Camping Cooking

We're off camping next week. Hopefully it won't rain too much, but given that I don't want to set fire to the tent what are the 'rules' on using camping stoves?

My tent is one you can stand up in and walk around with a bit of head room rather than being lower (and closer to a flame should one cook indoors!).

Should you only use them outside?

Ta muchly.

I only use ours outside (under a tree if raining for example)

A small kettle barbecue is also a good idea.

bramble.....if you want to see what causes the classic kick off on ukcampsite web forum, go over there and ask this question (that or delta pegs).

'Should I cook in my tent?' divides the camping community!

We have a smallish tent with SIG and two under 5 so I am absolutely not cooking in my tent! I think that most people with big tents do it though.

The main cause for concern (I believe) is a gas leak in a SIG tent( rather than fire as nylon tents are on the whole flame retardant).

Blandmum · 21/05/2008 19:23

We don't cook in the tent.

If it rains we have cold or eat out!

Tatterdemalion · 21/05/2008 20:20

Tatters

Ok, I'll have a look (erm, camping goddess one, what is SIG ?)

I am Queen of Safety (and worrying!)

I will put the awning thingy up with my superb beach windbreak

Maybe I should do what my OH's business colleagues do: get a hookup, take a freezer with m&s food and take a microwave.

PMSL!!

Go the pub if it rains, or get fish and chips

Tatterdemalion · 21/05/2008 21:18

sewn in groundsheet. The worry (I think) is that if you have a tent with a SIG and the gas to your cooker leaks, then you are basically all just sitting in a large bag with a gas leak.

tbh I would be less worried about that than one of my dds crashing into the cooker and rice/sauce flying all over my new beautiful tent (of and them of course )

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 21:19

a yes as tattered says, a uk campsite special lol

we cook under the canopy but never not ever in a tent

Lucycat · 21/05/2008 21:36

tatter are you trying to confuse me with your name? the Guadeloupe on your profile gave you away though

are you away next week?

Tatterdemalion · 21/05/2008 21:39

lol, yes I had to name change again because of complaints (not enough syllables etc).

I will be returning to slubbery form some time soon

We are heading off to the Peak district, friday morning. I am very excited and I bought a bucket WITH A LID today

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 21:41

i told dh about you buying the cabanon

he said you were very very norty tatters lol

though if i turned up tomorrow with a sun valley 8 he'd not mind i bet!

Lucycat · 21/05/2008 21:41

to do pee pee? [grin

or to chill the Pinot Grigio?

please god not both!

snowleopard · 21/05/2008 21:45

I have cooked in a (friend's) massive tent with one of those stand-up height living room type areas - with the door open, and right by the door. Now we've got one of those tents (but not tried it out yet) I intend to do the same. Wouldn't do it inside the tent with the doors closed - I'd assume apart from the dangers of leaks etc, the combustion would give off nasty fumes. And I'd only do it with plenty of people around - ie if DS was there I'd want at least one other adult in the tent in case of a problem.

Tatterdemalion · 21/05/2008 21:46

For the pee pee lucycat. I have (all for myself) a nice wine box of Cab Sav.

Peachy...dh still doesn't know that I bought the tent before he said "darling, please buy a tent" in my birthday card.

Tatterdemalion · 21/05/2008 21:47

SHIT

lol lol

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh no telling bramble

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 21:49

course for kids and safety you need a cobb anyway, which being covered would be ok outside with ou watching under a canopy

we nearly bought one just a few weeks ago, much like the sun valley- trouble cis we have our kit down pat now and cant really justify anything

Tatterdemalion · 21/05/2008 21:52

what is a cobb?

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 21:58

shock and there was me thinking you knew your stuff!

Tatterdemalion · 21/05/2008 22:01

oooohh look at that. fancy!!

lol I know a load of nerdy old shite about HH's and what tents come with carpets (I mutter the outwell tents specs in my sleep)

I know very little about the nitty gritty of get down and dirty camping with kids

Lucycat · 21/05/2008 22:03

the hardcore 'we camp in the snow' types on ukcamping swear by their Cobbs - and the fact that they are 'as shown' on the Hairy Bikers cookshow says it all really!

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 22:04

cobbs are good because they dont get hot on the outside, great for safety

lol at tent specs

SorenLorensen · 21/05/2008 22:05

My parents tell the tale of coming back from the pub one night while camping in the Lake District and cooking...they swear this is true...chips, on a primus, in their tiny 2-man tent. It was raining, apparently...

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 22:07

blimey!

a coupke died in brean a few years back from carbon monoxide poisoning from a barbie in a tent, so not worth the risk

Mercy · 21/05/2008 22:08

I thought cobb was northern for roll - looks pretty sophisticated for camping

Tatterdemalion · 21/05/2008 22:08

chips on a primus

how? (and mild boakage)
