Can an electric car pull a trailer?

If so which ones? And how heavy can the trailer be?

DH & I use our electric bikes (solar panels) for shorter journeys and those unencumbered

But we do need something so I can work - last autumn I tried in the car packing and unpacking all the rails and my clothes but it was such hard work

Now I either have to get a van which may be less suitable for the occasional car trip or a car and a trailer which I can sleep in occasionally

Quite what is the most eco I don't know

Have you considered an electric van? Nissan e-nv200 is pretty cool.

PhoneLock · 07/06/2020 21:04

Is it worth buying a small electric car and just hiring a van as and when you need it?

KatyMac · 07/06/2020 21:05

Electric van?

Hmm that one is a bit low for rails of clothes, but I'll have a look

I wanted a sort of twee horsebox affair with bunting Hmm

Hiring a van? Maybe - I was hoping to spend this summer trailing round fairs, markets and festivals (thank goodness I didn't buy it this spring!)

So I'd keep the clothes/kit in the trailer in the storage and go away every weekend

What I need is a share - where someone works Mon-Fri and I take it over Fri evening and give it back Sunday morning

I think most manufacturers do some sort of alternative fuel vans now. Not as up to scratch on LCV as they're a bit boring. It's much more of a new thing tho so you would probably pay quite a bit but there is a grant you get that is substantial. It's more complicated than the car grant which is a flat 3k if under 50k but is more as it's 20% minus some stuff.

Tesla model X
Mitsubushi outlander phev ( but can only pull about 1500 kg)

PhoneLock · 07/06/2020 21:17

In addition to the Teslas, the Audi e-tron and Mercedes EQC can both tow up to 1,800kg. Contrary to what I said earlier, it looks like the Jaguar I-Pace is rated for towing, although it's much less capable in this respect with a maximum figure of 750kg.

Shamelessly plagiarised from here...

You guys are amazing - thank you so much

So I had thought a horsebox because they are a bit rustic/twee but I am guessing a horsebox is big and tough and heavy because they have horses in

What could I have that would be more rustic/twee than a straightforward box trailer but lighter than a horse box

You get all sorts of weird questions on MN don't you

My colleague really likes his electric Nissan van which he uses for work.

Have you considered a roof box?

Yeah @SamanthaStripyPants I agree ref. Hybrids. It's so easy to go over the small range!

KatyMac · 07/06/2020 21:30

This is a modern horse box and an older one

The older one is much smaller

But either could be a sort of mobile shop?

Tesla model x, Audi e-tron, and Mercedes eqc are the best for towing but are most definitely not budget cars. Basically you can only tow is the manufacturer has approved tune car for towing. We have an MG ZS EV and sadly can't tow. The new MG 5 coming out later this year will be able to tow.

SamanthaStripyPants · 07/06/2020 21:40

The modern one will be lovely as a little shop at festivals. If they are the same as caravans then the modern ones will weigh a lot less so more likely be towable by an electric vehicle. iPace are lovely and last I heard, there were some great delas on new as someone over ordered and they are trying to get rid.

SamanthaStripyPants · 07/06/2020 21:41

Someone really big, not just bob down the road. So 300 or so waiting for a home.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 07/06/2020 21:43

@TimeWastingButFun that is exactly out situation, down to the MG. I love the MG but the lack of outside temperature gauge annoys me!Grin

KatyMac · 07/06/2020 21:47

I use vintage & pre-loved household fabrics to make occasion wear and wedding dresses and I run mending tables

So old/twee would be better but modern and light could be good if it's practical and eco

I thought I'd have a gazebo outside and roll the rails down the ramp into it - with a changing room/mirror inside?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 07/06/2020 21:51

New is out of the question; I don't buy pretty much anything new if I can help it :)

But one-day someone will want to sponsor me to have something really eco, one-day

OP posts:
SamanthaStripyPants · 07/06/2020 22:11

That sounds amazing and creative!

The modern ones could be made to look twee a lot better than the old I think. The old look a bit like transporting the horse is their only purpose. Although I do see loads of them at fayres so is definitely the done thing and I assume a lot cheaper.

Hope you can find the right way of doing it 😀

KatyMac · 07/06/2020 22:17

The weight is worrying

I wish I had an expert to ask.....Oh wait, MINUTE will have one - I just need to ask the right question....

Seriously tho' you have all been amazing, thank you xx

OP posts:
KatyMac · 08/06/2020 04:35

MINUTE = MN

Sorry, tired

Those equitrek trailers are both very expensive, heavy to tow and shit build quality OP, a little, or larger box trailer ( ie non horse) will be light and much cheaper to buy

KatyMac · 08/06/2020 08:39

After all my research last night - I think I agree

The attraction for the horsebox is the shape - but it's not worth the weight

I found a chevel liberte but even that is nearly 800kgs!

I need someone to think this through with me

A caravan with pretty much everything removed might work

I need to think what I want:
A trailer I can sell from
Something I can sleep in
Just transport

Not sure

Maybe a Dylan to sleep in a trailer to transport and just a gazebo to sell from?

Does your driving licence have class B+E on it?

KatyMac · 08/06/2020 09:06

Yes - I think I have everything as I passed in 91!

OP posts:
SamanthaStripyPants · 08/06/2020 09:14

I was going to say the same thing about towing. I think it was 2003 that it changed. However, it might be better to take a lesson or two just in case. Just because you legally can, doesn't mean you're safe.

I looked into towing and the instructor said you can provisionally tow as long as your total weight is something like 1750kg. Might be something else so don't take that as gospel but there is a weight limit without the test.

Go to vehicle licence checking from the dvla. It tells you what you can and can't do.

Wjat about one of those caravans that are cut in half?
