Just asked DH (having just returned from our 5 rainy days) and he said:

Fan heater
Separate gazebo for cooking (or at the very least a sheltered cooking area - having tried to cook in a howling gale this morning)
Adequate lighting using electric hookup
Trailer to carry all the crap stuff
Kontiki
Hymer
Caravan...........

at which point I stopped listening!

Here you go You get decent offers to renew as well - I got a free Alan Rogers Guide to France worth £13 with mine.

You can also get it in some Tescos.

Troutpout · 19/08/2008 16:25

get thee down to wh smiths seeker

foothesnoo · 19/08/2008 16:27

After four wet days in wales, I was kicking myself for being too tight to buy waterproof trousers. No idea how we're going to get the tent dry as it's pouring down here today too.

bramblebooks · 19/08/2008 17:05

oOoooh, I feel a trip to borders coming on - I can do tent porn and coffee at the same time A copy of camping mag would really freak my dh out

I have been to see the nice man in blacks today. He has given me an enormous vat of waterproofing stuff to paint onto my leaky (new!) tent. I took the opportunity to stroke camping stuff.

slapheadsrock · 19/08/2008 17:16

foothesnoo, that is the alternative use ofr your dining table - a tent dryer! And the kids get to have a tea party underneath it at the same time!

I love the sound of rain on canvas, snuggled up under a blanket playing a good board game. Until I really do need to go off to the toilet block/find a bush!!

gazebo no good IMO as soon as the weather gets the slightest bit bad the bloody thing blows down.

for camping you need
head torches
alcohol
small fridge
alcohol
a sense of humour
alcohol
a strong bladder
alcohol
a pub within walking distance
and finally, alcohol

just come back from the isle of wight, am never doing it again, but then I said that last year too

blackrock · 21/08/2008 16:02

penknife
good camping beds and sleeping bags
credit card
hot chocolate
s'mores
more s'mores
beer
wine
portable fridge or cool box

JuniorH · 21/08/2008 16:34

Ahhh smores. We had those camping this year. Best camping food ever! (bloody messy too )

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 21/08/2008 16:40

ODITH - alcohol numbs all the rest. The kids are fine - DS1 last year (9) woke up in a puddle from the rain ( he insists on his own tent) and poked his head in our tent to scheerdully tell us he was dressed because he had been out earlier exploring in his pjs in the rain and so had ut on dry clothes. For adults - a bottle of brandy alexander mix - 4.99 in sainsburys can make the difference between laughing & crying ( nb, beer, wine does not cut it)

elsiefergie · 21/08/2008 20:23

What's a S'more?
I feel like i should know....

ZoeC · 13/09/2008 17:52

Melted marshmallow sandwiched with some chocolate inside two biscuits. Used to do it with After Eights and digestives, think you could use anything similar though.

mumshadenough · 14/09/2008 09:10

Wow, they sound really yummy. Gonna have to try that next time.
