Sister is a hardcore wild camper in Scotland, I’d like to get her fun or useful things for her birthday but I have no idea what to get as I’ve never been camping….any suggestions? As I say anything fun or useful?

what about this clean-up kit @crazypiglady

PersephoneAgrees · 07/10/2024 18:37

Solar powered multi charger

SauviGone · 07/10/2024 18:37

Reusable pee cloth Grin

Sassy306 · 07/10/2024 18:42

Does she like good coffee? If so, an aeropress would be ideal

NetDesMamans1 · 07/10/2024 18:44

One of those Swedish fire logs. They're really cool!

Lovelysummerdays · 07/10/2024 18:46

I was given a kettle that boils water with a few pine cones and twigs. You can also cook over it and it’s light weight. It’s fab it was £60 though more for the matching pans so not cheap.

ObieJoyful · 07/10/2024 18:47

I’m a wild camper. I’ve asked for a flint firelighter for Christmas. Last year I got a good penknife.

She may already have both though.

A Kelly kettle?

If she also likes coffee then a wacoco minipresso is a non electric Nespresso machine.
Or camping slippers- like rubber soled sleeping bags for your feet!
Or an everlasting match https://flash-discount.com/products/metal-match-fire-starter?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAB-GyeQptMGwRht_O8hu3odSm0SuN&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzr_H9-j8iAMViphQBh0lOzT0EAQYFCABEgLl5_D_BwE

I really want an everlasting match I am forever hunting for matches.

Pyroleus · 07/10/2024 18:50

You need to know what kit she has already!

Also is she a proper wild camper (carries everything on her back and walks well away from road)? If yes she won't want anything like a fancy coffee machine as she'll just have to carry it 🤣 You need a gift that saves her weight/space, not adds to it.

If she drives her car and camps pretty close to it with deckchairs, duvets and an awning, then definitely the coffee machine.

ohtowinthelottery · 07/10/2024 18:50

We bought a friend a selection of Wayfarer camping meals from Go Outdoors and made up a hamper with them. He thinks they taste nice - I've never eaten one so couldn't possibly comment.

Unescorted · 07/10/2024 18:52

Titanium.... Tent pegs, mug / cookpot, spork.

Cuban fibre tent / tarp

Super light sleeping mat - the ones with cut out sections are great

Weight (or lack of) is key.

The coffee machine is literally the size of my hand and weighs 350g. DH took one on a 600mile walk and loved it, and he definitely travels as light as possible. Dimensions are in the link

Minipresso NS

The original portable coffee machine, the Wacaco Minipresso is a compact espresso maker for travel or camping, compatible with all Nespresso capsules. Ships from the UK with WildBounds.

Yes fellow wild/semi wild camper and hiker.

If she hikes reasonable distances like I would assume she does as a wild camper then had to be lightweight gear.
Don’t get a Kelly kettle. They weigh a lot and would take forever to make a cup of tea.

the flint lighter above looks cool

  • Merino base layers
  • Merino socks - Darn Tough are amazing and really cool designs.
  • A cap (Patagonia, Columbia, Passenger type brands)
  • Some other type of outdoor clothing? Depends on budget but Montane t-shirt/hoodie? Rab etc. all dry super quick which is what we want!
Take a look at Ultralight Outdoor Gear website. It’s really cool and loads of ideas of handy things on there!

She’s hardcore, out on her own miles away from civilisation for days.

Nalgene Bottles are really amazing and last forever. Plus you can use them as hot water bottles because they handle hot water!!
I camped last night and used mine. Lovely and toasty

SpikeyHousePlant · 07/10/2024 18:59

Another idea-
Silk sleeping bag liner.
Adds warmth for not a lot of grams.

Life venture one is good but £40. Depends what budget you have !

crazypiglady · 07/10/2024 19:26

These are brilliant thank you, on the lines of food are there any protein/cereal bar type things that are good?

OP posts:
SpikeyHousePlant · 07/10/2024 19:42

Clif bars are liked by a lot of people.

Dehydrated food: FirePot meals are by far the best!! I’m pretty sure they do some nice hot chocolate dessert. Have a look on their website or Go Outdoors if you’re near one.

I second this. I've got one for camping and it's amazing the difference it makes. Keeps you lovely and warm in the cold and it's perfect to sleep in by itself when it's boiling.

It has to be genuine silk though. Other liners are nice but the genuine silk ones are worlds better.

NetDesMamans1 · 07/10/2024 23:30

I've been binging YouTube videos by Outdoor Boys. Wild camping, cooking, hunting, making chocolate brownies inside a dug-out ice cave. The guy digs down about 10ft to hollow out his little igloo/cave, and feels something under his feet...it's THE TOP OF A PINE TREE.

crazypiglady · 08/10/2024 18:40

These responses have been so helpful thank you. Best place/brand for thermal tops? I got the Darn Tough socks
