tables
lighting

that's it. and tin opener / corkscrew / bottle opener natch.

Clarissimo · 27/03/2010 21:07

OMDB a cobb because yu can pretend it is for rough boating and the like, and still cook a nice dinner in relative ease.

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2010 21:08

omdb I really REALLY want you to sleep on something more comfortable than the cold hard floor.

I fret about your joints.

How about a very thin and very small and very lightweight mountaineerers air mat? Then you can lie on your side.

overmydeadbody · 27/03/2010 21:10

Not sure there was a 'moment', as such, i think it was a gradual thing really, then we spent a weekend climbing and none of the others could come so it was just the two of us, we had a great weekend of climbing and I suddely realised how hot he was

then it took us another four months to work up the courage to make a move on each other

And he's younger than me!

Clarissimo · 27/03/2010 21:12

OMDB I think I am having the opposite: we are very much family campers but I drool over technical equipment and badger Dh to agree to it when the boys grow older (he usually mutters somthing about divorce as he stares at Vegas brochures )

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2010 21:13
overmydeadbody · 27/03/2010 21:13

oooh new man has just agreed with you slubber, he is just as frugal as me and has said he borrowed someone's air mat once and baught himslef one the very net day, OK I will invest in them for DS and I, I tihnk we deserve it after all these years of sleeping on the cold hard ground!

Fat airecs then?

Oooooh am excited about the luxury already!

Slubberdegullion · 27/03/2010 21:16

YAY YAY @ airmat decision.

mn vote always go with airics.

I'm a thermarest girl myself.

6 of one etc.

Maybe next year you'll get a Cobb

overmydeadbody · 27/03/2010 21:17

oooh a cobb, yes I see their attraction but somehow think the trangia (and pub meals) will do for now, maybe after I'm 40 I'll get a cobb...

lol clarissimo, does your DH not enjoy camping as much then?

Yes slubber, he is quite a find, a young fit find

MisSalLaneous · 27/03/2010 21:19

omdb, I love them, but they might be a bit big for you? Once unrolled, they are really big - just over 2m long! Perhaps you might like a normal Airic better? I'm just a bit of a whimp where sleeping is concerned, so went for the most comfortable thing in my budget.
