Taking Food to France?

Angelsman · 25/06/2022 11:33

Hoping to go to France next week. In the past we have always taken some food with us - milk for the journey and lots of walnuts and brazil nuts. Does anyone know whether this is still permitted since we have truly now left the EU? Any knowledge would be really appreciated.

It's not, but we drove to Holland recently and no one even batted an eyelid DS was eating a sandwich as we drove through customs at the Eurotunnel, we took little this time other than bits for the journey we accepted we might lose. Next time I'll do as before and take a cool box

RandomQuest · 25/06/2022 11:37

You can’t take meat or dairy. So the milk is out unless unless you mean infant formula as that is exempt. The nuts would be fine though.

RandomQuest · 25/06/2022 11:38

But yeah as PP says, the chances of being caught milk smuggling aren’t very high.

OrangeSamphire · 25/06/2022 11:42

Think the nuts would be ok but most fresh food items are not allowed. Including fruit and veg.

when we travelled two weeks ago every vehicle was being searched with whole crews turning caravans upside down etc.

we were waived through as we were in the disability assistance line so no one checked us. Which was a bloody good thing as we had prepped and puréed special meals for our disabled son to last the sailing and then the entire drive down to the south of France. Without these we wouldn’t have been able to feed him. A total nightmare that we didn’t anticipate and we won’t travel to Europe again as a result. Just can’t risk it.

No meat, no dairy.
Rules are pretty clear on the website.

Thanks very much for your replies. Much appreciated.

So it says “no dairy products such as cheese or yoghurt”. What about chocolate, or, idk, custard creams? V. Important question.

They are a no. Bourbons are ok as they are dairy free.

You'd hope they'd make an exception for something like that, but I just checked and although taking food across for medical reasons is allowed it has to be in commercially branded packaging. FFS.

OP, we got the ferry from Portsmouth and some cars were being searched but ours wasn't so would have been luck of the draw. We only had baby food which would have been ok in any case.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 25/06/2022 18:26

Are you going on the Chunnel? There’s a massive Carrefour right next to the exit. Very little you can’t buy there.
leClerc in Outreau, just before you get onto the motorway if you are going south west is possibly the best supermarket in the world. Oh how I miss stopping there and buying our dinner to have in the chambres d’hôtes dining room…..

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 25/06/2022 18:30

What's so great about walnuts and Brazil nuts bought in the U.K. compared with nuts bought in France?
France has some of the best food in the world IMO, why on earth would you v take food with you?

Siepie · 25/06/2022 18:33

No meat or dairy. You can take fruit and veg for personal consumption.

Food tends to be cheaper in France, especially at the minute, so I wouldn't stock up on food to take with you.

Well. Nuts and fruit is our breakfast. We're away for 5 weeks. Nuts can be pretty pricey in France.

No one looked in our fridge last week ( only had some milk for tea!)

The supermarkets in france are excellent, just take what you need for the journey.

motogirl · 28/06/2022 21:10

Have you checked the prices? I've always found French supermarkets fairly good for pricing, obviously not specifically English products but more generally. Cashews are about €13 a kg it seems for instance, my French isn't the best so no idea what Brazil nut or walnut is!

We drove/tunnel in February and being in a campervan fully expected to be searched- I had the kids scoffing their sandwiches before we went through but no one was searched as far as I could see. We flew in May and I food was very expensive, even compared to current prices here so I would take what you’re allowed.

morningstarz · 03/07/2022 20:51

🥴😂 as if they were checking for meat and dairy, seriously!! More like bombs, weapons, drugs or people being smuggled.

whiteroseredrose · 03/07/2022 21:01

Gosh. Blooming Brexit. As a family of vegetarians, now vegans we used to take a fresh meal for day 1 and a frozen meal for day 2. Obviously couldn't do that now.

We're planning on going to Belgium in August and taking oat milk and vegan cheese. No meat or dairy so hopefully ok.

LittleEsme · 05/07/2022 10:54

Same - bloody hell!
We usually take a few cartons of frozen chilli and frozen milk in a cool box (along with other foods) to sort our first 2 dinners and breakfasts when we camp.
