Electrical hookups in tents

Hiya,

This might be a really stupid question, but does anyone use an electrical hookup thingie in their tent, and what sort of things can you use with it?

Do you have to use appliances specially made for camping (i.e. with lower power requirements), or could I plug in a normal kettle or whatever?

We don't, but I think you can attach an extension lead and use what you want - I think our camping neighbours last year were using it for a hairdryer / straighteners

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 18/03/2009 13:54

I've never used an electrical hook-up in a tent. I have stayed on "official" camping grounds (with electricity for caravans) but the tent pitches don't usually have them. Since most of my camping has been "rough", I have Calor gas appliances.

potplant · 18/03/2009 13:58

I wouldn't stay anywhere without electric hook up.

We use it for the kettle, toaster, light and heater.

You can use normal appliances but you have to be careful not to overload it - I find that you can two of the above on but anymore and it blows a fuse.

(tis v embarassing asking the site manager to fix it for the millionth time).

PandaG · 18/03/2009 13:58

I think you can use a normal kettle etc, but there is often a restriction on the wattage you can use at the same time - I'm sure I've seen this on some camp site regulations.

we use ours for the fridge (it does run on gas too, but leccy hookup is easier), charging phones, charging batteries for torches etc. and will (for the first time this year as camping for 10 nights) take laptop for playing DVDs if weather is really foul for a long time.

PandaG · 18/03/2009 13:59

you do need to buy (or sometimes rent form the site) the appropriate hookup lead though.

troutpout · 18/03/2009 14:01

We use ours for light and coolbox. Oh and for charging phones.

mackie9117 · 18/03/2009 14:01

If electrical hook up is available to you you will need a length of cable (upto 25metres) with a special plug on one end ( camp shop will advice) and then a normal 3 pin socket at the other end. from this you may plug in an extension cable with more sockets on. you may be ok with regular appliances, check for a low wattage, kettles use up most power so try and get one about 1000w max. keep all your sockets above the ground and do take care when it rains for obvious reasons. lights are no problem and use very little power.

Lucycat · 18/03/2009 18:25

Yes make sure that you do buy a proper camping ehu as many sites won't let you use the blue ones that they sell cheaply on ebay.

We use a travel kettle and it is worth looking at low wattage appliances too.

try Towsure

helsy · 18/03/2009 22:04

We use a normal kettle, radio, coolbox with ours. Don't think any of those are particularly low wattage.

SlubberdegullionMaNaMaNa · 18/03/2009 22:07

Only the soft have EHU.

Proper campers go without, wear extra layers and make love when it gets dark

heh heh heh

SlubberdegullionMaNaMaNa · 18/03/2009 22:09

To power the electric kettle I rub my hairy legs together vigorously and use the static build up from that.

Peachy · 18/03/2009 22:12

nah slubber, roper campers varyn it LOL

dh isadamantly agaionst blue ehu, not sure why but he does a lot of outdoor lighting electrics so will have a reason no doubt

we have ehu but have never used it, but have a fridge so will on some trips this year, also for a light/ charger.

However unlike frends I draw the line waaaay before a TV LOL.

SlubberdegullionMaNaMaNa · 18/03/2009 22:15

We have a wind up radio and wind up lights (and I have a big, muscular R arm after a weeks camp).

We also use little garden solar lights inside the tent as night lights...and to create the right mood lighting for the love making.

Peachy · 18/03/2009 22:17

we have the wind up stuff but now we've started 2 week trips we decided to expand

SlubberdegullionMaNaMaNa · 18/03/2009 22:19

Peachy, you know EHU is the slippery slope to the in-tent microwave and TV with satellite and some luxurious chandelier hanging above your table (featuring the matching table wear and fruit bowl with pineapple).

Resist the EHU Woman!

SlubberdegullionMaNaMaNa · 18/03/2009 22:20

and I know you are vunerable to the gadgets as you are a carpet AND Cobb owner.

First step EHU

inevitable result........

caravan.

troutpout · 19/03/2009 07:46

lol slubber
omg you are right...we are on the slippery slope to a caravan

Nah dh draws the line before an electic kettle. He says it's not camping without a whistle and the ensuing argument about who is going out in the pissing rain to get the damm thing.

Peachy · 19/03/2009 12:57

at caravan

when we get old (er) we're having a folding camper, no tin tents here oh no!

DH wants one of those light / heater jobs Outwell make so we can camp earlier in the season with ds4, however if I suggested a TV he'd react with horror LOL! We laugh at those lines of old blokes you get on their caravan roofs at 5pm of the friday of a bank hol weekend fixing up the satellites

You know we haven't actually take the cobb out the box yet!

Peachy · 19/03/2009 12:58

'Nah dh draws the line before an electic kettle. He says it's not camping without a whistle and the ensuing argument about who is going out in the pissing rain to get the damm thing.'

Oh dear troutpout you seem confused! Unless it is breakfast and you're all around the stove, we drink beer or wione not tea or coffee when camping!

Poor poor you, getting it so very wrong

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 19/03/2009 13:03

I still have visions of seeing a woman on a particularly awful site that we stayed on stood underneath her gazebo in her leopard skin fleecy dressing gown with a fag hanging out of her mouth cooking her breakfast on a George Foreman grill while watching TV

We don't have an ehu btw!

gardeningmum05 · 19/03/2009 13:04

we took a microwave last year, but it was to heat up baby bottles and food. now they are older we wont bother. definately no t.v. or game station of any kind! and whats better than getting a cup of tea, pulling up a chair, kids playing, and watching the new arrivals try and put their tent up

troutpout · 19/03/2009 13:33

i quite fancy one of these though

Lucycat · 19/03/2009 14:10

Y'see slubber those of us who camp in scorchio France need the ehu to keep the rose chilled.

Not seen you around mch btw - then again I've not been here much either - not enough hours in the day syndrome....this is my Neighbours cuppa break!

Peachy · 19/03/2009 14:16

Oh no troutpout... because a tent site that posts 'For more than 40 years, Trigano conceives and fabricates Trailer Tents in France, which are sold in many European countries.' instead of HAS CONCEIVED AND FABRICATED is simply not acceptable at MN standard level

WAves toLuce and Slubber....must be that time of year, the gals are back in tents

troutpout · 19/03/2009 15:24

oh get thee to pendant corner you

aren't they handsome though?
