I'm looking for some new campsites to visit for weekends or short stays in North Wales, North West England, Lake District, etc.

We're in a motorhome - electric hookup not essential. We've been to Shell Island a fair bit, which meets all our requirements, but looking to go to some new places.

Specifically, the criteria are:

  • Next to the water - ideally beach, but lakes or rivers also good.
  • Space to give a small dog an off-lead run in the evenings.
  • Nice views
  • Walking or cycling distance to a nice pub would be the holy grail, but not essential.

We do get about a bit so if you've got a cracking recommendation anywhere else in the country I'll add it to my list.

Thank you kindly 😊

Dale Farm in the Peak District is nice. Dogs on lead on the campsite but plenty of places nearby for offlead walks, walking distance pubs! River was fairly near, a few minutes, for ddog to swim but i didn't go in (local kids were swimming)

Nantcol Waterfalls campsite near Barmouth is beautiful.

Streams running through the site, there are pitches by the waters edge.
Electric hook up if you want.
Camp fires allowed.
Pub serving food in village a short drive away, but it does get busy.

I wouldn't go during school holidays! Better off peak when it's quieter.

That's a great shout - we've been up there but never camped.

North wales.. right on Porthmadog beach

They accept tourers.

Right on Fraisthorpe beach.
It's stunning.

I can second Fraisthorpe beach. DH and I will doubtless be there on the sands with our beach tent at regular intervals this summer once it's too hot in Spain 😊.

Edited to say Porthmadog is also lovely!

It's shropshire so not the areas you have mentioned but small batch campsite ticks the other boxes.

Camp next to a lovely little stream which is great for the kids to splash about in, excellent pub 2 mins walk away. Great walks, great views.

You got there before me ! It's lovely and the sunsets are beautiful

Ocaber near Skipton is fab and there's a Chinese takeaway that will deliver to site. 2 pubs and a train to skipton or a walk.
Grizedale campsite is basic but lovely.

RandomMess · 10/06/2024 22:33

@Polkadotsanddiamonds I just walk my dog there a lot and the kids have camped there as the teen right of passage!

Lokshen · 10/06/2024 22:38

Red Shoot in the New Forest (obviously not in the North). Lovely spacious pitches, pub on site, fab walk to river and lake and the truly weird Rockford Sandpit (don't forget your sledge!)

My older teen went with his friends and they behaved themselves and were made to feel really welcome. My teen wanted to show his friends how nice it was after we'd been as a family for several years. The cafe breakfast is yummy too and our dog loves the walk along the canal. I thought we'd lost him last time we went but he was so tired he'd put himself to bed, opening the tent zip and commando crawling onto my air bed !

Ooh that one looks good. I hadn't really thought of black rock sands but I don't know why. It's a lovely area and a nice beach.

If you're looking at the north west, Anglesey has some beautiful campsites right near the beach? Blackthorn Farm is lovely

we haven't been for a few years so not sure what it's like now, but it looks good on the website though I think they've got a Facebook page as well . I loved black rock sands

I’ve been a few times to this site near Ullswater and we all love it. There’s a dog walking field. Nice cozy pub with log fire on site and a pancake and pizza oven truck. I’ve only been in the glamping pods but there are a variety of tourer pitches.

This is in Cornwall but probably the best back to basics campsite we have used. The beach is a 10-15 minute walk. The beach is totally dog friendly, in fact if you haven’t got a dog it raises eyebrows.
I think there are hook ups but there are only 15 pitches. It sits between Polperro and Fowey with some of the best eateries in Cornwall. If you can get a booking, the Sardine Factory in West Looe is well worth a visit.
You may see dolphins if you are lucky. The little cove is great for swimming.
There is a great pub, but need to drive to, the Jubilee Inn where the food is lovely. And you have to visit Inkies Smokehouse at Golitha Falls. They do amazing breakfast waffles and pancake stacks as well as other stuff.

As for the Lakes there is the top of Ullswater, Waterside House.

https://www.pitchup.com/campsites/England/North_West/Cumbria/Broughton-in-Furness/moss-side-farm-campsite/#photo-gallery
South West Lakes with some less commercialised towns and villages.
Broughton-in-Furness has a proper real ale pub in the square.
Ulverston, a lovely market town, well worth a visit, particularly to Irwin’s butchers for their meat and potato pies ( a Lakeland delicacy) and to Booths, the Waitrose of the north. Lookout for the salt marsh lamb which is raised on the salt marshes around the Duddon estuary.
Explore the Duddon valley making sure you drive right to the head of the river, stopping at Seathwaite, at the Newfield inn for a spot of lunch and to wonder at the amazing slate floor in the bar. Then on to Birks Bridge.
There are plenty of small campsites throughout this area, nothing fancy so just the basics. We were never very keen on clubhouses or lots of entertainment. I love sitting in the quiet of the evening watching the sun set, wrap up in a blanket listening to the countryside going to sleep.

Highertown Farm Campsite Cornwall

A peaceful campsite near Lansallos Cove, surrounded by pretty Cornish villages.
