Its great isn't it

We had to put off our 'virgin' camping night a few weeks ago with the heavy rain. Going this Saturday, 1 night to trial the tent etc...

I am actually really scared

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 11/07/2007 19:50

i'm,a bit scared too. have been camping before in a borrowed tent and we had to pack up at 7am as it was lashing down and blowing a gale and ds2 was screaming with fear.

now we have spent all this money we actually have to start camping regularly!

we are planning on getting a cheap ferry crossing to france in the sumer and trying out camping abroad!

we just have to survive next week

two words

delta pegs

they keep a tent down even in the most remarkable of gales

Lucycat · 11/07/2007 20:22

ooh hello again!

well done you mmj! congrats on the new member of the family!

The only reason that we have it as our weekend tent is that I like to be able to stand up our bedroom for longer trips - our 'big' tent is on my profile.

The Vango is peasy to put up and should be fine for longer trips if the weather is good - get yeerslf a windbreak to give you some shelter for the cooker and keep it outside.

what is the forgotten thing - I'm intrigued!!

btw I've never managed to go to Go Outdoors and not come out with something.

You do know that Yeomans camp show starts this weekend on the field opposite Brookside Garden Centre in Poynton? guess where we'll be Saturday morning

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 11/07/2007 20:23

it was gas cylinders for the little cooker!

and Peachy at Holmsley - I thought these new Forest sites could do no wrong!

Hope you've posted a review on Uk camping

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 12/07/2007 08:54

ok-0have got a lot of stuff off the list now.

will go back this week and buy a windbreak-would you say that was an essential? can you not just use the flappy bits at the front of the tent?

will have to get sleeping bags laundered.

blow up beds from loft.

have got a couple of dodgy old pans stashed away in a cupboard-will take them.

babywipes seem like an essential to me-will take lots.
wellies! must find my wellies in shed.

OP posts:
Lucycat · 12/07/2007 12:56

Where are you heading too?

Buy a beach type windbreak when you get there if at ll possible - don't bother with these poncey branded ones - they fall over in the slightest breeze!

and oh yes to wellies! or crocs

iheartdusty · 12/07/2007 13:29

may I shove my oar in?
This is our basic weekender list for 2 adults 2 kids this weekend (ie not hot weather) going festival camping, so away from tent most of day and no hot water expected on site;

Absolute minimum:
Tent. Pegs. poles.
Sleeping - 4 sleeping bags, 4 thermarests (or similar), 4 fleece blankets.
Picnic rugs (2 or 3 cheap ones with waterproof backing).
Sitting - some kind of folding chairs for adults. Kids can usually sit on a rug, but harder if ground is wet.
Cooking - single burner stove & fuel, 1 saucepan with lid, 1 kettle. Sharp knife, chopping board, tin opener, all-purpose cooking things (ie we have an old plastic spoon and a wooden spatula) corkscrew, spare corkscrew. Knife, fork, spoon, plate, bowl, mug, beaker - 1 for each person. I small washing up bowl, sponge, w/up liquid. Rubbish sacks. torch.
Clothes.
1 towel - use baby wipes for freshening up.
Food - go very simple, ie beans, pasta & sauce, bread, flapjacks, peanut butter. eat fruit rather than preparing veg.

Nice extras - Some kind of table unless you don't mind sitting on the floor to cook. If you will have your car right next to the tent perhaps you can cook out of the back of the car. Pillows, blow-up air beds. Coffee pot, frying pan, colander. Cool box (with frozen juice or milk). tea towel. wee bucket with lid. Collapsible crates/ baskets for putting everything in.

We find that we don't use lanterns - our kids are quite young so will be asleep before it is really dark, and we don't need them to cook outside.

Top tip for wet weather - wear flipflops on the site rather than boots, it is easy to dry your feet.

Here's to everyone camping this weekend!!

Lucycat · 12/07/2007 13:31

collapsible crates are a common theme

iheartdusty · 12/07/2007 13:58

you are right Lucycat. I remember watching the seasoned campers on our first trip and noticing how everything - EVERYTHING - folded down somehow. DH was impressed above all with the folding washing up crates and made a special trip to get one on our return.

magnolia1 · 12/07/2007 14:32

iheartdusty, thats a great list. Will print it out and show dh so he can go buy anything we havent got. Have 3 more kids than you but its only extra bedding.

What do you put on top of a self inflating mat if not using a sleeping bag?

Peachy · 12/07/2007 14:59

theres little tables for kids that fold down flat in woolies today £5.50- got one for my boys. Its big enough and just the right size for the three of them toeat from, its in a sort of bug design and is really quite nice.

They also have kids folding chairs cheap too, i think theyre selling off thegsrden stuff due to the rain.

Trying to think what else we take- erm ice packs, two for the cooler and two for the ice service if they have one to freeze (many sites do). If ythey dont and you will be keeping meat, fish etc buy a big bag of cie when you buy the meat that will at least keep it in this weather until evening.

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 13/07/2007 22:24

have got a folding table/chairs thing.
it's a festival not a regular site so....

am going to cook spag bol etc and take it in cool box so can just heat through.

FillydoraTonks · 17/07/2007 19:48

right am adding my list

there are 4 of us. We take more clothes for a longer trip but thats all

tent + pegs
double airbed
single airbed
4 x 3 season sleeping bags

wind up torch
wind up radio (luxury

clothes for each day for us
clothes x 2 for each day for kids

toiletries
wet wipes
bin liner
dustpan and brush

matches
cutlery, plates, bowls and mugs

some food, but esp oil, marmite, salad dressing and tea bags (we tend to shop after arrival, our car is very small)

some books etc

football
kite
bucket and spade PER CHILD if there is a chance of a beach
crayons, pens, pencils, paper.

think thats it.

chewthefat · 17/07/2007 20:17

Hi, am new to mumsnet. Am taking my DS camping this weekend for first time. He is 7 months. Any tips? We are going to Lake District and I think that the campsite will be pretty basic. We are also going to be using our BC tent - 3.5 man - so not much space!

FillydoraTonks · 18/07/2007 06:28

hey ctf, welcome to mn

I think you will have a great time. You don't need much kit with little ones

Esp if your dc is properly mobile (ie crawling enough that someone has to be following them around) I'd consider not cooking but eating picnic food and having meals out-a stove can be quite stressful at this age, just becuase they tend to grab for things, so the stove can be a hazard for a while after its used. OR find somewhere to stick it where your dc can't get to it.

Aside from that, nothing really. Its a good age to acclimatise them to camping really. I'd just go and see what you all make of it and if anything DOES niggle, troubleshoot then.

chewthefat · 18/07/2007 17:15

Thanks for the reply, can't believe that the weather is so crap for camping. We picked July thinking that at least it would be dry! I think we will definitely give it a go. At worst, we have to pack up and come home.
