French campsite - advice please!!

I’m driving myself mad searching and trawling for a perfect campsite and I don’t think it exists!

We’ve been to the same campsite in Biscarrosse for the last couple of years which was great but we'd like to go elsewhere, plus there were some downsides to the campsite.

We stay in mobile homes or chalets so aren’t proper campers.. we have a 4 year old daughter.

I’m looking for a campsite which:

  • has a couple of nice pools
  • is quiet on an evening with no / minimal entertainment
  • spacious pitches so the accommodation isn’t all squeezed together
  • has bike hire and possibly nice cycle paths etc.

Am I searching for the impossible?!! Thank you!

Have friends who loved this site.

Have a look using this label

Might this be the type of place you’re after? europe.huttopia.com/en/site/sarlat/#home

I spend every year looking for the perfect campsite... it's hard to tick every box. I would decide on area first and then go searching.

Try this website:

Thank you everyone. I’ll have a look at your suggestions - much appreciated. X

We find the Les Castells group have very good camp sites whether you're taking your own caravan/tent or renting one of their caravans. Loads of sites all across France and all extremely well kept.

This place might be suitable:

Escale St Gilles in Benodet. Next to sea and short walk to town too.

Constantsarechanging · 24/01/2019 16:23

Could you link to the one you went to previously? We tried eurocamp last year but would rather avoid that for future trips..

millimat · 24/01/2019 22:42

What region of France?

Sajocon · 26/01/2019 23:07

Thank you everyone - I knew I’d come to the right place! Just going through people's suggestions.

Not too bothered about the area but would rather not go to northern France on account of the weather.

The main things I want to find are spacious pitches (for chalets / mobile homes), quiet on an evening but with a good pool, playground etc.

Thank you again. X

La phare on the Ile de re. Ticks all your boxes.

millimat · 27/01/2019 12:11

I think I should be an official rep for them, but les valades ticks all those boxes. www.lesvalades.com/en/
It's quiet but looks for children to do. Very calm in the evenings.

millimat · 27/01/2019 12:12

Actually not sure about bike hire but there will be somewhere close by with them.

Purplemond · 27/01/2019 13:12

Domaine De Masserau

Sajocon · 27/01/2019 23:29

Really appreciate the responses. Wish I was more decisive!! I’ve been looking at Les Valades actually, it’s a serious contender...

Domaine de la Breche, in the Loire - nice spacious plots, and a really nice camp overall. We went when our DS were about 6 & 8 and they loved it.

We went with eurocamp, but they have their own mobile homes/chalets as well - it's a Les Castels site, which a PP mentioned as well.

millimat · 28/01/2019 07:13

Do it! We went to les valades on the basis of mumsnet. It's different that other sites we've been to - much quieter and laid back - but we had a fabulous time. They're were at least 2 other mnetters there at the same time. DS made friends with a few boys and they were all different nationalites- their universal game was Uno!
There is a lot of walking to get from the top to the pool and lake but it was good for our fitness and I could justify the croissants more Grin
There's so much to do near the site that we never fitted it all in.

anniehm · 28/01/2019 07:18

Look on Pierre Vacance or just use google in the area you want to visit - often the best sites are only in French I find! Best site I found was in rural Provence, amazing place and we just book ferries separately.

Theboldandthebeautiful1 · 28/01/2019 07:21

OP can you link to the campsite in Biscarrosse?

Gobbolino7825 · 28/01/2019 19:56

Domaine de Soleil Plage in the Dordogne - beautiful usually hot summer weather. Very smart accommodation.

I would also like to know the name of the Biscarrosse campsite please OP!

The one we’ve been to previously is Les Ecureuils in Biscarrosse- booked through Carisma. We loved the location as it’s right next to a beautiful lake beach which is perfect for little ones (warm, shallow water, no big waves) and was never really crowded. We’ve had two great holidays there but the negatives were how closely packed the mobile homes are and also the noise on an evening - not necessarily from that campsite but there are a cluster of campsites so you feel like you can hear it from all sides on a night!

I’ve been so busy since I first posted that I haven’t thoroughly researched all of the above suggestions but will definitely get on to it!

My only reservation about Les Valades is the uphill / downhill hike to the pool (with a child) and also the draw of the lake beach we had before is hard to resist... have looked at other campsites in Biscarrosse but think they’re all much of a muchness with noise etc.

Technically France though not as easy to get to! We absolutely loved the Yelloh village site on Corsica. Their beach chalets were amazing, huge pitches directly on the beach, lovely pools, not heaving. Best campsite I’ve ever been to.
