Campsite car crash: Nine hurt in Newgale, Pembrokeshire https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-66490869

I was just saying to my husband that never like staying on campsites were cars can drive on to the pitch for this reason. But then when you look at it in more detail the campsite is right next to a main road which is even scarier!

Wishing the campers a speedy recovery

Crash scene

Campsite car crash: Nine hurt in Newgale, Pembrokeshire

The car came off the road into the campsite at night and rolled into a tent and a group of people.

Yes. It's literally an open field opposite the beach alongside an A road in the middle of no where.

Looks so peaceful and I bet a lovely place to relax.

So sad when these things happen. I hope those seriously injured recover soon.

And once again our amazing emergency services have done a great job preserving life.

So frightening. Wishing those poor people a speedy recovery

elliesmummy19 · 13/08/2023 18:20

Stayed there a few times. It is literally a busy road next to a campsite, campsite on one side of the road and the beach on the other side.

Hopefully those who are seriously injured with make a speedy recovery.

Thelonelygiraffe · 13/08/2023 18:25

We were there on holiday a few years ago a few hundred yards from the campsite.

It should be possible to drive along that road without leaving it and running into the campsite. I wonder if the driver was speeding?

I wish the campers a speedy recovery. What a nightmare for them.

gogomoto · 13/08/2023 18:28

Said in the news report the car braked hard and rolled. I know that road, it's not busy but people do drive too fast

FutureThroughLensOfThePast · 13/08/2023 18:34

You'd think there'd be a requirement for some kind of barrier between the site and the road. Of course it's common to have cars drive onto the site for access but they're going no more than 5mph, very different from road speeds.

Absolutely to the emergency services 👏

That would totally put me off wanting to camp there!

I wonder if the campsite should be liable?

But even 5mph campsite driving scare me!

If there's no legal healthy and safety guidance to the effect that a barrier is needed, I don't see how they could be held liable.

5mph campsite driving never bothers me - I've never experienced anyone driving with anything but care on a site itself.

Polis · 13/08/2023 19:00

Cars on the campsite don’t bother me. I have never witnessed anybody driving inappropriately, but I would never pitch that close to the road.

I also can’t see how the campsite could be liable unless they haven’t complied with any safety regulations. The driver on the other hand…

Polis · 13/08/2023 19:04

And once again our amazing emergency services have done a great job preserving life.

Apparently, there were two surgeons and two firefighters staying on the site who were first on the scene.p and were able to help.

It worries me only at night time… When I’m lying in bed and see someone’s headlights freaks me out! If I’m lying down and it’s dark I reckon 5mph can still hurt!

I haven’t been to a campsite were you can drive in to the pitch for years.

We have a trailer tent, so they are a necessity.

PuttingDownRoots · 14/08/2023 06:33

I don't think I've ever seen a regular campsite where you don't drive onto the pitch (hiking campsites and scout campsites excepted).

I get pissed off at healthy people who insist on driving to the toilets though....

Whaa!… I don’t think I’ve ever stayed
on a campsite big enough to warrant driving to the toilets

I'm 2 mins down the road from here - whilst the camp site is by the road, there is a pavement, a small bank and a ditch before the camp field itself.

There are 2 sharp almost 90 degree bends either end of the road by the campsite, and the speed limit between these 2 bends is 30mph.

The only reason the car flew into the field was because the idiot young driver, who apparently only passed his test 10 days ago, came flying down the hill, in an overloaded car (7 people in a ford fiesta!) at 80+mph, missed the bend, and catapaulted into the field.

I hope they throw the book at the driver and he never drives again.

Gnomegnomegnome · 14/08/2023 16:41

@ScoobyDoesnt the driver was injured, wasn’t he?

I had never worried about things like this but would now. Imagine waking up to that!

Yes, apparently so. I'm not feeling much sympathy for him I'm afraid; he injured innocent people one of whom seriously, because of his actions. And it was by pure good fortune he didn't kill the young toddler who was protected by his bed.

This is a beautiful part of the world - I'm looking out on the beach and sea now, and there's even a weird big yellow round thing in the sky which hasn't been seen for a while!

ThreeLeggedCat · 14/08/2023 22:00

We stayed there years ago and heard someone come screeching down the road and skid. No accident though. When we heard about this one we both thought it would be that campsite - and it was!

How do you know whether or not they are healthy? I look completely "normal" and "healthy"... I have a fluctuating, often debilitating, neuromuscular junction disorder.

(I mean, I tend not to camp for that reason, but it frustrates me endlessly the looks I get when I use disabled toilets etc)

To be fair... I didn't. But they were also drinking.

Well that's entirely different. But it's quite important to be clear that you can't know from looking at someone how disabled they are.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 14/08/2023 22:45

It was a young local driver, just passed his test and he was driving on the road and 'somehow' managed to roll it off the road into the camp site.

It's not a particularly busy road, and it was fairly late, 9 ish I think. I've stayed there a few times as my DP live in the next village. During the summer the road can get busy ish, but it's a small, coastal road. Classed as an A road, but much more like a B road.

Oakbeam · 15/08/2023 01:24

I wonder if he came down the hill at 60 and then stood on the brakes when he saw the 30 sign, losing control of the car as a result.
