  1. Rosemarkie Beach.
  2. Absofuckinglutely awful.
midgetastic · 21/03/2024 13:32

Scotland is rather large - it's like saying where should I camp in England

The midge problem depends on location and time of year

any particular part of Scotland?
can recommend Balloch O'Dee in Galloway in the south and Comrie Croft near Crieff - both dog friendly and nice sites. Balloch O'Dee has great showers/toilets, while Comrie has a fab cafe
but no use being f you wan somewhere in the highlands...
as for midges it depends where and when you go
we went to Camping in the Forest near Aviemore one summer and there were so many midgies we couldn't sit out at night. But if you can have a camp fire that helps keep them away

Aaron95 · 21/03/2024 13:36

Scotland is huge. It must have at least a thousandd campsites. Where do you want to go?

How bad the midgies are depends on when you go and where you go. Before May there won't be any. After May they start to appear. They breed in water so are worse near places with still water. There are usually very few by the sea but loads in damp places or bogs.

Milarrochy bay - loch Lomond / isle of Skye/ Glencoe. We travelled between the 3 across 2 weeks with 2 dogs and loved it

Midges are worse on the West Coast and Loch lomond. Go east we used to caravan in Elle or Crail they have lovely sites.

Mrsjayy · 21/03/2024 13:42

Yes midges are a summer/autumn surge.

Daffodilsarentfluffy · 21/03/2024 13:44

Can you specify an area?

campingwithdoggo · 21/03/2024 13:46

I'm planning a two week tour around Scotland so any recommendations are great !

Where do you want to visit how many stops are you planning?

User478 · 21/03/2024 13:53

You can also wild camp in Scotland.
I'd stop just north of Crail:
maps.app.goo.gl/7a2fDxmXrmmdaFha7
Wild camp on the beach (take your rubbish away with you and poo in the public toilets not in the bushes) and have a cheese toastie.

The west coast may well be lovely but midges ruin everything.

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 21/03/2024 13:58

My favourite place to camp is Ruberslaw in the Scottish Borders. There are pitches within old garden walls or you can wild camp around the estate. They will drive your gear to your site where there are composting toilets, water taps and wood for fires. Dogs are allowed. There is a village close by with a great fish and chip shop too. NO MIDGIES.

The Caravan and Camping club Scone site was lovely but very tame. Dogs are allowed. Midgies weren't that bad. Very close to Scone palace.

There is a lovely small site called north rhinns in Dumfries. It's adults only, I'm not sure about dogs. Midgies were pretty bad.

Milarrochy Bay Caravan and Camping site is right on loch lomond. If you have wetsuits you can bumble about in the stream that runs into the loch. Don't swim in the loch unless you're experienced and equipped, it's very cold and very deep. Midgies just ok.

Glenmore campsite in Aviemore. Neighbours were very loud and drunk shouting for their dog all night so that's how I know dogs are allowed. Midgies from hell.

Port Ban on the Mull of Kintyre is beautiful, allows dogs and the midgies weren't bad. There are a lot of campsite rules and it's in the middle of nowhere but we enjoyed that aspect.

Sands Caravan and camping in Gairloch is so beautiful and dogs are allowed. We will definitely go back. Can't remember if the midgies were bad.

PeatandDieselfan · 21/03/2024 14:06

Clachtoll.

Depends what way/how much the wind is blowing.

PeatandDieselfan · 21/03/2024 14:08

Can't remember if the midgies were bad

They weren't then - bet you would!

FartSock5000 · 21/03/2024 14:20

The wigwams in Crianlaroch are dog friendly and the midgies were tolerable. They have a river running through the farm too so you can both go for a swim. Views are spectacular and its on the West Highland Way for nice long walks. You can take the dog into Tyndrum or stop for a pint and a bite by the Green Welly.

Its also nice to sleep inside the wigwams which are glamping pods to get out of the cold this time of year. On site kitchen and paid showers too.

Daffodilsarentfluffy · 21/03/2024 14:24

Bonchester Bridge Camping. Ddog friendly. River on site... Shower facilities amazing.. Staff fantastic.. Near Hawick. Bit rundown but amazing walks and views. Some great shops and cafes..

stargirl1701 · 21/03/2024 14:28

Stay on the East Coast! If you head West choose a pitch with a strong on-shore breeze from the Atlantic. Do not camp in a sheltered spot or you will be miserable.

Sandyhills in Dumfries and Galloway on the solway firth is a huge family favourite 💗

campingwithdoggo · 21/03/2024 14:35

Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you ! Planning trips is my favourite thing to do ! Some of these recommendations sound absolutely amazing
@Mrsjayy I really haven't got that far yet, avoid the n500 route I guess because I have heard how busy it gets

I work up in Scotland on the odd occasions and have been longing to spend some more time up there

The dog is going to be utterly ecstatic !

OP posts:
Mrsjayy · 21/03/2024 14:38

The 500 route is terrible apparently its always rammed my favourite place in Scotland Is Mull and iona recommended a visit. I've not camped on mull but there is campsites

midgetastic · 21/03/2024 14:41

Rule is thumb is midges are worst in the west and worst June July and august

A midge net does help just don't try and drink your coffee through it

campingwithdoggo · 21/03/2024 15:06

Looking at all these recommendations is making me very excited !

I have only had the dog for two months, she is a rescue and had never been swimming before I'm planning a summer of camping for us both

OP posts:
campingwithdoggo · 21/03/2024 20:34

@stargirl1701 these both look amazing thank you

Now just fingers crossed for some rain free time
