Is there some sort of fold down whojimmywhatsit that I can put up around my single burner stove?

Back from minimalism trip no 2 and I realise I NEED more kit .

I would love some sort of winged apparatus or mini windbreak thing to put up around the single stove to
a) stop it making alarming blowy noises in the strong gusts of winds
b) ? make it a bit more efficient (time to make early morning cup of tea = too long)
c) Raise awareness of FIRE and BOILING SUBSTANCES to the clumsiest and most unobservant child in the UK.

What are such things called?
Do they even exist?

There is a classic sepia photgraph in this month's Friendly Club magazine of a guy with a dwarf canvas windbreak (with little wood poles hammered into the ground) surrounding his stove, I want one of those, but more high tech, and of course very small and light so I can still be a minimalist .

Does your tent have a porch thing? It is allowed to use a stove there (watching it all the time, obv)

I just found a weedy little aluminium thing on ebay here but it doesn't look long enough or beefy enough to me (each bit is 4" wide, would that do?)

Ponders · 23/08/2009 17:11

(It is very small & light though! ])

LilyOfTheMountain · 23/08/2009 17:11

yes there is, somene had one called a windguard made of hinged metal at a site we went to

LilyOfTheMountain · 23/08/2009 17:12

it may have been that thing on ebay, he was ranting about how handy it was but clearly I can't know if it is the exact model lol

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2009 17:14

Nope no porch. Cooked under the tarp this morning in the delightfully refreshing snowdownian rainstorm .

That looks perfect Ponders, I'll go and measure the stove height but I'm pretty sure that is what I need. Thank you

I use the foldy windbreak thing from my camping kitchen (but don't take the camping kitchen, obv!

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 23/08/2009 17:15

get a safari chef bbq

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2009 17:16

140g is super light. So light that is hardly even counts as extra camping stuff.

bramble (hi ) my camping stove proper had detachable wing things that would just fall over.

Ah now slubber... I can help you with this... as I have the most amazing windshield that I made about 15 years ago- still going strong, and we used it this weekend infact... weighs about 20 grams (though you need 2 spare tent pegs too, which I'm sure you probably have)

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2009 20:07

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh a home made effort, how excellent, and 20g as well.

And how does one make such a thing?

EachPeachPearMum · 23/08/2009 20:16

ummm...am trying to upload a pic for you to see...

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2009 20:20

I can see the picture. Is it just cradboard with tin foil over the top or is there something more technical to it?

OP posts:
EachPeachPearMum · 23/08/2009 20:21

right- it's on my profile pictures
Depends on the type of stove you have though as to whether it would be of use to you....
if it is- I'll post instructions

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2009 20:21

sorry cardboard. cradboard sounds a bit down market and un-you EachPeach

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2009 20:22

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2009 20:23

Ponders · 23/08/2009 20:24

with a couple of tent pegs to anchor it - looks brilliant, eachpeach! (can't tell if it's wrapped in foil or plastic?)

Lilymaid · 23/08/2009 20:25

LOve the comment here - good thing it is out of stock.

Ponders · 23/08/2009 20:28

oh dear - that's the same one on ebay

better make your own then, slub!

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2009 20:36

lol at the comment.

I have not bought/made anything yet as I have yet to measure the height of my stove.

I want to make an EachPeach Stove Shelter (TM) though. DH cannot object to home made camping paraphenalia.

my parents had an earlier incarnation of that stove & my Dad made a windshield from one of those huge catering-size coffee tins (I've only ever seen Nescafe ones, but there may be others). He took the bottom off & bound the cut edge with some sort of tape (probably duct tape type stuff) to cover the edge. He kept the lid & turned it upside down with lid on when not in use & used to pack stove burner & other bits & bobs in it for travelling.

alternatively you can buy a ready made ones such as this

EachPeachPearMum · 23/08/2009 20:37

It's not cardboard how could you think such a thing?

Don't think it would work with the type that has the gas under the burner- they're too raised off the ground.
Ours is a very low burner height, so works perfectly.

EachPeachPearMum · 23/08/2009 20:41

I think I actually pinched the idea from Chris Townsend- king of lightweight backpackers...

The one betsyboop has linked to is 24cm high- and mine is 16 or 17cm high

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2009 20:44

It looks a bit cardboardy, in a NICE way obviously . Go on then, how did you make it? Can I just not embggen it to make it a bit taller for my stove?
