I want some, but how many do I need?

I'm thinking 6 or maybe 8 and do the main guys?

We were in some awful winds last year and I don't want to have to go out in the rain again and piss about with tensioning.

Do you just do the main ropes or all of them?

bump - I think I need to know too!

troutpout · 05/06/2009 15:13

You only need 4 tbh
one on each corner

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 05/06/2009 15:15

Ah, thank you, is it worth getting 2 more for the canopy, or no?

bigTillyMint · 05/06/2009 15:16

So where do you get them from? I NEED some now

flame17 · 05/06/2009 15:22

Here you go

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2009 16:14

I have them for all my guys (quite a lot on the guadeloupe) plus a few extra for extra guys (attached with a klingon) to windbreak/utility tent (whatever is looking scary).

They say on ukcs that you only need them for the main guys, but tbh for the price of them vs price of peace of mind when you are lying in a freaking hurricane [hyperbole] right on the N Wales coast line, well er ....

I'd just get em for all your guys.

And they pull out really easily too, and you can't trip over them.

AND

they look snazzy and blokes come over and eye them up and you can tell them about forces and angles and you look very informed and impressive.

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2009 16:16

iirc if you are a member of ukcs then you get a discount. Can't remember how much, and Rob the bloke who sells them is very nice too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/06/2009 16:18

We use 8 on our tent. Have 4 spare ones which we lent to a couple last year in gales on the Isle of Wight. Their tent still collapsed but at least it didn't blow off the cliff!

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2009 16:22

Kitten, it was your thread last year that clinched it for me to place an order. I was SO relieved that I did though when we had to endure a particularly stressfull night on the Lleyn. I was able to sleep (a bit) because I was so confident in our tent plus the deltas keeping it attached to the ground.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/06/2009 16:25

thats good to hear!! So we didn't suffer for nothing

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2009 16:29

God it was SUCH a dramatic post. I was on tenterhooks reading it wondering if the whole tent plus your family and the entire campsite we going to end up in the Channel.

I literaly read it and then went across to ukcs and ordered the pegs. You should ask Rob for a bigger discount next time you place an order , tell him you sent customers his way.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/06/2009 16:35

The poor tent never really recovered. We still use it - patched, bent and with gaffer tape round the poles. Still need to do a bit of sewing on it. It looks well loved

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 05/06/2009 16:37

Ok off to place an order.

Men will eye me them up you say? Interesting.

Anyone know how many guys there are on a Montana 6......?

bigTillyMint · 05/06/2009 17:22

Ooh, thank you flame - off to place an order too!

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2009 17:23

Nerdy men will come over for a shifty

troutpout · 05/06/2009 18:40

I've got a montana 6

I'm thinking 8 pole guys
4 corners
2 at front
2 at back
plus 2 on porch

? Does that sound about right?

then whatever you need extra for canopies.

We just have deltas on the 4 corners and 2 on the canopy ...it seems enough.

nannyL · 05/06/2009 20:14

I have 8... and i would like 4 more

my local campoing shop had them in the sale for 50p bargain

bigTillyMint · 06/06/2009 07:07

OK, so now here's the embarassing question:

how do you put them in?

Do you face the "L" in or out to the tent, and should the top part be parallel with the ground?

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 06/06/2009 09:56

Hmm I hadn't even thought of that, hopefully someone will be along to put us straight.

OP posts:
nannyL · 06/06/2009 10:13

you face them into the tent...

so the top part goes across the groun paralell and the point is away from the tent (rather than close)

i also recommend a clam hammer to leaver themout.... without a claw hammer they can be extreamly hard to get out

bigTillyMint · 06/06/2009 15:14

I got one of those tent peg puller things - do you think that would be solid enough, or take the claw hammer as well?

I am hoping that it won't be that windy anyway!

you can not use a tent peg puller to pull them out (have tried the one time i forgot the claw hammer, never again, was a nightmare, learnt the hard way) I could NOT get a couple out but a strong willed man wresteled it out for me eventually

delta pegs are shaped like a " 7 " and are about an inch ish wide so no where for peg puller to grip.

they are much better than normal pegs and will hold your tent in strong wind and may even save your tent from destruction during a storm.

if you camp without them and its windy you will wish you had them!

Slubberdegullion · 07/06/2009 08:58

I've never had a problem getting them out (mind you the ground has always been on the soggy side during insertion and extraction ). I just grip them at the back end (the point) and pull out at the angle of the inserted bit.

Not sure if that makes any sense.

iirc there is a picture that comes with them if you buy them on line that shows you how to put them in and out.

bump if you search on ukcs there are a load of threads about deltas. Quite a lot of them kick off as not all campers are convinced of their brilliance. Lots of folk will cross peg instead in windy conditions.

It's all forces and the like that I'm sure I could understand if I applied myself. Basically the way they are designed the more pull on the peg from the guy, the firmer it pulls itself DOWN into the ground.
Lots of people (just like BadKitten) swear by them now as being the saviour of their tent.

They are larger than your average peg but (another tip from ukcs) we store them in a freebie cooler bag from sainsbury's.
