Best budget hotels in France and Belgium for a stopover

We're doing our first road trip in a while and need somewhere in either Belgium or France for a night on the way. It's all a bit alien as we're used to taking our caravan and stopping at a campsite. I've googled but there's so many! What's similar to travelodge ie cheap and cheerful, near the motorway and ideally with breakfast? Thanks

‘Hotel B&B’ is a chain hotel a bit like travel lodge as is Ibis budget. This is France I don’t about Belgium. Avoid the Formula one chain, these are very cheap but have shared bathrooms and tend to have lots of builders/tradesmen who are working away from home staying there.

Pick where you want to have a stopover and then find the cheapest one that you like the look of on booking.com.

France is the epicentre of the cheap and convenient budget hotels universe. Ibis and Kyriad Direct are a couple that spring to mind. Often they seem to be situated in the same developments as hypermarkets and drive in boulangeries, which is mighty handy! :)

Look for Première Classe hotels. They are nicer than Formule 1.

The Campanile chain is generally clean and comfortable - stayed at one in France recently and the breakfast was remarkably good.

The chains mentioned above are all decent budget hotels, if you decide where you want to stop over, see if there are any nearby on booking.com which is very comprehensive.
If you're driving I'd go for one with its own parking for security, we've had our car broken into in France and had things stolen when it was parked on the street outside a hotel.
We've stayed at Campanile and Ibis hotels and they are fine to good. Slightly more expensive are Novotel (but also a bit more luxurious) often to be found on the outskirts of town, some not far from motorway exits, with good secure parking.

Yea we definitely want private parking. Thank you for those suggestions.

Ibis are reliable, cheaper than Novotel

When travelling through France with our DCs we used to stay in Ibis, they were akin to our Premier Inns.
An advantage was that we could book adjoining rooms, so we could lock their corridor door and the link door was open to our room.

We6ve used Premiere Classe, Ibis Budget and B&B on trips the last few years for stopovers - the newer ones of these are great, the older ones not so much. A handful have 4 and 5 bed family rooms which make family stopovers a doddle as no arguing about rooms, sorting 2 bags for a stopover night etc.

We go for Logis. We pick on the map where we want to stop and see what is the closest. Have found some wonderful restaurants in these hotels. Rooms basic but clean

FoodieToo · 07/03/2023 22:29

We always like Novotel !

In Franche Campanile and Kyriad are the ones we have used the most frequently. Belgium have only done one stopover - Martins Red on the outskirts of Brussels, and a very nice B & B in Bruges. Both with parking.

However there are some great independent hotels too - just takes a little longer to find what you are looking for.

Which towns/cities are you going to?

NCTDN · 09/03/2023 16:56

We're driving to Austria so probably going via Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany.

We've used B&B Hotels across France before. Very happy with them - easy to find and easy to book online.
