AIBU to want noise to stop at 10pm

When camping AIBU to want people to stop making noise at 10pm? I don't mean chatting around outside your tent, I mean music, laughing loudly, shouting, generally acting the fool. My husband, I can tell thinks I am but it drives me mad! Tents are made of fabric and when I'm in bed, it's like I'm at their party- I wish they'd shut up!

are there any rules set out by the campsite? I think 10pm is pretty early really if the weather is nice, can you move further away from the noise.

FrangipaniBlue · 06/08/2019 21:17

YANBU but that's why we specifically choose sites with strict 10pm rules and who won't take large groups - we've been visiting the same one every August for 10 years now!

FabLaura · 06/08/2019 21:23

That's a great idea to choose only ones with 10pm noise times. I've only ever seen 11/11.30pm

Happyhammer - out of interest what time do you think is ok if the weather's nice?

Blimey, you go to bed at 10pm on holiday? Our children weren’t even in bed by 10pm whilst camping this weekend. The sun had only just gone down and we were enjoying the camp fire.

FabLaura · 06/08/2019 21:32

Hell yeah, if I could go to bed at half 9, I would 🤣

This is why I posted this topic as I'm really curious as to what other people do. What are you doing?

OP posts:
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 06/08/2019 21:47

What are we doing around the camp fire?

Having a drink, chatting with our friends, toasting marshmallows, kids have hot chocolate, put magic fire on the fire, listen to (quiet) music, light painting photos, light to frisbee in the empty field behind us, eat snacks and generally have a laugh. Bed around midnight.

FabLaura · 06/08/2019 21:50

Bed around midnight! Crumbs!
Magic fire? I'm googling it now! Wow, we're gonna get some!

FabLaura · 06/08/2019 21:51

What's light painting photos?
And does your frisbee come with a light? 😳

OP posts:
FabLaura · 06/08/2019 21:53

That magic fire lasts up to 40 minutes 😳 Amazing! No wonder you stay up till midnight

I don't think you are BU at all. Our first holiday with our eldest, there was caravans and a campsite. Some joyful souls had drums, which continued well past midnight. With a baby just over 12 months I needed my sleep, although I think it applies to anyone. If you don't sleep well you feel crap the next day.

Luckily we had a weeks holiday arriving on the Saturday, this group arrived Thursday and departed Sunday. The site manager had quite a few complaints.

I think it's common decency.

We now have a campervan we've done up, we've been to lots of events and lots of trips away, where people are always considerate of others. It's common courtesy really.

Hope it's a bit quieter now for you.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 06/08/2019 21:58

Yes the frisbee lights up so you can play in the dark. You might have to google light painting but basically it’s playing with torches and taking photos with a long exposure so you make pictures with your beams.

We also star gaze! Amazingly clear nights this week.

I just think by going to bed so early your missing a special part of camping. Where we go there isn’t a building in sight so very little light pollution. It’s beautiful and one of our favourite tunes of day at camping. Cool, calm and relaxing. I hope you get to experience it more.

FabLaura · 06/08/2019 21:58

See drums is ridiculous! And this is the kinda thing we too have experienced and I just pray they start packing up and bugger off. But magic fire is fun and wouldn't annoy anyone else

I hope I’ve given you some new things to try!

userxx · 06/08/2019 22:01

I think 10pm is quite early to be honest, people are enjoying themselves.

HappyHammy · 06/08/2019 22:05

I would say 11pm is the norm for people to be asked not to play music, put fires out etc. Not sure if fires are a good idea if the ground is very dry, are you holidaying in the UK? The campsite we go to recommend a local beach where they have a bbq site, they don't allow them on the campsite. We just sit around chatting, having a glass of wine, sometimes we go to bed earlier but most nights about 11.30/midnight. Stargazing is great to relax. I don't expect people to be especially quiet on a campsite unless it's a very small private one.

FrangipaniBlue · 06/08/2019 22:22

What @GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat is generally what the people where we stay do, although maybe til about 11 rather than midnight but that's generally not all that noisy I would t say, more background noise?

Kids running around screaming and music playing definitely not post 10pm Grin

biscuitbadger · 07/08/2019 08:28

I'm with you OP. We love camping but look for basic sites with strict curfews if we can.

Ideally we'd all get to bed around 9.30-10. We don't want to spoil anyone elses fun, but being kept up until midnight spoils our fun as the kids don't cope next day.

Usually after one bad night we're all so knackered we sleep through the next! And quiet chatting around campfires is a lovely sound to fall asleep to, as long as it's not right by your tent. It's loud music/drunk people shouting/screaming kids that is really a problem for us.

There must be a thread about recommended sites with strict curfews somewhere...?

lazylinguist · 07/08/2019 08:34

We are generally early-to-bed people, but 11pm seems reasonable on holiday tbh.

snitzelvoncrumb · 07/08/2019 08:40

It's 9 pm where I camp, as lots of families camping. You don't have to be silent, but no music and loud voices after then.

ItWentInMyEye · 07/08/2019 08:43

If you've picked a site that you know noise is allowed till 11/11.30 then I don't think you can complain really.

ThatCurlyGirl · 07/08/2019 09:06

I know everyone has different preferences and yours are as valid as everyone else's but only in as much as you can go to bed at 10pm if you want to but other people don't have to as long as they are sticking to the rules of where you're staying.

If you want to go to bed on a campsite at 10pm and almost all of them have an 11pm quiet time rule, then why on earth should everyone else work around your schedule? Presumably they picked that campsite in full knowledge of the rules and they are sticking to them.

Sorry OP but I think if you can't cope with the rules the only reasonable thing for you to do is choose campsites that have timings in line with yours or not stay at campsites!

Sunshine1239 · 07/08/2019 19:59

I agree you. Any moan about noise if you choose a 11pm site

Personally I’m up til 2/3am when camping (kids usually midnight) - it’s how I manage to sleep on those god awful air beds! The evenings are the best part of a camping holiday

NettleTea · 07/08/2019 20:00

we have a 9.30 keep the noise down rule and absolutely NO amplified music anywhere on site policy at our campsite. 12 acre field. 12 pitches only. and a seperate REALLY quiet area for adults only.

That said we had disturbances last saturday when there was a 21st birthday party across the valley that went on until 6am and people were disturbed - this is a one off thankfully, although one of the guests walked the 2 miles cross country to gatecrash!

Doryhunky · 08/08/2019 08:31

Nettletea where is your campsite? Sounds great
