I want a really massive tent that will last forever!

We've got 3 kids so I want one that will have 3 bedrooms (one for DH and I, one for DSs and one for DD when the time comes). I would like it to have spacious living area and ideally another area for storing stuff (I went in a tent that had a tunnell type opening and that was good. I want it to be well made and able to withstand fairly harsh weather.

Any ideas?? Are Outwells any good? They seem quite expensive but there were a fair few at the campsite we visited on the weekend.

Do check the Vango, we were thinking of one then when we checked ( the Aspen) the bedroom layout was competely wrong- a 3 bed which would be for dh and I, then just 2 1 man rooms 9we measured, not enough room for 2 camp beds)- so couldn't do our family of (then) 5

we do like the Breckenridge though

Our gelert was fantastic, but there are occasional dodgy ones frm every manufacturer of course

Still say coleman galileo. Its great (much better in RL than pictures though)

Biglips · 10/08/2007 08:47

all to the ground..if that what you mean??

it is FAB and also so roomy too...its one of the brand new ones out this year...you cant get it less than £500 mark from anywhere and its excellent quality too.

here is a better piccy

harleyd · 10/08/2007 09:11

lol. i meant did it attach to the side of the tent (as in pic further down in your first link)

thomcat · 10/08/2007 10:05

Is there such a thing as a tent that has 4 bedroom, i main one that is a bout 3 or 4 berth and then 3 smaller ones that are 2 berth each, plus another room we can use to stash clothing and stuff?

All the tents I'm looking at only have 3 bedrooms. They are all lovely but I want more rooms! I specially like yours biglips, am loving the wardrobe!

ernest · 10/08/2007 10:44

outwell hartford xxl has 4 www.yeomansoutdoors.co.uk/products.asp?recnumber=775

Peachy · 10/08/2007 11:29

The Khyam Ontario has 4 (one is a double with a divider)

can't say the main one is 3-4 berth though

tehre are some outsize tents out there, mainly of the geodesic design- eg the Gelert tahoma is a good tent

Biglips · 10/08/2007 13:27

harley - i will have to wait till Dp comes in as i cannot remember as i last went camping in May. so we are going tmrw. hooray!!

We found this tent was the most stable, sturdy tent than any other and paid £499. Same price on Ebay

I'm torn between:

www.outdoormegastore.co.uk/acatalog/Outwell_Georgia_XL_Dome_Tent.html

Or the Vango Diablo 900.

Dilemmas, dilemmas!

hiya harley - there is no side canopy at all as its all-in-one tent.

paulaplumpbottom · 10/08/2007 21:22

What about a yurt?

harleyd · 10/08/2007 21:26

hey biglips, its the pic of the outwell universal canopy if you scroll down on your link!

Biglips · 10/08/2007 21:27

BUT you can unzip one or both zips at front of tent and use as a canopy/awning for those warm summery nights or sun shade during hot sunny days, would give about an extra two metres at front of tent.

Biglips · 10/08/2007 21:28

which one? the first link or second?

harleyd · 10/08/2007 21:30

crossed wires maybe? im looking at the universal side canopy. im loving the tent

harleyd · 10/08/2007 21:30

first

Biglips · 10/08/2007 21:31

We've spent the last week in our Vango Diablo (six berth) and would agree with others that it's a great tent, very spacious, stands up well to bad weather but is also easy to air through in hot weather. We use the side entrance to the porch so that we can use it for cooking and storage. The only 'faults' I can find are ones I would imagine you would get with any dome tent, namely the lack of a view from inside and having nowhere to hang things. Sometimes this makes me gaze longingly at the old-fashioned frame tents but not for long!

Peachy · 11/08/2007 18:27

Just been to the tent show now

Went into the tent Biglips hs, Dh is now in love! We'll need to adapt it with additional inners to fot 4 kids but its OK (its known that I ahve a 'thing' against Outwell green- not the brand you understand, the shade )-i susepct we'll end up with that. We did like the Breckenridge but the door is too squiddly small for my likng, shame.

The most stable tents will always fall into 2 categories- rigid tents and groundhugger geodesics. there are a few geodesics out there- personalr ecommendation is the gelert Tahoma we hd, which is so similar to the Diable its laughable. outwell doa few as well in that style. Fibreglass tunnels will always be afffected mroe by weather BUT nake up for that to a large degree in terms of weight and size- its purely which you prefer tbh

crunchie · 12/08/2007 15:28

OK I think I have been seduced by a new tent!!

I love my old Vango Colorado 1200, as it is massive, but it has no SIG, it has no wayof getting a breeze through the tent, no windows and you do have to crouch in the bedrooms!! We have had it 4 years.

We just went and saw Aztec Falcon8 at our local shop. It is HUGE, loads of light, doors both ends, SIG in most of it. WIndows for extra light. comes with a canopy which almost boubles living space too!!

Peachy · 12/08/2007 17:39

They ahev the Aztec near us, its a good tent

I reckon we'll be geting the easycamp mykonos 8 next. And who knows, it may even last 2 seasons!

Roobie · 12/08/2007 17:42

I've had my eye on the Vango Vail 700 for some time now and actually got the opportunity to see it in the flash last week. It's huuuuggge, 3 bedrooms, SIG, , vast living space and canopy thereby creating even more shelter. Loved the large see through windows and the airy feeling of space.

Peachy · 12/08/2007 17:45

Actually vail is top three of ours after a looka rou8nd, and they're wuite cheap at the moment on some websites too (found it for £300)
