Best camping meals you have had

I have camped for years, so I have my go to menus, but I'd like to branch out a bit for this next trip.
We will be hiking in to our site, but will have a fair amount of space as we are bringing wagons along with our packs.
There is a food cache where we will be so the food can stay bear safe, but there will be no way to keep it cool.
We will have a two burner propane stove with us, and hope to have a fire as well, depending on how dry it has been.

So far, we have enjoyed basic soups, stews, beans etc, but would like to try some new things as well.
Any suggestions? And any dehydrated foods/meals to avoid?

I watched a youtube cooking programme where a chef tried dehydrated meals. He was shocked that they tasted so good. I thought I'd give a couple a go myself last week on a camp. I tried Summit To Eat fajita and pasta bolognese meals. (£7.50, but I got a deal for about £6 each.) Easy to prepare and tasted really nice. I wasn't expecting them to be as filling as they were, and felt full afterwards.

Pasta with a ready made sauce sachet is pretty easy. The trick is not to try to cook the pasta in a big pot of water which uses way to much fuel/water. Put the sauce in the pot along with the dry pasta and keep adding water as it cooks and absorbs it.

According to my husband it's not a camping trip unless there is a beef stew with onions, new potatoes , and carrots on the go!!

CountessBathorysBeautySecrets · 27/05/2023 23:49

fried sliced potatoes and fried smoked sausage with peppercorn sauce.

Are you in the US? Guessing based on bear reference

I had the most amazing dehydrated humous when camping in the US

DaftyLass · 27/05/2023 23:51

These all sound like great ideas, we will be camping on the northern tip of Vancouver Island British Columbia, we are super excited

Stew is vital, for sure, and I love hummus, so if I can find it dehydrated, it's on the list for sure.

I take falafel mix www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/alfez-falafel-mix/515812-72901-72902 You just need to soak it in water for 10 minutes and then fry it. Serve it with garlic and coriander couscous https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/waitrose-garlic-coriander-couscous/029234-14261-14262

I am really excited now to try some of these, we are going to test them before we go

If you can get hold of them Firepot meals are amazing. Not the cheapest but v filling, full of energy, and great for when all your fresh stuff has finished - and they have beef stew!

That sounds amazing. I hope you enjoy it. I went snorkeling with seals in nanaimo on VC island, would recommend if you have time. But that's an aside

If weight is an issue but you have access to water and time to cook. Pancakes can be fun if you can get powdered milk and eggs. Flat bread is simple to make too.

Will you be buying food when you get there? Are there restrictions about what food you can travel with?

Your trip sounds exciting. I recently have had kids so unlikely to be able to do this again soon

Oh my, that sounds amazing! I watch the latest series of Race Across the World in the BBC and they were in Vancouver Island. I'd never realised just how big it was Wink

Tinned cassoulet

gogohmm · 29/05/2023 20:56

Dal and chapattis is my go to, so easy

DaftyLass · 30/05/2023 02:33

I'm lucky to live here in the isy, but I'm on the south end, so only get up that way once or twice a year. I do go to Naniamo frequently, I'll have to check out the snorkeling!

My favourite is portobello mushrooms torn up and fried with eggs cracked in between and bacon on the side. You can do a similar sort of thing with tins of mixed beans and jalapeños - a kind of huevos rancheros. Assuming you can take eggs in the wagon without them breaking!?

DaftyLass · 31/05/2023 02:16

That sounds amazing , and yes we will be bringing a dozen eggs, so very do able

Since you're on FN land you should make bannock!

DaftyLass · 31/05/2023 02:32

Absolutely! And I can have it with black berries if the birds and the creatures don't get them all first!

We don't have Tesco here, but we do have similar mixes.
I am going to try two or three out this weekend, and I'll let you all know how they turn out

Just blatantly place marking as I'm doing the food shopping fir our camping trip tomorrow.

geminiflanagan · 30/06/2023 19:48

I saw a tiktok earlier where they cooked chorizo in a saucepan, then added a punnet of cherry tomatoes and a whole camembert. Drizzled with honey, some chilli flakes and then lid on the saucepan for a bit. Everything melted and melded together and then just dipped crusty bread in like a fondue. Looked amazing!

EggInANest · 02/07/2023 15:26

Stew etc if you are taking a pot that can go on a campfire. Otherwise you will use loads of gas!

I have taken a Dutch Pot, which goes in the fire. Slow cooked spiced brisket was a hit. You can also bake in these with embers underneath and a few on top.

Or take a pie iron in which you can do burgers, steaks, toasted sandwiches, apple pie….

Lots of Dutch pot and pie iron recipes on the ‘net.
