I'm looking for some new campsites to visit for weekends or short stays in North Wales, North West England, Lake District, etc.

We're in a motorhome - electric hookup not essential. We've been to Shell Island a fair bit, which meets all our requirements, but looking to go to some new places.

Specifically, the criteria are:

  • Next to the water - ideally beach, but lakes or rivers also good.
  • Space to give a small dog an off-lead run in the evenings.
  • Nice views
  • Walking or cycling distance to a nice pub would be the holy grail, but not essential.

We do get about a bit so if you've got a cracking recommendation anywhere else in the country I'll add it to my list.

Thank you kindly 😊

I’ve been a few times to this site near Ullswater and we all love it. There’s a dog walking field. Nice cozy pub with log fire on site and a pancake and pizza oven truck. I’ve only been in the glamping pods but there are a variety of tourer pitches.

Years ago the guy who runs the Quiet Site used to be a MN-er I think!

This is in Cornwall but probably the best back to basics campsite we have used. The beach is a 10-15 minute walk. The beach is totally dog friendly, in fact if you haven’t got a dog it raises eyebrows.
I think there are hook ups but there are only 15 pitches. It sits between Polperro and Fowey with some of the best eateries in Cornwall. If you can get a booking, the Sardine Factory in West Looe is well worth a visit.
You may see dolphins if you are lucky. The little cove is great for swimming.
There is a great pub, but need to drive to, the Jubilee Inn where the food is lovely. And you have to visit Inkies Smokehouse at Golitha Falls. They do amazing breakfast waffles and pancake stacks as well as other stuff.

As for the Lakes there is the top of Ullswater, Waterside House.

South West Lakes with some less commercialised towns and villages.
Broughton-in-Furness has a proper real ale pub in the square.
Ulverston, a lovely market town, well worth a visit, particularly to Irwin’s butchers for their meat and potato pies ( a Lakeland delicacy) and to Booths, the Waitrose of the north. Lookout for the salt marsh lamb which is raised on the salt marshes around the Duddon estuary.
Explore the Duddon valley making sure you drive right to the head of the river, stopping at Seathwaite, at the Newfield inn for a spot of lunch and to wonder at the amazing slate floor in the bar. Then on to Birks Bridge.
There are plenty of small campsites throughout this area, nothing fancy so just the basics. We were never very keen on clubhouses or lots of entertainment. I love sitting in the quiet of the evening watching the sun set, wrap up in a blanket listening to the countryside going to sleep.

We're planning a few days in the lakes this year, some great suggestions here.

We’ve recently got back from Hendre Mynach in North Wales. Lovely campsite and about a 20 minute walk along the promenade into Barmouth with some lovely pubs and restaurants. We’ll definitely go back.

I think this place fits your requirements

We've not long got back from here and I can't recommend it enough!

dogoverman · 30/06/2024 12:00

@AmbivalentCamper could you walk to the beach from there
It looks wonderful anyway and I think I will book it

RandomMess · 30/06/2024 12:10

@AmbivalentCamper I used the outdoor cafe the other week for the first time, how posh are those toilets!

dogoverman · 30/06/2024 12:12

@RandomMess is the food nice in the cafe ? This place looks wonderful and I am keen to go

RandomMess · 30/06/2024 12:15

We just had drinks outside as were out walking with the dogs. It's called Archer's and has a 4.6 rating so must be worth a visit.

AmbivalentCamper · 30/06/2024 16:26

@dogoverman the beach is about two minutes round the corner. And is clean and lovely. Like @randommess said, the toilets and shower block is beautiful (and warm!) The whole place is spectacular.

We had a great time and will definitely go back. The ice cream is amazing! We didn't get a chance to go in the café sadly but the menu looked great and we heard from locals that they come just to eat there.

dogoverman · 30/06/2024 16:46

@AmbivalentCamper is the beach dog friendly

AmbivalentCamper · 30/06/2024 16:56

Kept on a short lead on the campsite. As far as I remember, dog friendly beach.

Sugarpaper · 30/06/2024 17:02

Llyn Gwynant in Snowdonia is great

RandomMess · 30/06/2024 17:04

Yes we go to the beach just to dog walk. It has muddy areas and you do need to be careful of the tide but that is the whole of Morecambe Bay/the entire bay, areas of quicksand/mud and very fast tides.

user1471422256 · 30/06/2024 17:07

Wasdale national trust? We loved it here - in the middle of nowhere but pub is in walking distance, stream deep enough for a short swim immediately behind the site and the beautiful Wastwater a short distance away. It’s beautiful.

Mykittensmittens · 30/06/2024 17:11

Tyddyn Isaf. On a beach with a path from the site, they have an on site bar and restaurant, a decent little shop and take orders for home made baked goods for the morning (croissants etc). It’s won lots of awards and is small and quiet but has all the facilities.
