Sister is a hardcore wild camper in Scotland, I’d like to get her fun or useful things for her birthday but I have no idea what to get as I’ve never been camping….any suggestions? As I say anything fun or useful?

Thermals - size can be an issue, some brands are built for the skinnier of us, so maybe peek at what brands she already wears?
I really like my older Patagonia capeline and merino tops, I've a friend with a Findra which she loves (and looks great), but the best by a long way that I have are Helly Hansen in plain merino or (better) thier Merino and synthetic mix. The hybrid one can be washed normally, dries quicker and just feels so snuggly.

The coffee machine is literally the size of my hand and weighs 350g. DH took one on a 600mile walk and loved it, and he definitely travels as light as possible. Dimensions are in the link

Now I want one, and I don't even camp. But I love long hikes and coffee. The idea of having a coffee on top on a mountain is bliss. What a great invention.

I want one too! Random question will it keep water hot could you fill it in the morning and then make a coffee at lunch or do you need to add hot water then make coffee straight away?

That mini espresso thing is brilliant @Howmanysleepsnow I might even buy one myself!

But an Aeropress is what I'd usually take and is just as small and light weight so is just as good an option I think.

Clif bars are liked by a lot of people.

Dehydrated food: FirePot meals are by far the best!! I’m pretty sure they do some nice hot chocolate dessert. Have a look on their website or Go Outdoors if you’re near one.

Firepot meals are fucking horrible! I had 2 last year. Good nutrition and everything, but felt horrible to eat. It was like eating some kind of musili/granola with all the fruit removed. I ploughed through thinking "this must be doing me good" because anything that tasted so worthy must be doing something, but my tongue was crying.

These responses have been so helpful thank you. Best place/brand for thermal tops? I got the Darn Tough socks

Darn Tough are brilliant socks.

Well when I mean they’re nice, they don’t compare to a ‘proper’ meal. But if you’re backpacking/hiking in remote areas with no re-supply options and carrying your own food, the weight/calories/taste ratio is really very good for an instant meal. Especially the posh pork and beans one!

If you’re at a campsite with a bar (or a car!) or you’re hiking for a weekend then obviously you can carry something ‘nicer’ These are really expedition foods.

Those charcoal instant heat packs

Mysterian · 01/11/2024 22:52

Summit To Eat meals are very nice, as are the ones from Decathlon, and Adventure Foods from Go Outdoors. Tasty, filling, light, as opposed to Firepot.

Sleeping bag, insulated mug, a solar charge will be good.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/11/2024 07:07

Unless Shea's asked for something specific - xxxx type sleeping bag, xxxx stove, it needs to be something that it's useful to have multiples of eg: good socks (I stand by Darn Tough). The thing about adults and established hobbies, is that they tend to have the kit they need.
