Am I crazy to consider going camping alone?

I'm in desperate need of a break and looking at heading off camping for a couple of nights soon along with the dog.
I was all up for it until mentioned it to DP who was horrified at the idea, primarily for safety reasons. Is he right?
I actually work at a camping/outdoors company so my colleagues/friends opinions on the matter (very positive) might be biased.

Am I mad to think I'll have a lovely time?
I'll be booked into an official site with proper facilities.

For context DP isn't able to join as we've got 4 weddings this summer as he's used pretty much all leave up on the weddings and stag do's. He'll be away for a few stags over the year but I haven't got anything aside from day events planned.
I've settled on camping as it's cheap (I am also skint due to above mentioned weddings) & I can take the dog.

Oh I'd love to but I think DH would be very offended. You could always get a tent alarm if he's really worried?

LilacPoppy · 02/06/2022 19:33

it would be cold and lonely but not dangerous in an official site.

Lovemusic33 · 02/06/2022 19:34

I know lots of women that do it. I camped last night but with dd2, we camped in a lay-by in our Campervan, I would love to do it completely alone.

Tents aren't known for their soundproofing, you scream everyone knows.

I love solo travel, I have never been bored.

Our of interest why?

I've been solo wild camping before and it was great. Going to a camp ground solo, I wouldn't even think twice about safety. Enjoy!

I would like to do the same. I wish there was a group that did this.

Over on Scotsnet I'm looking for a campsite for unaccompanied children. There are a few to choose from. I'm pissed off for you that your DH has put doubt in your mind. He's being ridiculous. Go and have a lovely time. The only question is what tent you can put up by yourself. But people will give you a hand on a site if necessary.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/06/2022 22:23

It’s fine. Why wouldn’t it be?

OK, pm me what area you'd be interested in camping in.

I've done it on a proper site and its fab, I don't have/want a partner and sometimes I just need to get away. I've also camped at festivals alone.
I always take a rape alarm just as a precaution but have never had any problems.
I wouldnt feel safe wild camping unless I had several very large and angry looking dogs.

lurchermummy · 03/06/2022 08:06

@OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen why would he be offended or why get a tent alarm? I think my DH would just be a bit sad that I'd prefer to go sit in a tent on n my y own than spend my free time with him. A weekend away with friends etc is different somehow.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 03/06/2022 08:09

When I was younger I used to do this loads with my dog and it was great. Definitely go ahead OP!

OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen · 03/06/2022 14:32

lurchermummy the dh bit, see I don't see the difference between alone and with friends personally. Neither is a reflection on me wanting or not wanting to spend time with my dh, instead it is something I need for my soul. Sometimes friends fill that, sometimes solitude does.
I don't see it as sad spending time with oneself, in fact I think it is freeing.

lurchermummy · 03/06/2022 20:56

@OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen no I totally agree with you I think time alone is very soothing for the soul (and I'm an extrovert). I just think DH would see it as a bit self indulgent and odd - I see this as my problem rather than a reflection on your choices!

I hope you’re going OP. He’s more
likely to come a cropper on a stag do than you are on an official campsite. Tent, campfire, book, wine- sounds perfect to me!
