Am I crazy to consider going camping alone?

I'm in desperate need of a break and looking at heading off camping for a couple of nights soon along with the dog.
I was all up for it until mentioned it to DP who was horrified at the idea, primarily for safety reasons. Is he right?
I actually work at a camping/outdoors company so my colleagues/friends opinions on the matter (very positive) might be biased.

Am I mad to think I'll have a lovely time?
I'll be booked into an official site with proper facilities.

For context DP isn't able to join as we've got 4 weddings this summer as he's used pretty much all leave up on the weddings and stag do's. He'll be away for a few stags over the year but I haven't got anything aside from day events planned.
I've settled on camping as it's cheap (I am also skint due to above mentioned weddings) & I can take the dog.

Definitely go for it. I'll wish for the good weather for you.

AlwaysLatte · 18/05/2022 13:59

I did it once, with my dog, although I'll be honest, I was quite bored as it's quite an interactive thing. I only stayed one rather than 3 nights.

runnerbeany · 18/05/2022 14:00

Totally fine. I've camped alone both on a campsite and also in the wild. No troubles.

SweatyChamoisPad · 18/05/2022 14:01

I do it in the Lakes - it's fab. Just make sure you take a tent that can be put up solo.

notacooldad · 18/05/2022 14:03

As someone that goes wild camping I honestly cant think of a reason why you need to ask opinions!😀
Just go and relax.
Have a fab time.

PicniKTime · 18/05/2022 14:04

Or go somewhere fairly local you partner can stay the nights with you if you’re worried?

I’ve been camping plenty of times, not completely solo but just with children aged 3/6

I disagree. Camping is anything you want it to be!
Solitary, sociable, you choose!

BistoBear · 18/05/2022 14:09

I have walked and camped on my own many times, absolutely loved it when I was in a campsite. I have only wild camped on my own once and I wouldn't that again, I felt quite vulnerable TBH. It was in a remote cove and my imagination ran away with me 😂

CoffeeAndWinePlease · 18/05/2022 14:11

Thank you for all your replies.

I think I was worried that I was being a bit blasé about his safety concerns, likely due to being surrounded by people that go alone all the time.

@AlwaysLatte I totally get what you mean about boredom but I really think I could do with some peace and quiet. I spend a fair amount of time alone at home anyway (DP is much more extroverted than I) but just really fancy a change of scenery.

Will hopefully be booking a site this evening!

What on earth does he think is going to happen to you? It's fine. Go and have a lovely time.

Cakequeen1988 · 18/05/2022 14:19

I’m 40, I’ve done this several times!

I was on an organised site as you mentioned and it was lovely! Small chit chat with the owners and fellow campers if I wanted one. Went on nice walks, cooked, read my book, enjoyed the scenery in peace, it was idyllic!

go for it and I hope you enjoy the break x

fuzzyduck1 · 18/05/2022 17:18

Go for it.

most people on campsites are either families or couples normally very friendly and up for a bit of chit chat but mainly just interested in their own little worlds.

if your worried about safety take a personal alarm with you.

Spudlet · 18/05/2022 17:21

I’ve done it plenty of times. It’s fine. Have fun!

Northernsoullover · 18/05/2022 17:26

I've been tempted by car camping. You flatten your car seats and boot down. Not so much for security although there is obviously an added element of safety. It just looks so cosy. If you use tiktok follow car camping pages.

SheSaysShush · 20/05/2022 19:04

I went last year by myself (but left the dogs with my husband) for three blissful nights. Read 3 books and thoroughly enjoyed the silence.

I've never felt unsafe camping. I can't wait to do it again.

Diversion · 20/05/2022 21:49

I love camping alone, spent the time reading, relaxing and had a BBQ for one. I had no concerns about being a lone female at all.

blobby10 · 23/05/2022 10:07

I've got a 9 day holiday in the folding camper next month with two youngest 'children' (aged 22 and 24!!) but then, once I've got the hang of the camper, will go away on my own for a weekend or three possibly taking my bike and exploring places like the New Forest. The worst bit for me is walking into a pub or restaurant and eating on my own but I've done it before on work trips and learned that if I take a book then people don't feel obliged to make conversation with the poor sad old woman with no friends Grin.

TrifleFunny · 30/05/2022 14:58

I would like to do the same. I wish there was a group that did this.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 30/05/2022 15:06

What safety issues is he concerned about if you’re planning to go to an actual site rather than wild camping? I genuinely don’t understand 🤷🏼‍♀️

ivykaty44 · 30/05/2022 15:12

I’ve done it several times solo and used to camp with my dds when they were D.C. never thought it was unsafe

AiryFairy1 · 30/05/2022 15:19

It sounds bliss - I’d read 10 books, walk, eat my favourite junk food and have a lovely time!

Ladyinbeds · 31/05/2022 23:24

You know it's fine, we know it's fine, and you won't be alone anyway because you'll have your guard dog! From everything you've said, it sounds like solo-camping is your calling...you have to go.

StageRage · 01/06/2022 19:53

I go camping in my own all the time. No worries at all.

I like really quiet basic sites with loads of space.

Sometimes I make a big thing of cooking over my campfire, trying out new recipes, sometimes I heat up M&S tins. Or sit on the beach at sunset with fish and chips before returning to the site.

I do walks that I am interested in, visit NT or historical sites, go shopping in local towns, etc. Or visit people that I know in the area. I tend to go to places where I can meet up with someone in the day, or at the pub.

3 nights max so far.

Really enjoy it. Never had any cause for concern.

Purpleavocado · 01/06/2022 20:01

I read a book called "just a little run around the world" which is by a woman who literally did just that on her own, pulling her equipment on a little cart. So one night should be fine 😀

SheSaysShush · 02/06/2022 19:10

Did OP go?

Just came back to the post and need to plan my solo trip ASAP.
