Camping Cooking

We're off camping next week. Hopefully it won't rain too much, but given that I don't want to set fire to the tent what are the 'rules' on using camping stoves?

My tent is one you can stand up in and walk around with a bit of head room rather than being lower (and closer to a flame should one cook indoors!).

Should you only use them outside?

Ta muchly.

I don't know - I hadn't been born yet. They were a bit mad in the 60s, my parents.

I cook outside on my little cadac and if it's raining then I just put an umbrella up I have a campingaz single burner as well for boiling the kettle and heating up things.

I tend to make quick things that I've prepared at home, frozen and slung into the cool box if the weather isn't going to be great.

Some morrocan chicken heated up and all you have to do is stick some cous cous in a bowl, boil the kettle, pour it over the cous cous and leave to soak. Serve

Or chilli/curry and that pouch rice, reheated with a very small amount of water.

I also usually take the stuff to make stirfry on the first night, a pack of stir fry veg, pack of marinated tofu, pack of straight to wok noodles and a sauce - then dinner can be prepared from start to finish in under 10 minutes - so it doesn't matter what time we finish pitching the tent.

I find fish and chips (bought from a chippie, not cooked in the tent) rather good when it's raining. All I've ever 'cooked' in my tent is hot water - I boiled the kettle one morning when it was tipping it down. I positioned the cooker by one of the doors and left the flap open though.

first night we either go the chippy rpute, or i mske burgers home, freeze and take them. this trip is a special one so its special burgers lol (beef and stilton, pork apricot and apple, and lamb and mint)

wuvs Tatters. What's said in MN stays in MN

(have been wrangling the boys)

Actually, am more interested in the provenance of your lidded bucket, having got rid of my nappy soaker some time ago. I was lurking in the nappy aisle of big W, but hesitant to have to spend out on such an item again

Reeeeallly can't cope with this site having no edit facility, btw!!

Next question. I have not got a fancy SIG. I do have separate mosquito netted sleep pods . Do I have to worry about being gassed by anything other than my stinky boys, ie should I put my gas bottle anywhere significant?

I think that if you don't have a SIG in the main living area of the tent you can probably have your gas bottle sitting outside, with the tube coming under the flysheet and your cooker inside iyswim. I have a snaky suspicion that the tube that is provided in with the cooker is not very long......so that would merit another trip to Casey's Camping then

tbh I'm glad there is no edit facility as I'd never have the time to post new posts as I'd be constantly removing or adding apostrophes or correcting my hideous spelling.

Tatterdemalion · 22/05/2008 09:12

ahem, and that would be a sneaky suspicion obviously (although a snaky suspicious sounds quite racy)

bramblebooks · 22/05/2008 17:37

pmsl!

Ok. All I need now is some sunshine and a campsite not totally water-sodden!

I shall site my bottle by the awning and plan my next trip to caseys (via the coffee and cake shop - any takers? !)
