Is there some sort of fold down whojimmywhatsit that I can put up around my single burner stove?

Back from minimalism trip no 2 and I realise I NEED more kit .

I would love some sort of winged apparatus or mini windbreak thing to put up around the single stove to
a) stop it making alarming blowy noises in the strong gusts of winds
b) ? make it a bit more efficient (time to make early morning cup of tea = too long)
c) Raise awareness of FIRE and BOILING SUBSTANCES to the clumsiest and most unobservant child in the UK.

What are such things called?
Do they even exist?

There is a classic sepia photgraph in this month's Friendly Club magazine of a guy with a dwarf canvas windbreak (with little wood poles hammered into the ground) surrounding his stove, I want one of those, but more high tech, and of course very small and light so I can still be a minimalist .

ooh slub, I just had a moment of genius - you need a ring binder!

wrap it in foil, get some extra long pegs to anchor it, & you're away

I like the idea of the generic coffee tin thing. They are already shiny on the inside aren't they? No idea where I would get one from. We are tea drinkers here.

A RING BINDER!!!

Yes! Yes!

It's kind of big though isn't it? Not very minimalismistic. Does it way 20g? I'm getting fussy here, I want something under 150g

In the interests of research I just weighed an 89p A4 narrow ring binder from Asda (you can pay me later) & it was 220g. Near enough?

And you could anchor it with a tent peg through the rings!

You can also use just foil... see this example perhaps taking it a little too seriously....

BetsyBoop · 23/08/2009 21:01

just a thought, if you are handy with a needle & thread you could make a miniature windbreak fairly easily with some dowel & stong fabric, would hardly weigh anything Or even some extra long pegs instead of dowel, even strong & easier to secure.

Think of the different fabric patterns you could have

....off to think about if I really NEED to make myself one of these as we usually take a double burner with stand & a full size windbreak....

EachPeachPearMum · 23/08/2009 21:02

I actually used a polystyrene pizza base (from a large pizza) cut in half, and then cut one of the halves in half again, to make the 'wings'. Cover in kitchen foil, use sellotape ... et voila!
very lightweight, fits perfectly round our pans inside their box... and has sttod up to around 15 years of use, though I have had to recover it a couple of times. Has 2 holes, one either side poked through with a tent peg, just to anchor it to the ground around the burner.

EachPeachPearMum · 23/08/2009 21:06

Is this any use slubber?

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2009 21:12

rofl

goodness me The PLETHORA of choices before me. Oh I do love mn.

Thank you Ponders for weighing the binder, that is I believe the easiest of the suggested methods. I have a binder so that may be the one I go for.

EachPeach I will have to wait until I have my next large pizza and then I will do some cutting and measuring and see how I get on. I like to imagine the poystyrene would create an improved thermal effect than the ring binder. I feel some experiments with thermometers and graphs coming on.

Betsy, yours is the most aesthetic of the options. Oh if only I could get some sage green and cream stripy canvas and then I could have a matchy matchy big windbreak and little windbreak [twee].

Sod sewing on name labels. i'm spending next week making a series of stove guards.

EachPeachPearMum · 23/08/2009 21:21

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2009 21:30

Sod the name tapes, this looks much more fun.
