Apologies as I've posted this in there holidays section, but then realised that if you take your tent, this may be the place to ask where to stay overnight en route south.
We're heading to Austria and need a cheap and cheerful stopover.
If you have any recommendations fire the best chain, here's the original post. Best budget hotels in France and Belgium for a stopover www.mumsnet.com/Talk/holidays/4756220-best-budget-hotels-in-france-and-belgium-for-a-stopover
Thanks

How low in budget do you want to go? We have used etap hotels - very cheap and cheerful.

Or, even cheaper are the F1 hotels.

If you've young kids, might be worth checking out Novotel or Ibis Styles, both of which usually do family rooms; Ibis Styles includes a free breakfast for everyone. Etap hotels are now called Ibis Budget. Otherwise, Campanile, B&B Hotel and Premiere Classe are all budget hotel chains in France.

Thanks everyone. Two old teens so effectively 4 adults - trying to decide if we could cope for one night all in the same room Grin

Novotel cap the age for children at 16, so family room may not work. Some of the B & B hotel chain have rooms with a double bed in main room and a mezzanine with 2 single beds which might be a suitable option, although some years since we've stayed in one.

We have done lots of stopovers in France on our way to Spain. We usually go for an Ibis but they are all very similar. Very basic but clean. We don't have the breakfast as it's not great. We tend to go on booking and choose the cheapest one in the area we need as they are all so similar. You would need two rooms in these places though as it's a large king/doublenbed then a single so it's 3 per room. We book two rooms and ask for them to be next day to one another. We tend to go for one which is just off the motorway and there are usually a few similar ones on the same site. We have booked an air bnb before which was much nicer but not worth it for the stopover as we get there late and are out again early
