I'm going to do it. I'm going to be a minimalist(ish) camper this weekend. I did it before dc and I can do it again. I CAN do it again. I do not need all the stuff, do I?

We have found a great site near our favorite beach on the Lleyn and all I want to do is spend 2 days on the beach and just a light casual night of camping in between.

Here is my mental list

2 tiny small pop up tents

Self inflating mats
Sleeping bags
Pillows (I know I can do a rolled up jumper but I just don't think I'm ready to take that step yet)
Single burner stove + 1 saucepan
4 spoons
2 mugs
Tea bags & instant hot choc
Instant porridge
2 water bottles
Toothpaste and toothbrushes & a flannel
4 pairs of pants
2 headtorches

I may take the tarp if the weather is looking a bit rubbish.

Is this looking ok? I am not going to take any of the boxes with any of my gubbins in.
THIS IS VERY HARD FOR ME

Please note omdb I have not listed a washing up bowl

Ah slubber
But do you have 2p for a phonecall and a safety pin? and are you fingernails clean?

We were in the area of your campsite last week nosying around (we went to the whistling sand beach near there). We were staying on Anglesey but looking for something quiet on the Lleyn or in snowdonia for next summer. Some great sites on the penninsular

Slubberdegullion · 12/08/2009 19:29

aww thanks bramble. We will indeed have many happy minimalistic trips in them.

We were at Whistling Sands all last weekend troutpout. It's my favorite beach in the whole world ever. I've asked DH to sprinkle my ashes there if I snuff it. That's where we'll be all this w/e too, British weather permitting.

We liked Anglesey (I think we both stayed at Home Farm didn't we?), but we prefer the Lleyn. I'm on a long term mission to find the best site on the Lleyn. I will feedback if you want

Oh and I have very clean and very short nails miss.

We were on Whistling sands last monday Slubber. Yes it is an absolutely beautiful beach...reminded us of Sennen Cove at Lands end.
There were 8 of us stamping up and down making the sand whistle
Weather was apalling (it poured down)..but we still sat there in our waterproofs while the kids dug. That big hill back up to the toilets with a desperate (for a wee) 7 year old was the only downside.

yep..Lleyn feedback would be good

Slubberdegullion · 12/08/2009 20:02

ahh I am quite a fan of the hike up to the loo, partly because I feel it is going some way to burn off a tiny fraction of all the biscuits/crisps/cake/icecreams that I consume whilst on the beach and

I reckon it puts a fair number of peole off which leaves more beach space for me

Did you do the walk back along the cliff top from the loo? Very scenic. We did the dd's easter egg hunt there, all the way down to the beach.

OK I'll shut up now, I don't want to sell it too much

bump for her of the minimalism

Overmydeadbody · 13/08/2009 19:22

Ooooh a thread title with my name in it.

Hang on while I read it...

Overmydeadbody · 13/08/2009 19:24

Your list looks fine Slubber, but if you are going to the beach I would take the following too:

beach towels

swimsuits

a picnic rug

a day-rucksack

some bowls to eat the porridge?

Will yoou be eating out?

How many kids and what ages?

Overmydeadbody · 13/08/2009 19:29

Round of applause for slubber

I have to say I am impressed

and at that link, they are so missing the point of camping lol

Slubberdegullion · 13/08/2009 19:29

dds are 4 and 5.

I have a big beach bag that contains towels/swim suits/wetsuits/rug/wipes/suncream etc etc

I can't believe you said bowls. I thought you'd be dead impressed with my eating out of a pan minimalism. As it is I discovered today that I can fit 4 bowls inside my saucepan so they are coming too.

We'll be eating out on saturday night, and back home by sunday night so it really is only cups of tea & hot chocloate and breakfast that I have to cater for.

Slubberdegullion · 13/08/2009 19:31

I am SO excited. I collected the pile of stuff that we are taking in the garage today and do you know it's not really even a pile. It's a small collection of small camping things.

The windbreak corral is beyond comment isn't it? Utter madness.

Overmydeadbody · 13/08/2009 19:35

I think, having read all the posts noe, that you have everything you need!!

You will have a fab time and be liberated from all the usual paraphinalia you take with you!

I love the idea of sharing the porridge out of the saucepan, but be warned, when I do that with DS he gets quite territorial and we have little spoon wars for the tastiest pickings!

Are you taking honey/sugar etc to sweeten the porridge? And buying milk there to make it?

Last time we camped at the beach (wells) I just bought a packet of cereal from the local shop, so no washing up of sticky saucepan (although if you eat it out of the saucepan you will be able to get it pretty clean)

I always take a swiss army knife with me, do you have one?

Overmydeadbody · 13/08/2009 19:38

So glad you are escited, I am excited on your behalf!!

I said bowls before reading about the sahred saucepan plan, I am impressed with that, but if you are driving and can fit the bowls inside the pan you might as well take them!

Ditto the pillows, you're allowed them if you are travelling by car! I take them when we go camping in a car rather than public transport.

Slubberdegullion · 13/08/2009 19:43

I do not have a swiss army knife I was eyeing the up in the camping shop a couple of days ago after a sausage/bbq drama on the beach last w/e. I held back though as the 2 tents plus single burner were making the credit card smoulder.

I have a tiny small pot with sugar in for porridge sprinkling. As we will be eating breakfast on the floor (rug) and outside I thought I would soften the blow of not being on a chair and in the tent by doing something warm and hearty.

I just cannot imagine how you go on public transport. You really are the mn minimalist queen. I bow low before your very very small amount of stuff.

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 13/08/2009 19:45

The other advantage of porridge I thought was lack of milk spillages all over clothes and rug. I make it stodgy

OP posts:
Fillyjonk · 13/08/2009 20:28

lolol

Only thing I'd do is question whether you really do need to take cooking stuff, its more of a pain than its worth imo. If you can eat there, I'd do that, or else take cold stuff like bread and cereal.

we do the pillowcase + rolled up coat thing but I accept that that is probably a bit too far for some people.

Can I point out that you have head torches but no books.

I am really struggling to get this list pared down and I am minimalist camper extrodinare.

We take a bucket for washing up (it has never seen cat litter) but am impressed with saucepan idea.

Fillyjonk · 13/08/2009 20:31

oh and the lleyn

have heard only good things about ty newydd

it looks like the kind of site with toilet roll though

bramblebooks · 13/08/2009 22:44

at slubber's minimalist packing having just packed the car hoping for a few days on the south coat ... oy vay!

Although I can be smug and say that I have a range of swiss army knives, one of which lives on my key ring.

Slubberdegullion · 14/08/2009 11:50

Fillyjonk, I would do without all the cooking paraphanalia were it not for my morning cup of tea. I MUST have a cup of tea almost instantly upon getting out of bed (or tent) or there are grave consequences.

As we are early risers I cannot rely on the cafe being open at 6.15am for emergency tea run.

I figure as I have to take the burner/saucepan/ mug & milk I might as well splash out on porridge and spoons as well.

Good point about the book though.

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 14/08/2009 11:54

at bramble's knife on a key ring.

I need to have a word with you when you get back mrs, you TOTALLY let the cat out of the bag this morning (I heard you chatting to DH as he was setting off to work)

"Have fun in the pop ups" you said

I HAVE'T BLOODY TOLD HIM YET ABOUT THEM HAVE I.

You know this is my modus operandi for buying new camping kit. he will love them when he sees them but will be grumbly and dispproving if told beforehand.

Now he is probably at work wondering what the hell you meant. Maybe he thinks 'the pop ups' is a euphemism for the Lleyn, or my breasts perhaps.

Starbear · 14/08/2009 12:06

I just posted this (sorry to highjack) but can you lot help me too!
I so need your help today. Dh & Ds are going camping. Friends will be with them and I will join them on Wednesday. LAST year a friend & I cooked as if we were running a field kitchen in Afghanistan and feeding friends and family in huge pots. It was hard work and not quite the fantasy I had dreamed. I over did it.
This Year they/I have a small two burner and toaster cooker (v. small)
So MNers,(1) what should I buy from the supermarket today?
What equipment should be taken (and what should I not take)?
What meals are easy-peasy lemon squeezey.
HELP!

Overmydeadbody · 14/08/2009 15:52

StarBear it really depends on what food you and your lot usually eat and what you are happy and confident to make.

Start a new thread, asking for recipes and cooking ideas, and include in your OP how many you are cooking for and what you usually eat at home.

Most things can be made on a two burner camp stove, but there's no point me writing down how to make chicken stir-fry with cashew nuts and noodles when camping if your family hate that sort of food!

Overmydeadbody · 14/08/2009 15:59

Have fun Slubber! Did your DH think the pop ups where a referal to your breasts then or did he guess what you'd been up to?

Slubberdegullion · 14/08/2009 18:46

Car all packed.... there is SPACE.

DH still not home so I'm yet unsure if he has twigged or that he thinks bramble is our barking (but friendly) neighbour.

I've just checked the weather...ghaaaa yesterday it was all suns and a bit of cloud and today it it looking foul for the weekend

oh well, if it is shitehouse at least striking camp will take all of ...oooh maybe 5 mins.

OP posts:
troutpout · 14/08/2009 19:08

have a lovely time Slubber

Slubberdegullion · 14/08/2009 19:35

thank you
