WARNING: camping sucks

it has come to my attention that more people than ever are planning camping holidays as the recession starts to bite. holidays in britain are all the rage, so i hear. i have also noticed the proliferation of camping threads the moment the sun shows its face.

i would like to point out that camping is horrible. cold, uncomfortable, full of creepy crawlies, tents fall down in the wind (if you can get them up in the first place without commencing divorce proceedings), campsites are full of noisy yobs who don't keep their dogs under control and if they aren't rowing all night they're singing or playing didgeridoos.

i would especially like to point out that the gower is quite possibly the worst place in the world to camp. all the sites are sloping and lumpy and prone to flooding and possibly monsoon damage, especially on bank holiday weekends.

save yourself finding out the hard way, just take my word for it, you really wouldn't like it.

i thank your for your attention

saggyhairyarse · 22/02/2009 21:58

PMSL

Camping was horrid last summer. The best trips we have done have been in April. I can cope with cold but wet is awful.

Quattrocento · 22/02/2009 22:02

LOL at this thread

DH once said to me, kind of wistfully, "You simply wouldn't ever go camping, would you?" And of course no I wouldn't. But you know, he would hate it every bit as much as I would.

Fennel · 22/02/2009 22:04

I love camping, all 5 of us in our family do, but we don't go if the forecast is for rain, we come home if it does rain a lot. And we try and avoid campsites with lots of people driving around or being noisy late at night.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 22/02/2009 22:09

I'm with you on this one OP - I hate it too!

I hate our lovely big tent.

I hate snuggling up inside said tent with DH and Dc's.

I hate the way the dc sleep so well after being in the frsh air all day (and night!)

I hate having a lovely view while I sip my wine in the evening

I can't think why anybody would want to go camping!

mileniwmffalcon · 22/02/2009 22:13

i particularly hate being able to step out of my enormous pokey cosy freezing tent and walking 30 seconds to the deserted crowded beach and flying kites having rows all day while the kids build sandcastles whinge about the lack of telly.

can't stand it

SOunds awful
Wont go there then

LynetteScavo · 22/02/2009 22:16

Anyone who goes canping ont the gower and doesn't expect rain and wind is just weird.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 22/02/2009 22:17

LOL at this thread.

Yes, Gower is risky. Look what's nearby.

Honest, would you risk it???

Jux · 22/02/2009 22:18

We'll be seeing you at the Gower this year then. You do realise that you are intruding on OUR site - we've been going since we got married and dh had been going since the 70s.

But you know, she's right, it's bloody awful and we only go because dh's bf has lived there for nearly 40 years. It really is horrible. Please believe me.

mileniwmffalcon · 22/02/2009 22:19

lol, i was thinking more this kind of thing (don't be fooled by the northern lights, those are clearly welsh wolves you can tell by their ears).

OP posts:
MaryMotherOfCheeses · 22/02/2009 22:21

And creepy crawlies a foot long.

Honest.

As a result of the germs from Port Talbot.

Mutants, the lot of them.

blueshoes · 22/02/2009 22:22

I thank you milen for lighting the way. Never camped, never will.

Funnily enough, DH's bf has just e-mailed to say they are removing the sand from the Gower to be cleaned. It'll be back next year.

You learn something new every day!

MissGreatBritain · 22/02/2009 23:18

We bought a huge tent last year, with a view to going for our main holiday in the summer, what with school holidays being such a rip-off. However, the site I liked in the New Forest wanted £30 a night! So, have found a lovely 3-bed gite in the Loire, with it's own private swimming pool for £500 for the week. And can't say I'm too upset ...

(will probably do a few local weekends in the marquee)

Jux · 23/02/2009 11:28

mil, I think that should be the MN password!
